Vietnam went the wrong way when it left its professional phase and entered its careerist phase One Army general said "Too many brigade and battaion commanders were simply trying to punch their tickers instead of actually lead" Anthony Herbert wrote "There's nothing like a chestful of ribbons and the old war record when the prnotion board meets"

@WesternOutpostDonVonFilms
"Population centered Counterinsurgency" did not work in Iraq and Afghanistan

@WesternOutpostDonVonFilms
The US military hardly ever lost a battle and it was the civilian leaders that eventually pulled them out Should the blame not rather go to the political leadership?

@halonglvv
With all the minus, the USA and South VN would NOT fail if the politicians know how to control the communist tricks Soviet andChina helped them to the maximum, US helped the SouthVN as a containment war, not as a necessary war Moreover the communistmarxists were strong in all Europe and US cities, their propaganda was excellent, USA was viewed as monsters, and helas intellectuals like Sartre, Chomsky, Russell…hated USA and the capitalist syst There were about 1 mil marxists inside US according to Hoover, quoted by ACoulter How could we win when some ugly actresses came toHanoi to praise the communists ?

@JoeHale-q7u
A CIA report from January 1968 made it clear that North Vietnam had a population of 18 million and adequate manpower reserves to fight a long war Westmoreland must have known this So why did he think a war of attrition would work?
Comment from : @JoeHale-q7u

@gregchijoff9959
Westmoreland, the Herr General, who obfuscated and covered up the My Lai massacre, served the United States military industrial complex and his masters in the CIA All whilst promoting the BS Communist threat domino lie

@JoeFreeman-y2d
Westmoreland was DEFINITELY not well thought of by the Msrine Corp This includes zgeneral zKrulak and zgeneral Lew WaltbrHe had NO understanding of the political aspect of the zviet war but thought he could creste and use a army in the image of the WW2 European arrrmy practicing unlimited war and use it effectively in a totally different environment politically socially geographically etcbrBasically at the end of the day he repeated most of the mistakes of the French
Comment from : @JoeFreeman-y2d

@My2ndtimearound
As time rolled onward through the late 80’s I learned to despise Westmorland and definitely LBJbrThey had no compassion or care for the youths of America Westmorland was darkly ego driven and in it for the stripes and respect with a warped mindset to rule the country with his iron fistbrI lost many friends to his misguided judgment
Comment from : @My2ndtimearound

@craighoover1495
I appreciate this in furtherance of my understanding of the circumstances surrounding my father's career Class of 1950 USMA he served in the Air Force with deployments to Korea and Vietnam Vietnam for a year at about 1970 Dad retired in 1975 I never ascertained his thoughts about this war I know that he liked to fly, loved his wife and family, and had an abiding desire to help other people

Knowing how LONG the Vietcong were able to persist and resist against the French, and their intimate knowledge of the terrain that was being fought on, is a shocking example of his narcissistic and careerist objectives In addition, McNamara had the same personality defects!brbrYou really went easy on him and the administration
Comment from : @Roberta-my7qr

@theodorejay1046
We didn't loose in Vietnam We had no business being there & LBJ knew that early We lost the will to fight a pointless war Unfortunately Bush Jr & Cheney never learned that lesson years later 🙄

Westmorland’s focus on technocratic targets such as body counts would have meshed well with McNamara’s approach, based on his history as a business manager

wake up peeps, it wasn't a war, it was a pacification mission, westmoreland was just a soldier sent there by "wise men" from washington, following orders from washington and had heavy restrictionsbr all he said to media (his lies) was exactly what wise men wanted him to say, act he different he would be immediately replacedbrlbj new everything make no doubt about it, same for jfk and nixonbrlook on any captured vc or nva troops - zombies, god knows what uncle ho pumped in them, they all were on suicide mission all 30 years of conflict, you can't pacify a horde of zombiesbrto win there north vietnam had to be nuked and it's not westmoreland's fault it didn't happen

Harold Johnson was a remarkable officer He was captured in the Philippines in 1942 and overcame three years in captivity to continue in the Army, provided excellent service in Korea, and rose to USACOS

