What I loved about this martial art was that if you happen to slip or dropped your knee unintentionally Authorware hit by your opponent you could still function in that range as you said it was elbow range for the legs knees and hips I don’t know any other martial art that had anything in that rangebrOne of the most risky yet painful and unorthodox techniques I saw and learned in the system was dropping your knee right on to your opponents instep breaking the small bones in his feet and once you’re in that range since you have the foot pain with your kneeYou elbow or push hard on the knee It seems like it won’t work but it’s so out there your opponent never expected especially if you’re infighting Comment from : CREATIVE CARICATURE MARKETING CONSULTANT |

I remember in the 80s when I was attacked in the subway in Brooklyn New York my opponent wasn’t wearing a shirt as in the summer I remember he came in on me I did the slapping technique to deflect his initial strike followed by a barrage of other slaps to other parts of his body He recoiled back in horror and Pain checking his body because he thought he was either shot or stabbed That’s when he backed away from me and started screaming to the top of his lungs don’t come back here tomorrow I’ll get my gang! L O L He was so freaked out he want to know more parts of me that my train came to police officers got off and I got on Comment from : CREATIVE CARICATURE MARKETING CONSULTANT |

That heavy smack technique is found in other arts like Russian Sistema and also a Streetheart call 52 blocks which I learned as a teenager growing up in Brooklyn 52 would often slab wood bead on what ever presented itself whether it with your fist up your forearm your shoulder your chestAnd especially your face If you grew up in the 70s and live in an urban neighborhood you probably noticed a lot of kids slap boxing That’s a component of the 52 also slap to the face so it’s not to break the hands and hit hard to the body Comment from : CREATIVE CARICATURE MARKETING CONSULTANT |

|
SilatWas something I was introduced to from the Filipino martial arts it was the empty hand component of the artWhat I loved about it was that it complemented the stick fighting and felt totally natural I have years of Karate training, and you always feel like you’re forcing your body into a square peg which you are! S I LAT Feels like something your body wants to do naturally the techniques flow right into each other like water Comment from : CREATIVE CARICATURE MARKETING CONSULTANT |

Which Silat form is best suited for street and multiple opponents? What about Kuntao? Comment from : Aryan Kumar |

A long time ago in army cobmatives I used to elbow the thighs really hard to break open guards That worked on people who didn't know what we were doing Now having done jiujitsu we don't do that obviously, but I wonder sometimes if it would work Most people would probably just open it up to play open guard anyways, but if somebody really wanted to keep it closed you know? those extra movement you said in silat is a programming, its called 'Bunga' means 'flower' flowing bloming its like when a threat entered your bunga (also area/sphere of attack, your body will automaticly react to it by muscle memory the best result possible without the practitioner thinking (like its easy for the brain to remember words by singing or in a melodic way, its easy for your body to remember movement by 'bunga' or 'the flow' its like a flow of system the movement keeps moving instead of staticly stopiing and change the direction, flow has more momentum, u can redirect the impact) example, when u see the bunga palm outwards meaning those are for catching and grabbing, palm inside is to ready for a strike so it keep changing and flowing nicely like a flower or a plantbrbryour bunga can change to a close and tight bunga depending who you fighting if you have more than 2 opponent they usually make a big bunga to basicly to register the distance for your strike combo you already extended your limbs before you even fight, so they have to enter, you just have to received it and ready for the combobrbrthe bunga after years of practise will make your strike and movement sharper and harder if you only focus on practicality ONLY you'll miss the extra sauce of getting it sharper it has no different than karate or take kwen do if you do that, static and stiff thats why even for you after years of training your movement doesnt look like a master compared it to the actual silat master, the form it self makes u think twice the bunga is to help you lvl up your already capped strikes/combos make it more deep flavor, just like u said, to hurt the inside rather than outsidebrbrthats why silat masters strikes hurts longer Comment from : CRUZEOO |

This has to be one of the coolest martial arts channels - LOVE that you cover different arts with an OPEN mind brbrMost, if they cover other arts other than the UFC 4 (Maui Thai, wrestling, boxing and of course BJJ), crap all over any other In my experience, every art has something to offer except Brutalism in architecture Comment from : D Posting |

The point is that everyone can die in any way and under any circumstances, God always has a way to take the life of his servant, even people who are skilled in martial arts can die just by stepping on a banana peel or falling in the bathroom, without a fight So don't ever think that someone who learns pencak silat or is an expert in pencak silat will always win a fight, because it all depends on each individual Basically the best martial arts is being able to keep one's feelings in check and being able to control oneself Comment from : Felix Young |

You say there's no single answer to everything, but how about JJJ? Comment from : Peter Pifagorass |
|
Silat is a great and lethal martial art The only problem is the sparing is very soft brSince I combine silat with eskrima and muay thai brWhen I trained in JKD my instructor said every martial art have strength and weakness and If you want be a complete fighter you have to practice a several martial arts Comment from : Elon Mask |
|
The "esoteric" aspects of Silat train the mind Having a sense of complete awareness and Connectedness to everything gives a calmness required in any self defense brNo Silat guru would ever get entangled on the ground Every apponent has 4 friends and at least two knives One-on-one does not exist The competition fighting is a phase one practice brSilat is the only martial art that would encourage you to train with other masters or Gurus or Sifus or Sensei Most instructors or systems seem afraid of what you might learn from another instructor, or be lured away brSilat workshops are the least expensive trainings you will ever attend Comment from : Adaptive Arts |

