"No joins are required" and "no migrations requred" are only true in some cases, and not only for Mongo: most SQL databases are capable of storing binary JSON as well with all benefits of it The real power of Mongo is in its SCALABILITY (at cost of losing consistency and SQL-ish functionality, which for many apps is ok)

MongoDB basic tier is only $9 so much cheaper than any RDBS on cloud It also supports ACID transactions at some extent so it is arguably a general purpose DB Mind you that it also uses B-tree indexes so it's not objectively faster than a traditional SQL DB

MongoDB is my database of choice Great integration with common languages and its very to use, especially in languages which natively support JSON-like data structures like JS, Python, Groovy, etc Classic databases like SQL seem obsolete in comparison with structure obviously designed to squeeze every last bit of memory/disk storage of early computers and which despite this are not all that scalable as one would think they should be given their structure

Mongo is an insult that means something along the lines of retard in German (iirc it comes from an old word for people with Down's Syndrome) It's considered kind of inappropriate / politically incorrect, which makes it all the more hilarious that this is the name of one of the most popular databases
