Should we encourage stemming, and will it stop after some age
Comment from : @alka2165

@prschuster
I do a lot of this myself

@markaes
My son does the running back and forth several times a day (30 minutes at a time) He's just in a complete zone, shaking his head, laughing, making beatbox noises and totally oblivious to anyone and everything around him He says he's making movies in his head He is hyper sensitive/moody and I have long suspected he's on the spectrum but his doctors and the school won't pursue it so we can't get a referral He had one appointment with the behavioral health service ($1,000) and they ghosted us Gotta love the US health system

@shanemitchell5807
Is constant farting a form of stimming? I do this on long trips all the time
Comment from : @shanemitchell5807

@mynameIwantistaken
Hi! 25 year old woman with a severe (as the doctors say) adhd diagnosis that has been in a rabbit hole of figuring out if I am autistic for 2 years now and wow the hair one got me My entire childhood and still to this day I rub my hair all over my face in the EXACT same places your son did I apparently grabbed family member's hair too before I had my own to twirl lol No matter how many times I have googled it I could only ever find anything about twirling nothing about the rub all over my face and mouth stimming I have always done Basically my essay is a thank you because I have never seen anyone ever do what I do with my hair before that video of your son and its just comforting to see people do the same things as you sometimes :)
Comment from : @mynameIwantistaken

@AnimeMangaMom365
When I was a child I would chew my hair Now I will sing and flick my fingers kinda like an inelegant air guitar I also rub my fingernail plates together for the satisfying clacking sound
Comment from : @AnimeMangaMom365

@n07the3gg
Im constantly touching my hair all the time, man So much that one minute im out the shower, the next my hair's all greasy again I also tend to pay attention to the way an object reacts to something rather than its actual function The way something i say also plays a roll in what i do to "fill the void," like a stupid meme phrase i hear (Im straying from the topic) Tightening hand muscles or making hand signs also feels really good Oh, and spinning Movements that are rhythmic, whether off-place or with a beat
Comment from : @n07the3gg

@notbrad4873
I chewed everything I got bone growths in and around my jaw from it No big deal, but all the dentists are blown away
Comment from : @notbrad4873

@whynottalklikeapirat
I’ve done stuff repetitively with my body - like getting up and going to work every day …
Comment from : @whynottalklikeapirat

@patmyles4776
I have two grandsons that are mild autistic There's a side of them that you would think was brilliant for their age, but on the other hand they might struggle in math or some other subject
Comment from : @patmyles4776

@ScomaAus
I have not been diagnosed as being on the spectrum, but when I was a child I would rub my hands together like it was cold when I was feeling particularly excited
Comment from : @ScomaAus

@toriprescott1360
I’m so glad I found your channel My son is 3 and was just diagnosed with level 1 social communication asd and level 2 repetitive behaviors I’m not sure what it all means, but how calm you are speaking about your children with autism calms me down Thank you

Sweet boys ❤
Comment from : @MartinisnOlives

@peketee2278
You could also make material about these things without showing footage of the children being talked about, but the main thing is that you get clicks😕
Comment from : @peketee2278

@carolynv8979
Thanks for including the running stim My brother and I both have that one, but I don’t see it listed as often as spinning or flapping
Comment from : @carolynv8979

@bastianogr4960
This is such an amazing and enlightening video Thank you so much! You have really sweet kids, and you're a GREAT mom!
Comment from : @bastianogr4960

@andreaharper2380
I see my daughter in your kiddos, a lot of similarities She has a lot of stims as well so I have a lot to learn when it comes to parenting gently but it is a work in progress She currently is back into chewing, she phased out for a while but it is back She spins and runs from room to room, she manipulates little toys all the time
Comment from : @andreaharper2380

@Mistymoo485
He looks like a normal kid are we sure there are levels this light of autism?br i bet that toddler leash makes him feel good
Comment from : @Mistymoo485

My son and daughter do the same thing
Comment from : @dannyangel556

@sam12587
You know how ceilings tiles have dots of texture? My stimm is I’ll make pictures out of the dots brIf it’s a textured drywall mud type ceiling I’ll do the same but it’s harder and not as fun
Comment from : @sam12587

@caratmess4930
I also flap my hands when I'm happy, but if i get really excited I squeeze both of my hands together while bringing it up to my face That sometimes causes some pains but not anything bad :3
Comment from : @caratmess4930

@TB-vz5bh
We have a 4 yo son with DSM-5 criteria , he always mentions that he wants to hurt babies , we have 2 new born babies we become little concerned about it !brIs that something we should be worried about or not ?
Comment from : @TB-vz5bh

@Sharoina
Dwl we are literally giving him trash for his birthday I couldn’t figure out why my son use to find toys in things I see as trash He use paper to play and make things tear up papers and play with or make configurative he said He’s 9 My 7 yr loves to put things in his mouth, cover his ears and they both love collecting the strange things you speak of, 7yr old loves to jump and run sometimes I get scared I need a child leash for my 7 yr too as when we are on the road he will just be jumping and skipping, on Saturday I literally had to hold on to the tail of his shirt to keep him close to me while we walked on the busy road and loud noises of vehicles startled him too so I have to be careful he’s doesn’t jump or run across the road when an unexpected vehicle approaches Sudden changes too will cause him to get moody or have an meltdown So it’s always good to prep them before any major change in certain activities or plan events🙏🏾
Comment from : @Sharoina