@LJK77777
Our getting involved in Vietnam in the first instance was our "STUPID" mistake just like succession was the fundamental mistake of the Confederate south Of course we typically snowballed our mistakes from there And Westmoreland applied his "military intelligence" (an obvious oxymoron) We all rightly consider Vietnam one of several genocidal wars we wrongly engaged For all our military superiority we got beat by kids on bicycles who were however fighting for their country!!! Only a black scar ribbon is deserved
Comment from : @LJK77777

@omegapointil5741

Sickening Peter Principle at work LBJ was another of our many failed leaders, just like Truman, who wouldn’t allow MacArthur to win the Korean War (read his memoir) This talk peters out with resignation instead of indignation LBJ probably recognized in Westmoreland a kindred spirit I served in Vietnam between OCT 69 - AUG 71 with Hq, 4th PSYOP GROUP, US ARMY, VIETNAM
Comment from : @jmwSeattle

@nickf7524
Westmoreland or Eastlessland?
Comment from : @nickf7524

@terminusest5902
It was US politicians that made the policies that lost the Vietnam war Westmoreland was the man who enforced those policies in Vietnam He was willing to follow directions from the politicians Had US politicians really wanted to win the war they could have found a better leader for the forces in Vietnam The war was lost because the US forces could not invade North Vietnam and stop the supply of men and weapons from the North Invading North Vietnam would have risked war with China As happened in Korea China would not accept US bases on its border
Comment from : @terminusest5902

@davidmatthews4217

the us couldn't win the vietnam war no matter who was in charge or what strategy was employedand the intelligence services knew it early on it's fair to call out the leaders who failed miserably, but this was an unwinnable war

@thetombaxter
If the US military was unleashed we could have killed 90 of the Vietnamese as opposed to the mere 15 We could have dropped a 100 megatons of bombs instead of the pityingly small 10 megatons We were only allowed to destroy 10 of Vietnam's farmland, if only we had destroyed 90 we could have had total victory as we did against the Seminoles and so many other savage terrorists in fulfillment of our Manifest Destiny

Comment from : @johnries5593

The exchange with Sen Hollings (admittedly a savvy politician) does demonstrate how politically clueless Westmoreland was But certainly LBJ was a smart enough politician that he ought to have known that Westmoreland was a political liability

"Westmoreland" was an  "empty suit"!!!  As a Marine there during the "Tet" offensive 1968, any of our front line NCO"s could have formulated better tactics!!! He was never a leader and failed to gain our confidence, if anything he was  distant and aloof, seemed more a bureaucrat for cut and run "Johnson", I would never want him as a platoon sergeant!!!!!

@TheDavidlloydjones
Famous sub rosa story in Washington When Ed Applewhite was a comptroller of the CIA in the mid-sixties, his main job was giving MacNamara his daily briefing on "the numbers" that MacNamara had thought from his Ford days were the foundation for everything At one point Ed famously asked "Sir, may I make a personal comment?"br"Hunh, Yunh? Gmph" or equivalent puzzled assent from Macnamarabr"Well, sir, I don't think those numbers mean what they seem to mean"brThat was Ed's last day of briefing Macnamarabr(Applewhite went on to other, distinguished, careers of service, on some occasions displaying extreme personal bravery A magnificent man, and a good friend Serving his country well, even in retirement, right up to 2004, the last time I saw him)

@anthonybrownhovelt
What a devastating critique! Wow, no prisoners taken here! One gets the feeling Mr Sorely had a personal grudge against Westmoreland, presumably due to his own experiences in the war and I dare say over the loss of friends and colleagues who he probably felt died because of the Military and Political incompetence of those who should have known better; and for what? Not a great deal of thought given to the implication of Truman's doctrine and how to implement it as a political answer to Communism Rather a gung ho policy approach of military attrition which would have been at home in WW1!
Comment from : @anthonybrownhovelt

@absolutedevelopment1740
This video and all the comments and all the veterans who fough the war amazingly miss the point after all these years The vietnam war was a war that was planned to last 10 years and 57000 dead Those estimates were made in the late 50s Ho ch min was given his weapons by the USA in 1945 This was a war they(cia) were cooking for more than 15 years They needed and wanted the war dollars 600 billion in 60s dollars Trillions today Killed kennedy to make sure usa went to war Westmorelands failures ar meaningless No matter who was commander there was gonna be a 10 year war They handcuffed the military on purpose
