I love Jeremy Brett‘s Interpretation of Sherlock Holmes but the mannerisms and character of Basil Rathbone is also very close to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s description of SH

I’ve always considered Basil Rathbone the definitive Sherlock,he hits all the beats of the book,even when the timeline of the films stopped following the timelines of the books,in my opinion,this character is best portrayed by him,the chain smoking,hook nosed,intelligent and witty detective we all know and love

This is how i see it regarding who is Holmes: anyone is, it only takes some one to analyse and reason events in order to imitate Holmes’ methods However, in terms of Screenplay and cinematography, I’d say it’s RDJ, just for historical accuracies, for classic victorian theatrical Holmes it’d be Jeremy Brett, for Modern Theatrical Holmes of course Benedict Cumberbatch Damn, you can go deeper and say your favourite audiobook narrator of the short stories might resemble your favourite style of Sherlock Holmes (Magpie Audio/ Greg Wagland Springs to mind) it’s something akin too James Bond, everyone has their own preference, however, unlike James Bond, anyone can become A Holmesian type character

Basil rathbone had such an influence on writers post 1940/50s that a lot of media references Holmes by referencing rathbone Disney’s Basil of Baker Street is an obvious reference but the character of ratty in Disney’s Mr Toad is dressed to resemble Rathbones Holmes (as Rathbone was the narrator)