I think the pure silat is not for the game, all the trick is used with every part and every move of body to hit the most weak part of body that can make minimal failed of knee or maybe deadly I have old uncle (he waa died) who learn the silat kampung (small villlage) of course he's not strong than me as a young man but and times he show the practise of silat always make me a little scream of hurt, he knows every part weak point of human body so well Pure silat full of tricky But I'm not practisi silat 😅 Comment from : achmad akbar |
|
Most of foreigner will missed the culture background of pencak silat Back in colonial era silat training was banned by the dutch thus the master disguised as cultural activity such as tari/dance and wayang orang similar to perfirmance and stuff to passed it on and not to let the culture died and sign of resistance This aspect often caried over to modern silat This is also a reason why some pencak silat perguruan still use music Comment from : RePhantomz |

I have this one friend who's practice pencak silat brfoolishly, out of my ignorance and little cockiness i try to test his martial art prowess in pretense of having fun br(fyi, at that time i was blue red belt in taekwondo) brand believe me, brmy head nearly hit the floor in just seconds that's how fast my friend subdue me with his silat brto top it off, he even held me to prevent my head to hit the cold floor my body position is literally upside down bri even didn't realize how i in that position brsuddenly my view just turned 180° 😂brthat was a mistake but also enlighten me to realize that i'm not suited in close range combat Comment from : DevilOpment |

about your first point of negative things in silat maybe when you learn about silat there is some form which is named by tepak dua or tepak tilu ( clap 2 or clap 3) its meaned to reach target by 2 movement or 3 movement the first movement in tepak dua made as decoy and the secound movement is for hitting target, also on tepak tilu the first and the secound movement just for decoy and the third for the target thats why its seems like unnecessary movement Comment from : Super Opik |

no the Un necessary Movement is the Actual Training are you sure you have trained in Silat? Comment from : KOBKED-X |

The weakness he mentioned, lack of instinctive reaction, for many Silat systems is true brbrWhen I trained with Pendekar Paul De Thousars he taught crashing entries, The prayer, The prayer asking for Forgiveness, and the quizzitive, hmmm, you might be right pose to name a few instinctive entriesbrbrOn 1st seeing them I knew the Pendekar had some understanding of human fear response psychology, street fighting, and I was hooked brbrI still teach them to Woman and children when they ask me to teach them self-defense brbrI call them the “Please, Please don’t hurt me” covers and simultaneous entriesbrbrI still miss Pendekar RIPbrbrCurrently I believe the best systems for instinctive entries for a street fight/self-defense encounter are from Defence Lab (DL) and Keysi (KFM) Comment from : Chavel Diaz |
|
you're right about the ground game of silat it's a big negative for the art it always assumes you have the best position on the groundand the other person is helpless Comment from : Peter Brennan |

I learned Silat from Sifu Joseph Simonet It's the base of my fundamentals mixed with Doce Pares & Wing Chun creating seamless transitions between all three brbrPriceless! Comment from : Michael Morrison |

With its many traditional facets, its hundreds of styles, the complexity of its movements, its soft and hard techniques, etc, it seems to me like Silat bears a superficial resemblance to Kung Fu Comment from : Benjamin Forster |

I'm a Wang Chung guy loose 15 years, if you look at Adam Chan kung-fu report and go to his oldest videos there's this guy Steve Smith that's basically the same spiritual and moral Wang Chung style I was taught It's super versatile, so simple it confused the hell out of me for years I've never seen people talk about the steping drills I was taught, or wrist conditioning, almost no internet content is traditional Wang Chung It's basterdated pretty badly, wich deserves to be made fun of Love your content Comment from : Kenneth Chapin |
|
I've always been interested in Silat, but never knew what it was aside from looking like Chinese martial arts with karate's stiffness I also recognize the guy at 7:45 from Indonesian movies (I think The Raid) and John Wick 3 Need to learn some of these masters' names Comment from : Ninjhetto NLK3 |

My man, if you think relaxed power is cool, have you heard of this thing called tai chi? ;) (ok, sure, most of it's fake, but the real deals are out there) Also, there's a good reason a lot of stuff like Silat aren't trained in the easiest/fastest to learn way possible Because they WORK, and if you teach a bunch of randos deadly shit, it's just a matter of time before that bites you in the ass Also, the popo won't be too pleased Comment from : hostnik |

Lol! Need? Want? May be for some, but never need Comment from : Sportmuaythai V |

At 4 mins 48 is a guy who regularly trains with a friend of mine in Cambridge I think his name is Maul but not sure, to be honest you did have his name but I have the memory of a goldfishbrI was always tempted to go train but it always seemed a bit complicated to me My background is I am one of the 100m Shotokan although probably one of the worst and believe less in style and more in application as we are all different I also trained Tang soo and some goju ryu so it was really interesting about the relaxed slapping which is very similar principle to striking principle in goju ryu Really interesting video thanks for posting, unfortunately at 55 and having the flexibility of a breeze block my Silat opportunities have now passed Thanks again Comment from : Andrew The Carpet Cleaner |

Please repost that video I would love to see it Comment from : The Bane King |

Thanks for the video man I'm not that familiar with Silat and Kuntao practices, but as far as the Chinese influenced ones I have seen some of Bob Orlando's, and Ron Kosakowski's stuff I am more familiar with iron palm from several variations that I practiced when I was younger From the description of what you experienced with the soft relaxed wave power It sounds like it may be some form of iron palm The legitimate practices were designed to transfer striking energy to the bones and internal organs instead of just striking the surface Comment from : Jason Phillips |
