@davidcampbell3858
Dr Alloway's speech is a refreshing perspective on the impact of social media in our lives Her insightful exploration of how personalized technology can actually enhance our memory and deepen our connections with others is not only thought-provoking but also a breath of fresh air in a world often quick to criticize these platforms It's a reminder that technology, when harnessed mindfully, has the potential to enrich our experiences and relationships Her credentials and awards speak to her expertise in the field, making her talk both informative and inspiring

@rebecacasillas6812
It is interesting to see that although people believe social media has negative effects, there are researchers like Dr Alloway that will provide evidence to defy these beliefs Thanks to her studies, we can decide how to use technology and social media in positive ways to, rather than hinder our mental health, enhance our memory and become more empathetic Thank you for your research and advice Dr Alloway!

@user-lp4oy1wt6y
Social media's presence in our lives is often perceived to be a negative impact on how we live throughout our daily lives Given that this TEDTalk was presented 6 years ago, social media and technology as expanded exponentially in the short amount of time I appreciated that Dr Alloway touches on how social media can increase one's level of empathy I think what is currently going on in our world adds to that argument, given that currently my social media is being flooded with posts and messages following the terrorism in Israel Comments of sorrow and advocacy for the victims are filling up my social media's explore pages I always enjoy Dr Alloway's perspectives and loved the way she approached this infamous topic
Comment from : @user-lp4oy1wt6y

@taylafindlay
I really enjoyed watching this Ted Talk! It gave me a new perspective on how I look at social media I am very pleased with the results of Dr Alloway's research, because social media plays such a significant part in many people's day to day lives It is wonderful to hear the positive effects it can have

@kelsiemangar
Dr Tracy Alloway brings up several great points in her Ted Talk This first is in stating that online connections can be just as meaningful as face-to-face connections Social media has and always will be a gateway for communication and connection It also serves as an outlet which we used to share updates about our lives, like Dr, Alloway mentioned Through continuous exposure to others, points of view and other aspects of their lives we eventually develop a feeling of empathy towards them These channels and constant interaction and engagement are also very stimulating to its users We are always inputting, interpreting, analyzing and putting out information
Comment from : @kelsiemangar

@sophiawillingham9918
I really agree with Dr Alloway that social media can help with working memory because of the constant flow of information we see everyday Regardless of people saying that social media is the ruin to our society, it really depends on your perspective!
Comment from : @sophiawillingham9918

@kirstenvictorian21
There are advantages and disadvantages with any type of service/ media so it is important to be informed and have discernment to better maneuver situations I personally have had plenty of positive experiences using social media It was a way for me to connect to others , share my passions, be informed about topics and events that were happening, and boost my mood when times were rough In part because I took precautions like not revealing a lot of personal information to people I did not know, privating my account, and setting healthy boundaries regarding communication I have not seen a lot of positive arguments ( that were not scammy sounding advertisements) compared to negative I appreciate this postive perspective well researched arguement Given that this Ted Tak came out in 2016 and it is now 2023, does this arguement still hold true with popular social media apps like Tiktok and app features like shorts and reels?
Comment from : @kirstenvictorian21

@user-fy8rk7nf9n
I like the different approach and view of social media, as most see the negatives effects and impacts, it was refreshing to see a positive perspective We are usually suffocated with information about how bad social media is for mental health, attention, relationships, or anything, so it is good to see the positives to balance out the effects of social media It is also interesting to hear about the positive impacts on memory and influence on floodlight memory At first the idea of social media helping memory did not seem to correlate because of the fast-changing feeds and a surplus of information at once, but after hearing the explanation of spotlight versus floodlight brain it makes more sense that more information can be remembered when more information is being taken in at once
Comment from : @user-fy8rk7nf9n

@ayden098
I feel as if social media has truly gotten a bad reputation throughout the years I think there is some truth to that reputation however, this perspective totally shifted my thought process on social media! I love that there was research to back these findings and how well spoken everything was explained This video was refreshing because social media is a big deal for almost everyone now a-days and it's nice to hear about the positives of social media Overall, very informative video that has changed my thinking!
Comment from : @ayden098

