Drink packages, photos and specialty dining are all something we don’t use any money MSC has very reasonable price excursions and we also like priority check in

And the cruise ship screw the poor businesses into the ground We wanted to go on bike tour in NZ but the price on ship brochure was prohibitive, we went onland and went I to the local caravan park, asked if they hired out the bikes, explained we were from the ship, we got the bike , helmet and padlock with no time restriction and off we went, we ended up catching up with the cruise excursion, hung off the back and got all the commentary The price was about a fifth of ship excursion Caravan park did give us a brochure of local attractions etc I have heard from local operators how unfair the cruise ships are to them

I agree with all of this except if you’ve never done a Chefs table you should do it once This used to be one of those hidden offerings, you could only reserve onboard and it was done once/cruise Now it is every day and can be booked in advance It’s usually like 7 courses with a wine pairing for each Try it

I you can afford shelling out $4K for a balcony stateroom most of the expenses you mention are trivial at best

Going on first cruise this June - Royal Caribbean- Wonder of the Seas It’ll be be me & my wife, sister-in-law & her husband, and 2 of my adult children & their partners I don’t think we’re going to buy any of the add-ones Was going to get the premium drink package, but I don’t think it’s worth it The most alcoholic drinks I’m likely have is no more than 5 in a day…and I generally don’t drink soda, unless it’s coke in a rum & coke

David Swarter
Since my fiancé and I aren’t big drinkers Would you recommend getting CruiseCash for our carnival cruise instead of the drink packages?

Most people fail to realize that even though gratuities are automatically placed on your sign and sail receipt, they are NOT mandatory You can opt out and pay what ever you deem necessary to each worker during your stay instead of letting the cruise line force you to pay a predetermined amount Today's tipping culture has conditioned people to feel obligated to tip for nearly everything or be shamed for not doing so The cruise lines use this as leverage to charge "automatic" gratuity fees This not only serves as a means to pad their profit margin by not paying their workers a livable wage but also to shame their customers into mitigating their unfair compensation policies Being an accountant for 2 major cruise lines, I know that only 20 - 25 of the pool of gratuity payments actually go to the workers The rest is kept by the cruise line as miscellaneous profit to be paid for expense accounts and bonuses Also, note that cruise lines charge a gratuity fee for EVERYTHING you purchase outside of your inclusive package br brOne executive at Royal Caribbean, told me that the gratuity system is set up to pay for executive bonuses An executive at Carnival told me that it was a "fools" tax for the customer Cruise spokespeople like to mention the hard work of the crew and if you don't agree to pay the gratuity that you are cheating the workers out of a living DON'T BELIEVE THIS NONESENSE The bulk of the gratuity is going to the executives; not the workers br brSo, the next time you book a cruise and see the option to "pre-pay" for gratuities or see it on your final bill, you will know that only a small portion of it is actually going to the worker and that you are indeed paying a "fools" tax If you choose to tip your worker, do it DIRECTLY and according to the level and quality of service given

Titilayo
We were on a Panama Canal cruise on Princess and we got the picture package as it was only $200 for the full 15 day cruise brWell worth it that time as the photographers were very good at taking picture but more importantly they were very good at photoshop brOther cruises we have been on the photographers were good It photoshop skill were very poor
Comment from : Titilayo

Jason Foster
If you are going to scrooge that much, why bother going on a cruise
Comment from : Jason Foster

Carolynn Mathisen
I agree Not worth it to worry
Comment from : Carolynn Mathisen

Spencer Schulz
Like listening to Edward Norton lol 😂
Comment from : Spencer Schulz

Jack Shea
I agree with most points Except Rccl's The Key usually includes priority for some activities, which is clutch on a crowded ship It also includes wifi for 1 device(per Key holder) That's better than their current wifi packages
Comment from : Jack Shea