@andrewmanduluru7870
Soooooo when we going to stop poisoning kids at birth???
Comment from : @andrewmanduluru7870

@TeaWithTheAuthor
Just cause somebody is different doesnt mean its autism Mainly when it drastically interrupts normal functions, thats when it should be diagnosed or labeled Not before
Comment from : @TeaWithTheAuthor

@friggintourist7751
I don't know if it counts as a stim but i used to stand on the sides of my feet a lot and like kinda go back and forth between standing normally and on the sides of my feet I did it a lot when standing in one place for a long time I don't do it as an adult though
Comment from : @friggintourist7751

@L110508
This is no autism or very mild (border line) It would be gone when he gets older I think the assesment is too sensitive, they basically want every kids to behave or think the same way Just look at adult's life, everybody is unique, it's just adults are good in changing forms (pretending) according to the needs
Comment from : @L110508

@Ludwig1954
I am an Autist (Asperger Variety) and was diagnosed very late - in my sixties - after lifelong misdiagnosisbrStimming is a very important mechanism in my lifebr- Lip lickingbr- Beard stroking and combingbr- Repetion of words and soundsbr- Fidget Toys and haptic adress of small objectsbr- rough tremors in right leg and armbr- rocking sideways and front to backbr- self-cutting with an knife (very effective btw)br- repetitve use of expletive language ( similar to tourette)br- sniffing and smelling at virtually anythingbrQuite a catalogue No wonder people find me a bit odd!
Comment from : @Ludwig1954

@mamat1213
My fave stims are hand wringing and playing with bead bracelets I have to wear one daily so I can fidget with it didn’t know it was stimming 😂
Comment from : @mamat1213

@ocayaro
This is misleading because oof the “textbook illness syndrome” Look up “medical student syndrome” People tend to start thinking they have the symptoms of the illness they are reading about It’s a form of confirmation bias Please leave diagnosis to a trained professional
Comment from : @ocayaro

@Captain_Zero_
While these kids are young it is "easy" to dictate their lifestyles around their mental problems What happens to a child with autism when they become an adult The world definitely has less patience with an adult with mental problems I speak from a position of my mother suffered from mental problems for all of her life and spent many years in and out of mental facilities My son displayed many autistic tendencies when he was young and was diagnosed with Asperger's I understand the times are different now, but when I was young it was nothing to see adults living in assisted care living facilities Some of these places were pretty bad I worry for my son who is now an adult and for people worse than him and wonder why has there been an increase in autism
Comment from : @Captain_Zero_

@ANNY40026
Those are all things my sons dose he is non verbal has autism ❤
Comment from : @ANNY40026

@theoceandragonfly
I know it's called stemmingbrbrI would call it energy releasing because all that movement release built up energy in their body, and cognitive stimulation because movement helps them adjust to over stimulation of noises and what they are seeing Just my thoughts As long as they are safe and happy and not hurting themselves or others, it's all good
Comment from : @theoceandragonfly

@teresag2015
Since having covid19, I cover whichever ear the ambulance or fire truck is passing on I cannot regulate my ear noise level anymore brbrI miss my pipes/singing (7 to 9 levels, the most you can get) Listening to others singing, hurts me, because I struggle getting mine back AGT and other shows, BGT The Voiceetc
Comment from : @teresag2015

@ScottK-wv4om
What load of BS!I truly feel bad for everyone believing your nonsense! Based on your delusional imagination I bet you think restless leg syndrome is considered autistic stimming
Comment from : @ScottK-wv4om

@sventer198
Bouncing my leg
Comment from : @sventer198

@user-vt7sg6ou5p
My favorite stim is chewing as well :)
Comment from : @user-vt7sg6ou5p

@casmartin790
Thank you for opening your home and family to us and allowing us to learn from and about you This has really educated me and you seem like a wonderful mother and father ❤
Comment from : @casmartin790

@sage5530
i really dislike the terms level one and level three autism, your kids could completely swap levels eventually autism can be extremely high support needs but it cannot be different levels what many people think of low functioning autism is often a combination of down syndrome and autism if not, its just autism and theres no severity level you arent in ther bodies and your level one autistic kid is just as autistic as your level three autistic kid
Comment from : @sage5530

@edups88
So just doing anything at all is stimming? Got it He still chews his shirt cause he was never told to stop He likes throwing things cause he’s a kid He likes playing with your hair just like any kid does He likes to hold things because he’s curious
Comment from : @edups88

@Slomozau
Omg, I’m pretty sure my nephew has autism and a lot of family members have been noticing that he’s different Have been telling his parents to check him but they didn’t care enough and said he’s ok, only now they realized he’s not developing like other kids and started taking some action to help him 😢
Comment from : @Slomozau

@AnnaCatherineB
It might be really nice for your son who likes hair to be able to have long hair to play with, although i can tell you like how sweet he is with you
Comment from : @AnnaCatherineB

