It honestly is not running at all if it isn't playing something or has a service What you see are just screenshots The app state is saved to disk, it couldn't keep all those in memory If it can keep them all in memory, it is not going to use any more power The reason apple says not to is because it actually uses more power because you have to completely restart the app whem you close it