John Waller
Really goof video thank you!
Comment from : John Waller

Mohammed Hussein
drink packages are great because i usually drink something like 15-25 per day!
Comment from : Mohammed Hussein

triracialbeauty
Eh The Cheers! package on Carnival includes a lot more than alcohol
Comment from : triracialbeauty

Mary Dungan
I don't like that you diss the art auctions I love going to them, as well as the informational sessions they have Every piece of artwork in my home is off of a Carnival cruise ship, and they are beautiful and reasonably priced The cost is not a lot, as you say Maybe you should research this before offering an opinion
Comment from : Mary Dungan

Goth_Angel30 🌺💗
I don't find any of these a waste of money if your on the royal Caribbean you can get a drinks package and its worth it because its an unlimited drinks package and if you want bring a an art work home you I don't see why any of this wasting especially getting professional photos there memory's and I you thinking that the food is a waste of money but the chefs work hard to make delicious food I know it looks too good demolish but before you eat the food it is photo material so you don't miss seeing what food you ate like a cruise isn't about wasting money because the food and drinks are included and if your on royal Caribbean you can get a photo package
Comment from : Goth_Angel30 🌺💗

JT Coffee
I agree on everything except the shops on board That is something I like to do is buy a souvenir from the ship Usually, a refrigerator magnet but sometimes my 11 year old wants a teddy bear
Comment from : JT Coffee

Paul Gerrard
A further warninghandbag watches jewellery and other sales Knock off copies and terrible value Just ignore these In Alaska watch for the fake gem scam Tanzanite sales like its a rare gem Its a cheap blue colour stone and is not scarce Its a con to sell you overpriced rubbish When you see the 35 stores all selling this in the touristy port you can be sure its worthless
Comment from : Paul Gerrard

Paul Gerrard
In the numerous cruises i have taken i have seen few cruise tour activities that are exclusive Nearly all are also sold on the dock and you will save 50 and still be with other passengers Same with cruise tour extensions like Alaskacan be a third the cost arranged privately
Comment from : Paul Gerrard

petpillow
I did a mixology course on a cruise and it cost $18, I consumed about 13 martinis in the space of an hour and was obliterated
Comment from : petpillow

Astrid Culver
I find that booking excursions through a 3rd party saves you so much money The ship excursions are a rip-off and the odds of something going wrong are so minimal I have never had an issue Getting black on the ship We just give ourselves a time buffer just in case
Comment from : Astrid Culver

Robert E
Sonwhat is not a ripoff? U mentioned everything thwre is
Comment from : Robert E

Taylor Jones
If you’re a new cruiser and are worried abt time on the ports and if you’ll have enough time Cruises will never leave their own excursions If you book outside a cruise ship and you’re not back in time they’ll leave you So if you’re a new person and worried about time I recommend just doing it through the cruise and pay $40-50 extra bucks just to make sure you’ll never be left Idk how often ppl get left but just know cruises will leave without you, could happen, it could not happen who knows but they won’t leave their own excursions even if they’re late they’ll delay leaving
Comment from : Taylor Jones

Taylor Jones
6-8 drinks a day??? That’s it?? i can drink 8 beers and be fine I’m not saying my age but 😭 def get the drink package
Comment from : Taylor Jones

surlywithfabshoes
In the auction area you should avoid waving at one another or you’ll end up with art that you have to pay to mail home…

Why are you going on a cruise if you can't Afford It People kill me they knit pick about everything You probably need to take your little penny pinching butt home I'm so sick to death of Fun killers

Live a little If you can afford it, have fun You’re on vacation
Comment from : A V

Darkpaw TheWolf
It's interesting that a lot of the things that you recommend here are the exact opposite of another popular channel's recommendations I guess it depends on the traveler, and what you're looking for on the cruise For example, the drink packages probably work well for young people just looking to party in the Caribbean, but don't work for people like me looking to cruise Alaska I'm hardly going to drink alcohol on the cruise, because I don't want to miss the scenery, and the cost of non-alcoholic drinks on the trip would never break even
Comment from : Darkpaw TheWolf

