The kickstarter is already here There is no practical, economic reason for putting people into space We are a massive liability up there, frail meatbags hogging resources Nothing useful gets done until it can be automated The reason to go is because you want to They will be pilgrims, whether ideological (Musk's "make life multi planetary") religious, or nationalist (colony for prestige, refuge or 'high ground') Musk has already started on that path, just building the reusable launcher for his pilgrim project prompted the creation of a constellation of satellites for his starlink Once the pilgrims are up there, they will need things, and it will all roll from there

In 4th grade, they made us read this stupid book called something like "Reality TV: 2089" It had a distopian future with a "second moon for advertizing" I thought it was absurd at the time, but later on I figured out it wasn't that absurd from a technical standpoint, assuming it's a thin sheet (There were other, much more, stupid things in that book, though)

It might be possible to use a skyhook to reduce the costs of space travel allowing for powerstalites and asteroid mining, with the mass from the asteroid being split between raw materials for more power satellites and precious metals being sent back to earth it would be one of the largest undertakings in history but the combination of the two and the fact that one needs more matter to be lifted and the other needs more matter to be lowered means that they could balance each other for use on a medium to large skyhook

In addition to low/zero g for manufacturing, there is also an abundance of ultra high vacuum (obviously since it is space!) which might also be useful Similarly with very cold temperatures I would also think once a process to build a modular container on a moon base or in orbit using asteroid materials, it will be fairly cheap to build reallly big structures Heck if material is cheap, high-g environments could be potentially made by spinning up a moderately size cylinderbrEver consider doing an episode on zero-g/orbital manufacturing lines?

It's really easy to manufacture high precision ball bearings in microgravity You just spray the liquid metal with the desired drop size, and wait for it to cool down Cold welding can be a problem but you can also do it on purpose Telescopes obviously are better, and so are huge structures, like a scaled up version of LIGO, or LHCbrThe problem is it has to become self sufficient pretty quickly, because launch costs are enormous Sending up smaller machines to collect materials and slowly build large versions could be interesting

You cannot ban an advertisement in space cause it's not in any government(international 'waters') so it has to be an international agreement and that would be very difficult if there's incentive

Dr Sorenson said that when they were researching space solar power stations, they created a spreadsheet to see what would make the concept profitable and even reducing launch costs to zero, it still wasn't practical for a market on Earth I think we have to get the first Stanford Torus up there to break the catch 22 simply because that creates a market in space and an infrastructure to build more habitats
