If its a Pit Bull, none of this works We were out walking our 3 Shelties and a guy with a Pit Bull was riding his bike, running his dog His dog saw us and he pulled his owner off the bike and was dragging him to get to us to kill our dogs He dragged that poor guy probably 30 feet on the asphalt before he regained control We were petrified and neither us nor our dogs reacted I watched a video on how to kill a violent dog with a knife and carry one on my bike now Those dogs should be illegal and in some states they are The Trump animation isn't funny Just ask E Jean Carroll

I was mauled by a pitbull when I was 5 years old I had hundreds of stitches from head to knee My Ear was bitten off and had to have plastic surgery to b put back on I was scared turned around to run and tripped on my shoe lace so it started from my legs up The last thing I remember was falling and than I woke up in the hospital I was on the news and everything It didn't make me fear dogs tho even in my interview with the news people I told them I still loved dogs Since than all I have been around have been pitbulls my best friend is a pitbull his name is tayo VerybGood advice just wanted to share my story

Just a quick response to the first part"Stop!' & "Go home" usually work well But, if the owner of the charging dog(s) is nearby, my suggestion is put your dog behind you, face the intruder(s) but Don't start shouting commands at the intruders but allow the owner of those dogs to call them If you are making noise, the intruders may not even hear their owner calling

i once was the target of a dog attack commanded by his master frozen in fear the only thing i could think was to give the dog my side i had heard previously that running away and standing square facing a dog could encourage a dog to attack remarkably the charging dog ignore his masters commands to attack since my posture was "non threatening"

Two things that have worked for me were 1 yelling at a terrier that was charging while growling 2 threatening a pack of feral dogs that were following me in an alley while growling because I had apparently accidentally stumbled on their den site (I saw puppies nearby), I basically pulled out a knife when the pack leader was right about to attack, which caused the pack to slowly back off and walk away It helped that I was genuinely angry at them, not scared

i had a large German Shepherd run me and my small Cocker Spaniel down once at the last second i booted it in bottom jaw witch made it bite quite badly though its tongue I have also seen a Rottweiler run down 2 Staffordshire Bull Terriers on their leash being walked by a laide 5 minutes latter the Rottweiler was dead

I was just attacked by a large dog on a Thai sidewalk and the only thing that saved me from a trip to the hospital was to take a karate defensive stance and I maintained constant eye contact as he charged me from 10’ when I suddenly kicked him using a karate stance which enables me to kick the dog in the nose ❤

The last time I jumped on a car (as a teenager) the dogs jumped on the car too I’m thankful the owner came out right on time Nowadays, doing utility work, I come across dogs all the time I stand my ground and I’m always ready to fight I have a powerful taser if they get too close Never had to shock a dog though (or a dog owner lol) They hate the loud noise it makes

I fully agree with her initial responses But when a vicious dog doesn’t relent, I absolutely disagree with submissive responses - be a tree, laydown and cover your neck/head, etc I’ve dealt with charging pit bulls and other large breeds, and have stopped their attacks by hitting them on their snout If available use an object - hat, stick, other - or an open hand stricking downward or an angle to avoid their teeth Giving sharp verbal commands - stop, heal, down - are also important You hope the initial responses halts their charge But when they don’t, submitting to a vicious/rabid dog(s) can be deadly

I feel you missed one type of encounter: the one that is not an attack, but a defense, for example like from a lifestock guardian brIf you do the things you advise in the first case, you'll actually make things worse and put yourself in danger, because initially the dog will come barking as loud as it can while being in an inquisitive mindset Now that you have approached with a large gesture and loud noise, you have become an actual threat that needs to be dealt with brThe tree advise is the best for initial reaction, only a LGD will not go away until iyou/i are gone So the best way to continue after the dog has come to a stand still, is to slowly retreat, no loud noises, no eye contact brActually, if you are there with your own dogs, keep your attention on your own dogs, this will also keep the attention of the guard dog on your dogs instead of you That way you can also prevent your own dogs from making provocations or accidental threats towards the working dog Just keep walking backwards, you will not be followed by the LGD as it will have its own (imaginary) territorial borders that it won't leave br(for LGD owners, understand that if you don't teach your dog the actual borders, they will place their imaginary borders beyond the physical borders of your land Help your dog and any passers-by by teaching your dog to not react beyond the physical borders of your meadow/farm/land)

How about kicking the dog? How about reaching for a stick, if one is handy, and hitting the dog? At the moment of potentially being attacked, and especially if I have a small child, being a tree does not seem like a good idea Getting "nipped" or having my child "nipped" and doing nothing, seems ridiculous to me Animals battle each other in the wild all the time I don't think any of them, if intent on attacking, will run away from a foe if he acts like a tree I am sorry, but that advice might get someone killed

What I usually do is stop, drop and roll Oh, wait That's when you're on fire 😅brbrKidding aside I just try to maintain my composure Just keep walking on a steady but alert pace And, make the dogs feel that I'm in command and they're just dogs When you get scared, just stop and do the same thing, -which is asserting your dominance over them It really does work They'd still keep on barking But, you'll notice that their barks have soften and dogs slowly back off like its trying to look like it has maintained its bravery Sometimes, I greet or befriend it with "hello" It gives off a signal that you're not afraid and they just do nothing, walk back like it's thinking that I'm no funbrbrMy brother does one other totally different approach when a dog is charging He quickly gets close to the ground like he's crouched and yells at the dog to come charge at him! 😅🤣 The dogs immediately stops and retreat while still barking like its confused 😅

20-30 people are killed by dog attacks in the US each year It’s rare, but worth being prepared for beyond covering your head and your neck OC spray can be very effective at repelling dogs I carry POM OC It also wouldn’t hurt to learn how to throw a good front kick