Phillip Vietri
I honestly have no use for a cruise To be cooped up on a ship, no matter how big, with hundreds of people with money and no class, looking for entertainment; not for me! I always travel alone I also visit places of interest to me, be they Moscow, Prague or Budapest, and to spend days there soaking up the atmosphere The journey is to get there, nothing more Sorry, I know I am in a vast minority, but I'd rather fly first class and get to my destination quickly Marshall McLuhan once said of communication, "the medium is the message" Not for me The journey is definitely not the holiday For people who like cruises, enjoy, shveetheart, enjoy I will not be amongst you
Comment from : Phillip Vietri

Rick Korzeniowski
Thanks Much appreciated I there a term for cruising at no extra cost? Slang term? Just asking
Comment from : Rick Korzeniowski

Catherine The Carnivore RN
This is so subjective Great info for sure but hopefully someone doesn’t skip something they would have enjoyed
Comment from : Catherine The Carnivore RN

Chris Oliver
For the drink packages - I would say that you'll probably consume more drinks on sea days and private island days than on port days So factor in getting off the ship on port days and realize that you won't be onboard to drink the 'included' drinks Itineraries with lots of port days might not be cost effective for drink packages If you do purchase a drink package - keep an eye out for pre-cruise sales around holidays Don't wait until you board the ship to order the drink package
Comment from : Chris Oliver

Scott
I do agree with you on most of your recommendations except one I had purchased a bracelet at “recommend” jewelry store and one of the stores came loose and lost The cruise line did secure a prompt refund
Comment from : Scott

charles w
#1 waste is the cruise itself
Comment from : charles w

After taking 1567 cruises i wholeheartedly disagree to every one of your points Good day sir

My wife and I have been on 10 cruises I save a fortune by buying the drink package last cruise i drank at least 15 long island ice teas A Day and drank 20 one day one guy I met asked me how I was still standing LOL I just have a very high tolerance! also, now if you live in Texas you don't save a lot by buying alcohol at the shops but i have brought home as many as 17 bottles in 1 trip to stock my own boat and saved a few 100 from not buying them on land! now for the lobster you mentioned around home any lobster will cost you 25 to 30 bucks so paying 20 bucks for them while you're on vacation is a must! hell it's been at least 20 years since I have gone out to eat on land and sprang for one but I love them
Comment from : ken may

fairamir1
I would just buy my own bottle of Gin

A Very Stable Genius
Why go on a cruise in the first place if the best values are on land at the ports of call, and anything charging a fee on the boat is to be avoided?
Comment from : A Very Stable Genius

David Ulrich LDJ
I’ve served in many officer roles on several cruise lines I was also a shopping guide YES - the shops we recommend are legit And covered if you have a problem HOWEVER - you NEED TO KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING Get with the Shopping Guide and let them know - "I'm appraising this the moment I get home, I'd appreciate if you and I could meet in the store and negotiation with me" Now - the shopping guide isn't going to make an appointment shoreside for a bobble This is for significant purchases If they happen to have a shopping hour in a particular store - GO THERE They are watching every sale And prices are 9/10 cheaper than others brbrThe BEST ADVICE I can give as a shopping guide - even if you don’t go to the lectures - shop ONLY in the recommended stores and TELL YOUR SALES PERSON BEFORE YOU BUY that you are excited to show your ships shopping guide what you purchased and how good a deal you were given ALL salespeople know this guide and they know they can’t screw you over if your going to show off your purchase!!!brbrAs a former art auctioneer - DO NOT BUY ART I can assure you - you are being ripped off by this 3rd party company I went through a ton of training When I got onboard and saw what I was selling - I quit after three weeks I couldn’t look people in the eyes and sell posters as “art”
Comment from : David Ulrich LDJ

james ward-gwilliam
As someone that used to work in shore excursion I may be very biased but I disagree with your one about excursions I've led and participated in many excursions as employee and customer Only a few I would say were not worth the money brbrWhat I would say is really read through each one thoroughly to see if it's for you and how the excursion is broken down
Comment from : james ward-gwilliam

