The idea of packing clothes for the first few days, bathroom essentials, etc - Light blub - I have a packing list for long trips/camping and that will work perfectly for a move!

For large furniture like dressers, leave the drawers full, pull them out, load the dresser and load the drawers back in Reverse the process when you get to the new home This eliminates having to pack and unpack those clothes, etc and they don't take up extra space on the moving truck

I know this is probably an unpopular opinion but I do use bubble wrap - I have moved across country and had enough things broken to not want to go through that againbrI save good bubble wrap from packages I receive, in boxes buried down the back of a storage area (not like it needs to be super accessible!) And i do use it between moves for sending things by mail, but mostly it's there for the next move and it doesn't take up that much space all toldbrI can't use socks to wrap all my ornaments and pictures etc, and buying picture boxes is more expensive!brAs long as you're not going completely nuts and wrapping things which don't need it, and don't plan on throwing ALL the bubble wrap away at the other end, I don't think it's a problem

I am just renting a dumpster Everything that makes the keep pile goes into storage (I have a 6 month gap between selling my current place and new house) I am not planning or counting on moving all my stuff at once, just moving in one room at a time I will NOT have boxes for years It is going to be a disaster! 🤣

A tip for those interested in the color coding method - make corresponding index cards with a swatch of color for each room, and tape them above each doorway For upstairs rooms, make a key of those rooms and tape them next to the staircase downstairs brbrThanks for the great tips!

20 years ago I made a mistake of putting the stuff I wanted into black garbage bags and an old man That was trying to help me take stuff out to the garbage He took my brand new quilt and brand new sheets and everything and clothing to the garbage

I think the best moving tip advice comes from military families, because we have to do it so much A funny story from when we were overseas that turned into a great tip The movers that were hired didn't speak really good english, and we have to look at every item as it is coming into the property from the truck So they ended up labeling each room with numbers, and they asked us which room each box went in It was such a smooth move The funniest part of the story is that we actually forgot to take the post it notes down, so when we moved 4 years later, the post it notes were used for moving out as well

One thing about paper in filing cabinets: paper is heavy My advice is to actually taking it out and packing them separately! It may sound like extra work, but once (we move a lot!) the movers didn’t, and the legs of our expensive and fancy filing cabinet got bent We could never straighten them completely and now every time I look at it, I get reminded of this

I also learned to NUMBER YOUR BOXES and packages, and count them as you put them in the truck so ypu can count them while unloading specially if you are in the old place and other person is receiving in the new placebrNever put a "valuables" label, just put a code word you and your family will understand but preferably dont put them in a moving truck, carry them in your car or in a backpack brAlways check how many pieces does an appliance have so if someone takes them off you will know how many they were (we didn't notice the movers took the stove tray out and we lost it)

I DID de-clutter before my last move, but I didn't get rid of enough I also used a legal pad to list each box's contents Ex: Pots and pans, glass baking dishes, custard cups It was pretty detailed, but it really helped me to track down the box I needed if I was looking for a specific item I've been procrastinating, but my PLAN is to de-clutter a little each month so I'm NOT de-cluttering by the next time I HOPE to move I need to get on that now that I have a little more time on my hands I REALLY want to move less stuff for my benefit (fewer boxes might cost less to move) and the benefit of the movers (less physical exertion) I also plan to get a downstairs apartment this time so things will be easier to bring in for the movers With a PREVIOUS move I believe a whole box was lost I had a little table with a heart shaped top Not sure why the packers didn't put the bottom legs part of the table with the top, but I ended up with half a table That's the reason I listed each box and most of its contents on that legal pad Worked for me, and I plan to do it again

I save my flyers for wrapping paper because they don’t give off newsprint and don’t cost me anything but I put paper plates between my dishes I use coffee filters between my mugs coffee cups

We didnt unpack any clothing drawers, we to the moving suran wrap and after removing the drawer from the dresser wrapped the plastic wrap, i notated which dresser and drawer location on a index card and taped it to the top If i remembered before wrapping i put it in the drawer first I started packing up our home the day we decided to shop for a new house Moving day actually wasn't too bad, we had very few boxes placed inthe wrong area

Cass I normally love all of your tips, however, we are a military family and have moved umpteen million times with movers Your tip in leaving the small items in the bigger furniture is a disaster waiting to happen with movers You have no idea what topsy turvy weirdness will happen to the things inside the drawers, etc It will be a hot, tangled mess, even damaged when you open your things in your new home

I like to take my extra boxes, and packing materials/bubblewrap, that I am finished with to my local UHaul to donate for others to use brMost moving places have a spot to put that stuff🌞
