The beasts quote, "The Broken are the more evolved" is so moving bececause it is pain and suffering that has shaped the strongest characters in the film Casey, who has suffered from years of abuse, has learned to survive and fight back due to her brokenness and pain The Beast, the most relentless and unstoppable personality, is fueled by the memories of the past and he uses his hatred as fuel to make himself incredibly strong Shamalyan really effectively conveyed the theme of overcoming one's demons by standing firm and facing them, even if it means confronting the experiences that caused one's brokenness

The flaw in the beasts belief appears to be the physical he only stopped attacking Casey because he saw her scars she could not have had them and still be "broken" but he wouldn't have been able to tell so he could kill someone he would deem pure without knowing because they would be broken on the inside and still have no physical trauma to show it
