I dont like the title trope:brEG - The i__/i of i__/i i__/i Comment from : SVD D |

You've hit every nail on the head with this video, in my opinion I especially agree with your comments about narratives that have no fantasy drive behind them Also your comments on lazy world building and/or relying on stereotypical "fantasy" elements without any kind of attempt at originality or creativity Comment from : Amanda |
"Foreign Influence, a problem"? Are you excluding anything not written originally in English? Or just ignoring the greatest minds of Fantasy most of which are/were British Comment from : Marls Berlin |
Hey it's Mr The shark from the hit webseries "Isekai DND" Comment from : Lord sandcrab |
You bhave to/b read PACT and PALE by Wildbow, it’s balmost/b exactly what you want (it isn’t high fantasy it’s urban fantasy) Literally has to be some of the best modern fantasy series’ Comment from : No time for creative names just for games |
I love the new creative settings and ideas coming out but I do really care about quality of writing I struggle to find fantasy books I can ready past 50 pages even when I love the concept these days Comment from : Sir SchmittyX |
is one of those trends dividing the POV between like 10 people and switching back and forth because that shit drives me INSANE Comment from : none |

Three years late to the party, but thank you It reflects what I feel about fantasy as a genre I am working on my own setting and story for ages by now and maybe it never sees the light of day in the end, but it is encouraging, that you and others in the comments see it the same way It is a reflection of what I am working on, and hopefully I can, one day, deliver something worthwile Comment from : Doppelkammertoaster |
3o years ago Ed Greenwood lowered all the bars to the lowest achievible :) Comment from : Çağlar Deniz Ata |
Lowered Bar: As a Royal Road reader & writer: Oh goodness yes More chaff than wheat But they are generally rated low pretty fast, and don't see anysort of further publishing It takes decent ratings to get picked up by Amazon or such Comment from : Zags Foster Kittens |
What if it's not just self publishing, but also a reflection of the change in people in our modern internet era? Maybe people filter through so much available information nowadays that they generally look more favorably at simpler writing? Why read words you can only find in old dictionaries when all you care about is the story? There's only so many paragraphs of description of Paul Atreides trippin balls on visions of the future i can stand before i start to get bored and want the story to hurry along with the next event alreadybrbrWhat is the point of fantasy races if quite often they're just humans exaggerated in some specific way? It's only there to push forward some simple idea or even moral lesson the author has set their minds on Things easily done with humans Why do all that if you can just write in humans and they'll be more balanced and interesting anyway? Most of the time fantasy races are just simplified humans, and that detracts from them being interesting and nuanced For example Ogier in WoT - they're simply more pleasant humans You generally know what to expect from ogier, and any other human in place of Loial and you would probably have to watch yourself and question his motives (because you'd suspect a human who would have a pure and innocent motivation, or stated motivation anyway, and look for suspicious behaviors, or secret agendas or other allegiances) It doubly sucks if a fantasy race is just better than humans in many ways - that's just fanfic writingbrbrI know that fantasy equals weird and wacky races, orcs, trolls, etc, but rarely have I seen them written as MORE than just 'quirky humans' But, I have not read much fantasy literature, so maybe I'm wrong on the fantasy races thing Comment from : uuamenator |
I am so glad he said something about races because that's what I've spent most of my time on as well as world building I think I'll be safe?!🎉 Be prepared to have your world rocked!!!😊🎉🎉 Comment from : Luna Blue |
Give it another few years or a decade The door is open, some have to prepare a universe before they walk through Comment from : jochem kalthof |
y a w n Comment from : Kenneth Krueger |
I agree that it’s not as common as it used to be but, The Wandering Inn is a massive exception to the lack of new races with histories cultures and backgrounds if your looking for it… Comment from : Shout In the Wind |
I’m so tired of abusive relationships being normalised and romanticised especially in fantasy It seems like every book relationship, even many friendships, are not considered how non-fic one’s are and nuance just disappears and toxic tropes are expected Comment from : OmnipotentFaces |
the lowered bar in prose!!! i agree and because i listen to audiobooks, it's even worse hearing someone read the lines out loud Comment from : OnlyCats |
The lowered bar is so so so true omfg, the amount of books that have Fae in them is so tiring Comment from : ArtisticBean |
If you’re going to use established fantasy races, I think it’s a good idea to make big changes to them to make them more stand out Sure you can have troublesome goblins and elegant elves but what are you doing to make them special in your setting? Comment from : Silver Bullet |
I love Mistborn though Comment from : Raine Storm |