cafsixtieslover
I would say that anything that you have to pay for in addition to the basic cost of the cruise is unnecessary We only eat and drink what is provided in the cost We have water in the main restaurant or tea or coffee in the buffet or buy soft drinks onshore I never visit the spa or casino and we take our own photos We can happily live without onboard wifi and if I need to phone someone I do so in port or in dock Unless I get onboard credit, I only purchase a ship's teddy bear and a fridge magnet I do excursions with the ship so I know the ship will wait for me but only if there is no other way of getting there and I limit them to one per cruise
Comment from : cafsixtieslover

grande of Renzo
Was on a carnival cruise and went the the seminar talking about all the ports of calls, they were giving away prizes throughout the event some of the prizes were 20 off a short excursion so they're giving you is 20 off a $100-500 bill want great marketing ploy, congratulations you won the privilege of giving us another $$$ for something you wouldn't have spent money on other wise
Comment from : grande of Renzo

Gail Kemp
My husband and I purchase the drink package because it includes speciality coffee beverages and we like our coffee! We also drink soda drinks and enjoy wine at dinner and an alcoholic beverage at the evening shows It's a break even for us If you have lots of ports, I don't recommend it--you are just turning yourself into an alcoholic by trying to get "your moneys worth"--not a great idea to get the drink package
Comment from : Gail Kemp

5stardave
What's not worth it to one person is totally worth it to another The cruise itself may not be worth the money
Comment from : 5stardave

Steeltoro
These are VERY much subjective to the person that is cruising To call them "complete wastes of money" is a bit presumptuous
Comment from : Steeltoro

Fraser at Sea
I couldn't agree more with the 'onboard photographs' and 'priority boarding' points - I've never actually got to the port early enough to know that priority boarding is even a thing, ha! The onboard photographs really make me laugh - so many great photo opportunities onboard, yet so many ships have those tacky backdrops instead
Comment from : Fraser at Sea

Mary V
I don't agree with the casino comments A lot of players gets comps on cruises destinations and travel just paying taxes
Comment from : Mary V

dwill123
How about $60 for two minutes of 'fake' sky diving

Consider all of the things you are telling people not to do, help keep the cost of the cruise price down a bit !! But to each your own
Comment from : Bill Zinkhan

Shay J
I personally would not tell a cruiser how to spend their money especially since your vacation dollars are yours to spend as such In my 20 years of cruising I’ve maybe purchased 5 art pieces and 2 of them get rave reviews when guests come to my home Worth the money to me I also purchase the alcohol package and I come out ahead I don’t just drink beer and house wine, in fact when you dine in dining room the wine and spirits are top shelf and different from the main bars Regarding the spa there are some services that are similar in price if not cheaper than most Book an appointment on a day the ship is docked and you will get discounts Also there are raffle for spa services too I will agree that it is cheaper to do your own land tours We like to hire a personal driver for the intimacy and the flexibility However this may not be for everyone and of course you need to be safe Happy cruising, I’m about to cruise for the first time since the pandemic
Comment from : Shay J

Jamming
I agree with most of the tips but one, the spa treatments are not much more than what you find off the ship at home I do agree they try to up sell the products but which spas don’t lol I’ve been on 8 cruises, I’ve had at least 5 massages and well worth it!
Comment from : Jamming

Von Dez
What ship is this?

Comment from : Foxy Grandpa

Sub Zippo
I got a RC photo package, something like $30 for 5 photos I thought it was reasonable Perhaps a selfie stick would have been a better investmentbrAlso did the RC drink package twice When I did the math I think it was 5-6 drinks per day, and we got our money's worth, down to the last minute when they had to kick us out of the Windjammer brDid have a terrible experience paying a premium for Jamie Oliver's Italian once though Its enough to turn me off premium dining forever Main dining is way better
