I feel like people are kind of missing the point, saying that BaM's redesigns are uglier BaM deliberately overexaggerated their designs to make their point clear Sure, I preferred the original squid girl, but the point of the exercise wasn't to make her more appealing, it was to show how shape language changes a design Of course in a real character design you could pull back on that, maybe include some more circular shapes to combine "friendly" and "speedy", but BaM was starting at level 1 and showing how bone shape/b can exaggerate a designbrbrIgnore the grumbly comments, BaM This video has been really helpful for me and I'm sure many other artists feel the same!

You speak a bit too confidently on these tips, these are not catch all methods and usually only work if youre doing really simple stuff for a kids show Chances are if you religiously followed all these tips, you would have a boring design

The thing about gathering referencebrYou see, that does not work for me The way I see things makes everything meaningless It's all just another grey hitbox woth barely any variation That's just how I see the world, and it's not like I can change that This is why I don't gather reference It doesn't fucking work for me It's not like I could just wake up one day and see what all of you see! Realizing I like about half of the "bad" designs and dislike about half of the "good" designs really emphasizes how subjective character design is, and how much you need to keep the art direction and design of the world itself in mind Like that big dude who was designed on the lineup from Turkey, I liked the redesign other than the placement of the head, but I also think the original designs there, as samey as they are, could work really well in an adult comedy with pacing and humor like Aqua Teen Hunger Force brI'm glad you brought up that style vs tone idea later in the video

I know I'm pretty late to this party (but hey, evergreen content, right?)brBut I see a lot of questioning on the squid girlbrI think that the thing is that the first one has more broad appeal, but the second one emphasizes who the character is intended to be within the chosen shape languagebrHad they picked more round, shapes she probably wouldn't be gaunt like the triangle version, for examplebrThe point wasn't "this one is more appealing" it was "this one tells a better story"brThe first is pretty generic, and we get swashbuckling adventure, but being generic, she could be just about anythingbrThe triangle is a haggard, dangerous sea witchbrI would wager a more rounded design might be a bright-eyed outgoing adventurer with an indomitable spiritbrbrI actually wish they had shown reinterpreting a single drawing into three separate characters, solely using shape language I think that would've delivered the point of that segment better, but it still makes sense what they're demonstrating

Being the car guy I am, my mind immediately thought of how these could apply to car designs in both real life and in media There could be fear in seeing three large, square,black ⬛ SUVs punching through a fence, taking the entire road and charging at you You'd expect a boldly-coloured sportscar made with triangles🔺, such as those from Lamborghini (with many sharp angles to be found), to be fast If someone appeares in a brightly-coloured circular 🟡car like a yellow Volkswagen Beetle, you'd expect him/her to be happy and usually joyful