All of this is part of why I stopped reading when I hit YA level None of it was interesting anymore Comment from : DragonQueen |
Talking about fantasy creatures, I am hungry for some monsters with actual society that does not circle around eating people, raiding villages, and kidnapping womenbrbrAnd I don't mean your typical goblins and orcs I mean rare monsters like the Naga, the Lamia, the Drivers, and other niche monster charactersbrbrI know that they are hard to market because of their off-putting appearances but it would make for such an interesting twist to the usual fantasy genrebrbrOne of my ideas was pairing an elf with a vampire becausewell, they both live for a long time but while one preserve life, the other stuck with the dead Comment from : inbetween 1-0 |
wEll acTUaLly!… Comment from : Harry Potter |
As somebody who grew up reading Epic Fantasy and Epic Sci-Fi I cannot stand modern fantasy It's boring to me Comment from : Kirel Red |
Agreed Comment from : Joshua Caulfield |
I thought I had a low attention span but I watched a video about some random man I've never seen or heard before rant about fantasy genre and was fully entertained throughout the entirety of it :0 Comment from : Orpezo |
I really HATE litrpg that has to start with “bob is an accountant who woke up with a dragon licking his foot” it’s such a stupid premise… some of these stories are great and interesting but ruined by childish references to things like “ I’d love love a pepsi but I’ll settle for dwarf beer …”seriously wtf, grow up Comment from : Boredy McBoredface |
my biggest issue with fantasy, is how 90 of shifter/werwolves and such all seem to have gone to romance, I will still read, but it's nice when I get a good non romance book, Comment from : wolf wing |
If you want different races, give sci-fi a spin I'm new to this channel, so I don't know how broad of a defintion of "fantasy" you usually work with Alistair Reynolds and Adrian Tchaikovsky in particular have some very fleshed-out and bizarre non-human civilizations Comment from : Dan Hillenburg |
Fantasy races are interesting I wrote a fantasy book last year and I wanted to use the traditional races as they are a great shorthand which people "just get" But do a bit of a twist to them Comment from : Meike Torkelson |
The only things that have made me outright drop a book are inconsistent characterization and poor pacing I've read all kinds of books, but these are the ones that kill a story for me Comment from : Ashurean |
My name is Daniel green too Comment from : Dani Green |
I can't help but laugh at the subtle insults aimed at fan fiction here, when some of the best prose I have ever read comes from fan fiction Comment from : Jenni |
nahbrimma do my own thing Comment from : Autistic Rap Battles |
I think I'm more with Hemingway, bigger words don't make bigger emotions Comment from : Coyote Sage |
Self-publishing democratises the writing process A lower standard of writing is an inevitablity Comment from : nevarmaor |
Modern writing is crap Agree with that Comment from : Mark Gouthro |
I disagree about the fantasy races brbrI think that more "down to earth" fantasy, dark and gritty, and lower fantasy are just more enjoyable than high fantasy with elves, orcs etc Comment from : TheMuffinBagare |
Yeah, unfortunately there were a lot of 'fantasy' books that are combining the sins mentioned Poor writing style, the fantastic is treated as a setting and so on Sometimes u feel as if the authors are just too lazy to write a historical novel or too dumb, so they put elves in there Now they can just say my world, my rules and not study anything 😅 Comment from : Elisaveta Shikhova |
As a writer, I find this kind of video very useful, thanks for the input! Comment from : Avire Studios |
All the eight volumes of Mahabharata has been nicely written by Ramesh Menon from the original text of Ved Vyas Ramesh Menon has translated the original text of Vedas Vyas into English making it simple for readers Start reading Mahabharata from the first volume by Ramesh Menon Simple English, faithful translation! Comment from : Kalaakaar |
You have earned my respect Not because of any particular thing you said, though you made some good points, but mostly just because you showed The Way of Kings on screen, and I respect anyone who has read that Comment from : WorldWeaver |
I think the issue with the lack of modern high fantasy is that Tolkien wasnt trying to write a high fantasy when he created it He drew from the heroic epic tradition and wrote it in the prose of a pre-modernist If fantasy just aims at being fantasy it wont develop but just develop another replica of itself Comment from : Tom Gay |
I am 2 years late, but something I've noticed (which may or may not be a trend) is writers pigeonholkng themselves into writing certain character types and tropes based on region For example, in India, people pigeonhole themselves in the tropes establiahed by the two great epics and that's it Pretty sure i can say the same for other regions too Comment from : Mahi Mahi |
My brother in christ did you just say the stormlight archive is tolkish? Comment from : Xen N |
What's kinda funny to me is that my fantasies do tend to lean towards more classical literature prose and a lot of the times, it's a sticking point for readers Comment from : Bree M Lew |
40k Rules Comment from : Seth Kalina |
