Nearly every one of these marks falls into one of two categories As a historic timber framer we still use a V to mean Roman numeral 5 to label rafters and collars to make up a roof truss That is 100 what the V in the attic is As for the plethora of burn marks it’s clear they were made by a candle holder called a sticking Tom It has a small nail like point that holds the candle to any wooden surface The worst of all being the burn mark in the door “socket” as you call it is nothing more than a convenient place to put a small candle or oil lamp Please do your historic site a favor and research these elements further I’d hate to see your historic site reinforce myths or misconceptions Comment from : matt sanbury |
