But I read a book about POW in the StatesThey got treated good The only thing there were radical germans who took revenge on their own germans if they said something bad aboud Hitler, some even got killed from there own peopleAnd they just told the military it was a accident, and nobody would say something, because the other germans were affraid of there own people Comment from : woody woodall |

The common belief that food rationing was primarily to feed out servicemen is wrong and was war propaganda After all, there were the same number of American mouths to feed after war was declared as before Rationing was in place because America was also feeding Britain and Russia Ironically, Britain actually did not ration some goods that Americans were forced to Comment from : Patrick Childs |

Such a shame the family farms are almost gone Comment from : Ellen Madsen |

It's was doubly tragic that Europeans and Americans wound up on opposite sides in contrived wars The culprits were their treasonous 'leaders' who forced these wars to please international banksters with a horribly warped agenda Comment from : karen Carter |

Just to change it a bit, when I was a very small boy, we lived next to a farm, and our house backed on to the fields Shortly after the war, Italian prisoners worked in the fields and they used to come to talk to us I remember being amazed that they had sweets and chocolate, which they shared with us -our parents couldn’t get such things as they were rationed! We all felt a bit sad when they went home, as they were such a cheerful bunch who were always very kind and happy to talk to us Comment from : Citizen |

It's interesting that they said that they didn't want to eat corn or felt odd about eating it As a European myself, corn (we call it porumb in my country) yes is fed to pigs or geese for fattening You will not find it on a European table to eat (in Europe) At least I didn't being raised up in Europe My aunt made corn once and it was something new for me It wasn't served as part of dinner though Neither is pasta to guests It's known as poor man's food But in the US having such a mix of cultures and people coming from so many different countries, their is such an abundance of varying food that is eaten in the US Comment from : Eden67 |

WONDERFUL slice of Americana! Thanks!! Comment from : Jason Rodgers |

Stop romanticizing this episode in American History The POWs were treated better than the Black Americans who fought and put their lives on the line for America, to come home and be treated as 2nd class, less than POWs Comment from : Auntie Dee Dee |

Lake Wabaunsee outside of Eskridge, KS was built with German POW's out of Leavenworth The barracks can still be seen and the officer's mess hall is currently a restaurant Comment from : Mr D |

Would've been curious on how our American soldiers returning home from Europe felt hearing all those high praises of German POW's in their hometowns and familles working the family farms, and worse yet an older or younger sister or aunt marrying an exPOW Comment from : Richard Morales |