Gatekeepers will continue to control what they think will sell or they will actually do work & figure out what sells, relent & expand their tastes Otherwise the dude who starts up his own brewhouse will take the market share from Budwieser, Miller & Coors 😂 Comment from : Steve C |
I was never into fantasy, because I am more into dystopian fiction, like "1984" and "Fahrenheit 451" It's just that interesting Comment from : [Angel Regel] |
I definitely dropped other species in my writing because it just was not helpful to my work Same for dragons I just couldnt find any reason for them in my story It just didnt build on the core of the story Comment from : JasonWolf |
Tried reading Star Wars: Aftermath from the new canon Couldnt get past the first chapter Writing was waaay to choppy Comment from : Cacey Montgomery |
I’ve been writing on and off for years I have 13 half written books rn lol I’ve done so much world building in one universe based on Norse mythology, designing each realm and making my own tweaks to all the races and even working on my own custom race Comment from : Silent Stormur |
I recommend beyonders, most undertalked fantasy series in the world Mull's world is so original imo And i really believe beyinders deserve a screen adaptation Comment from : Mr Grigg |
I'll think for a while about building a world with elves who can turn into dragons It's such a strong genre, and I love the intrigue of having literal dragons in the council, some known, some not Comment from : DawnEos |
Big brained "You can't win if you aren't even on the correct ball park" Comment from : DawnEos |
I recall you saying that you were a software engineer I'm curious whether you think that it would have been better if you had studied English lit or something related to books brbrI'm in the process of choosing majors so it would be really helpful to know❤ Comment from : CreativaDiva |
“Just smoother,” You mean Tolkien You know you can write your own book It’s easy You just open up the computer and bleed Comment from : Llamas & Budgets |
Self-publishing oversaturated the market with cookie-cutter-stories and destroyed the benchmark for quality wrinting This video speaks from my heart Not enough originality and real creativity out there these days Comment from : Clayfinity |
Your rainbow watchband tells me everything Comment from : Julius Spartacus |
Are dwarves high fantasy just wondering? Comment from : Zachary Talmage |
Fantasy is repetitive and boring bc everybody is writing it Comment from : PianoMan 2018 |
ughbrThe desire to actually start writing a fantasy setting i have cooped up in my mind for years is overwhelming me, but at the same time im terrified of starting something that won't succeed That I still need time to become better at writing, and locking down the story of what exactly I want to tell in this enormous fucking universe across a vast timeline of events It pains me because I want to have it be original to me That is to say; I have intentionally limited my search for fantasy novels, movies, and etc because I want the ideas I create to have originated from me, and me alone Yet as I am made aware of some things just by the collective culture of the internet bleeding into my mind, I am horrified to find the things that I have thought of are almost identical to those works which were created YEARS before I ever had the chance to dream :/brbrUltimately I am left with a hollow feeling staring down a forked path One which leads to a quick, mediocre rush to create this story The other, I will never get to take these ideas out of my mind and onto paper before I am dead Comment from : Aimless Savant |
I'm reading this book and it literally is always like, "his amber eyes" it's a fantasy romance and it's like- I get it it's amber Comment from : just her |
Very good video! You bring up very good points I don't have the 'literary eloquence' to write high fantasy I'm competent, grammatically speaking, but I'm a bit earthy in my prose My modern fantasy leans more towards diesel punk I love fantasy creatures, magic, and swordplay, but I also love motorcycles, tanks, and automobiles What I'm writing now combines those elements Comment from : William Schwartz |
I miss the use of various high fantasy races It feels more human centric stories Nothing wrong with it, but still I do miss the use of various different races Comment from : Starflare the Wizard |
11:30 I hear so many writers say "make it character driven It has to be character driven Worldbuilding is secondary" And i'm like bro the fantasy aspect an the world is almost just as important to those books 😭 And I always think of Tolkien and how his balance of everything and detail was ALL important Yes a story being more about characters than plot and world is a basic pointer, since the story is mostly about the character, but this is making me think people are sometimes taking it to seriously and missing out on the fantastical aspect Comment from : Sky Dreamer |
“I’m not a snob” lmao this guy is insufferable stopped at 4:08 Comment from : Sarah Grundy |
I think one of the reasons we see so much low fantasy is because people just want to put out books one after another; speed written brMeanwhile the fantasy world I've been working on may only have humans and elves but I've been working on the world itself for over two years now; slowing me down on the actual story (The lore needed to be built; and histories for many of the kingdoms within my fantasy world) brRich lore was what drove me to fantasy in the first place and now I find it all so lackluster Comment from : Katka |