@user-et4fr9tl6t
Stretching is not "stimming"

@micheledavis3735
I type everything I sayeverything Just with my handsnot on a keyboard I feel crazy, but I am fast, and my family is used to itI also shake my hands and/or wiggle my fingers while I'm doing most everything I've never thought about why beforeit just is what I've always done When I was little, my dad would make meditation on my hands and it devastated me He didn't know better and I could not quit
Comment from : @micheledavis3735

@christinehowansky7160
My daughter is high functioning and one of her main stems is drawing She's really good at it too

I’m 33 and crying at the thought of my family being as understanding as this mother
Comment from : @mblurry2205

@jessielynncharboneau4780
I’m not diagnosed but my boys are :) my favorite stim is to pace, count every tile on the ceiling, floor, and window I do a lot of “petting” soft fabrics I have to touch everything, it helps me feel calm bc it gives my mind something to think about other than I how am feeling at the moment My oldest boy used to touch my ear lobes all the time! My youngest boy needs to squeeze or he squeezed and have pressure on his body in order to feel safe and calm He now does jujitsu My oldest boy does repetitive motions with his hands when he’s thinking, he now makes music with them to help his emotions :) ❤
Comment from : @jessielynncharboneau4780

@BosisofSweden
There is nothing like swinging your legs When I am in physical pain I rock gently from the waist and up

@chapachuu
I’ve always played with my hair When I was young, I used to play with my mom’s hair at bedtime because it helped soothe me
Comment from : @chapachuu

@stephie7926
You literally just described 5 boys in my PreK classroom I have been at a loss on what to do because they just throw toys, run in the room, chew on the toys and all the materials I had been describing their behavior as hyper aggressive but now I believe they’re stemming One even will lick the walls I have two though in particular that will also destroy the other students journals and our other materials impulsively while laughing These two though will also impulsively start attacking the other students-pulling their hair, their shirts, sitting on them, and when upset they will quickly throw a chair Do you have any suggestions for me?
Comment from : @stephie7926

@DoveLove
When I was a child, never knew anyone with autis insane how almost every kid has it now
Comment from : @DoveLove

@belle9438
My 7 yr old grandson will take your hand and rub it across his face I always thought it was a way to show love I still think so He is 7 and non verbal, though he is learning I always stim I'm not austic I shake my foot, roll small pieces of paper like gum wrappers between my fingers, twirl my hair Twirl my husband's and dog's hair My hands have to be busy I didn't know it was considered stimming I bet gum chewing could be considered stimming as well I learned something new today Thank you for the informative video
Comment from : @belle9438

@georgianaaron4986
My one year old does some of this I really hope she outgrows it and it doesn't turn out to be autism It's not easy raising kids with these challenges
Comment from : @georgianaaron4986

@joshjackson6420

Comment from : @ldouglas4727

@amnazaid7952
So informative at which age your son started speaking ?
Comment from : @amnazaid7952

@noahsbasketballhighlights1882
My autism is very mild However, I did use some of the stims that you mentioned? This video reminded me of when I would run to past the Christmas tree and back I used to chew things too, and I still do it sometimes I also flap my hands when I get excited or anxious Is head shaking or twitching a stim? I’ve been doing that a lot lately?
Comment from : @noahsbasketballhighlights1882

@tracymoore9044
My stems included pressing on my eyes over and over Humming to myself as I covered and uncovered my ears Flapping and rocking Twisting side to side and biting the inside of my cheek and mouth
Comment from : @tracymoore9044

@thomasschoeck9080
I also did head shaking like what Ezra does in this video From what my parents say my sister also did that when she was younger
Comment from : @thomasschoeck9080

@thomasschoeck9080
Autism Family also mentions chewing in some of their stimming videos They also mention chew toys for this including one that looks like a Lego
Comment from : @thomasschoeck9080

@thomasschoeck9080
I did some head banging until I was at least four years old (if not five) In the end I eventually grew out of it I guess this is a fairly common stim even in people who are level two like I most likely was when I was younger
Comment from : @thomasschoeck9080

@thomasschoeck9080
One person in my family thinks that stretching under almost any circumstances is rude because it is an expression of boredom
Comment from : @thomasschoeck9080

@thomasschoeck9080
One person in my family thinks that tapping a pen (even very lightly) is inherently destructive because it might damage the surface that is being tapped especially if the surface is made of either wood or plastic brbrAnother person in my family who is probably neurotypical (but has never been tested for autism) does that stim
Comment from : @thomasschoeck9080

@mig2cool982
I make noises and faces in private I contain it whenever in public but I love stimming in this sense whenever no one looks
Comment from : @mig2cool982

@shannonrosewiley
When I was a kid and school age my school did not allow me or other students with atusim or adhd to stim, so gald view about it have changes
Comment from : @shannonrosewiley

@LiamJW33
Im 33 I often put my hand around my chin/beard almost like the thinking man statue when im speaking to people Especially face to face Makes me feel more comfortable when the conversation and having to think extra hard what to say next is making me uncomfortable