i love urban fantasy but it usually takes place in a recognizable version of our world and that means you usually have some kind of masquerade, but the masquerade doesn't work if you have extremely powerful creatures running around ; i became super aware of this while i was rereading the Wicked Lovely series and it got me thinking that if a story is gonna be set in "our world" but with these extremely powerful beings, it should be alternate history rather than masquerade driven and if it's not set in our world, it can be set in a secondary world and there's no need for a masquerade at all - that led me to dive into Will Wight's Cradle series, which has reignited my appreciation for "otherworld fantasy" one thing i enjoy about modern fantasy is that i'm getting to experience worlds like Orisha from Children of Blood and Bone, so i'm not stuck in fantasy counterpart Europe as often * Comment from : Niko Black |
I have around 150k words of a fantasy novel that has taken a few years to write, it has a few of the expected fantasy races but also quite a few completely original races It's pretty cool to think that they only exist in my mindbr I'm afraid that if I publish this story no one will want to read about this universe because it has relatively new races and people won't care for it because it isn't what they expect fantasy to be Comment from : Griffin Reader |
I'm fucking sick of elves who are oppressed / persecuted or live mundane lives in some boring human city They are not elves, they're just pointy eared, extremely obvious allegories Comment from : Akechi Mitsuhide |
I just get tired of the villain being redeemable and willing to redeem himself or falling for the main characterbrThat and woke nonsense Comment from : Djoke Altena |
i write schizophrenic fantasybr(a taste)brbri have an idea it is wonderful to believe in such fascinations to think that the wonders of existence is held to a standard of a real calculation and morality is a fantasy i style my time in a way that resembles the ability to wander about the likelihood of failing and to think i am punished for not crying over failure and i do not celebrate sucess reasons forgotten in my time are translated into new definitions such words that speaks the wisdom of today as i try to include i falter and exclude myself of this be it as it may i may we all may not try why try when trying leads to discrimination from the sides divided you into these groups are you going to succeed or are you going to fail? i failed a too many time a many of too i have yet to cry in defeat as i do not feel the burn will you physically burn i Comment from : DEFECTiVE |
I tryv not to play to the crowd, Im just telling the stry thats inside my mind Comment from : wyatt Leske |
I honestly don't like modern fantasy, I actually prefer more traditional fantasy styles, not as rules per day but as general guide lines for inexperienced writers brI've noticed that in recent years anyone can button mash a type writer and publish it and have a book Just cause it's a book doesn't make it good What I love about Tolkien writing is the style per day but how much heart, love, and care and blood sweat and tears he poured into the work Modern fantasy just seems to want to take a political dump on everything Idk, I want a cool fantasy story, I don't want to think about racial issues, I want a fun adventure I want some genuine quality in the story I love it when a fantasy story has a classic fantasy touch This doesn't mean you cant be creative or try something new I'm saying the traditional styles should be guidelines and you can absolutely try new things But please try to pour some quality in to your stories and leave the politics at home, no thank you, all I need to hear politics is turn on the TV I don't need help learning politics Comment from : Professor Sassafras |
I was sort of feeling the opposite? That modern fantasy is getting forgettable because everyone is throwing everything into their kitchen-sink dnd/tolkien western fantasy, and because we're all drawing from the same "everything" its all turning into a sort of generic blob Comment from : RafunLi |
so many water but agree with last part about fantasy plot Comment from : RoundCat98 |
So you actually read YA? I don't actually look those up, it's more of a coincidence for me But Maria Snyder's Inside Out/Outside In novels were very good even for an old grump like me who can't stand YA novels Ofc, why do I even bother mentioning that to someone who likes the even more silly and confusing books, not to say boring (The Circus thing) of the Wheel of Time? Oh, shoot me! Comment from : Lev Vellene |
does a weasel with a gun count as fantasy? Comment from : Miha Leben |
"there's a character whose a wizard" and he's like, there Now it's fantasy! XD Comment from : Preben |

Why are dragons all the rage now in modern fantasy? 🐉brWhat kind of dragons stories have been written thus far? Pray tell 🙏 Comment from : Pendragon 090 |

Modern fantasy has a lot of the same problems that its always had If it ain't Tolkien wank, chances are it'll get ignored or bashed; Too many golden high elves; too many damn Dragons Comment from : Ivey Yewitt |