@bellethemapelsyrup
Personally, I've never been a big fan of social media, but I definitely believe that it has plenty of positive impacts, especially when it comes to connecting with people I met the love of my life through an online video game community, so I will always be extremely grateful towards social media for bringing us together Most people who say that social media is destroying our current generation are those who've never taken a moment to think about it, but everyone of course has a right to their own opinion I don't think I've ever heard such a positive attitude regarding social media, until watching this video and Dr Alloway made a lot of good points : p
Comment from : @bellethemapelsyrup

@miahrodriguez510
This view on social media and the effect that it is having on our society is so far from what people assume It makes you think differently and reevaluate your perceptions Social media has certainly changed the way we focus our attention, but not necessarily in a bad way Thinking of it this way is refreshing and gives me hope for the future!
Comment from : @miahrodriguez510

@rachelcross3280
I really enjoyed looking at social media from a new perspective, working memory, and its positive aspects What really captured my attention was how Dr Alloway got there, leading with curiosity and an inquisitive nature To think all research is sparked by a simple question It seems Santa brought more than a bum knee that year
Comment from : @rachelcross3280

@nicoleking7892
Dr Alloway presented a refreshing perspective on this widely discussed topic Talking about misconceptions and keeping the research at the center of the conversation is so important Amazing work!
Comment from : @nicoleking7892

@JEYsANATOMY
Very interesting perspective Dr Alloway! This alternative way of viewing social media is very helpful because it allows us to use social media for more positive interactions With the rise of mental health crisis in America, it is important to challenge our beliefs about social media I certainly held moslty negative beliefs about how we use platforms such as instagram, snapchat, and tik tok After watching this Ted talk, I am no longer saying that social media itself is bad However, it is worth noting that changing how we share those experiences online can lead to more of these positive experiences Thank you!! brbrJacarri Youman
Comment from : @JEYsANATOMY

@victoriamyers650
It was cool to hear about the positive side to social media, since it seems like people usually only want to focus on the negatives I also didn’t expect people who use social media frequently to have a higher working memory than those who don’t Lastly, taking selfies during the speech was a nice touch
Comment from : @victoriamyers650

@drisworld6642
I love how DrAlloway was able to turn social media from a negative into a positive In the world of psychology, social media has so many negative connotations, it was refreshing to hear some positives today! I love the approach that was taken and it was very insightful to hear about working memory and how it benefits us
Comment from : @drisworld6642

@user-re9nd7tc6y
Great job Dr Alloway
Comment from : @user-re9nd7tc6y

@hannahfalconer7792
I love this take on social media! I definitely agree while that it can have downsides at the very heart of it, it was made to help us stay connected with each other
Comment from : @hannahfalconer7792

@orionlightly7966
This is an interesting take on social media that should be talked about more Most of the information you see about social media is about how damaging it is It’s nice to see research and perspective that proves the benefits and advantages that social media provides for our lives
Comment from : @orionlightly7966

@user-wr6oe6nf7r
Social media allows us to remain connected to the world and see what is going on in the lives of others It allows people to have empathy for others and show support Dr Alloway has brought up an aspect of social media that is not discussed often or even considered much when thinking about social media I really enjoyed watching the Tedx Talk
Comment from : @user-wr6oe6nf7r

@Taylorcochrane-ep5zu
Social media is a great way for people to learn and stay connect and Dr Alloway talks about some super great ways to have meaningful relationships throughout social media
Comment from : @Taylorcochrane-ep5zu

@julioreija8052
With a lot of due respect, the working metaphor of the floodlight 🧠 ( 7:54 ) doesn’t seem to respond very well to what has been happening to our ways of thinking and managing our attentionbrbrTo me it looks much more like a stroboscopic light 🧠, this thing we are working with nowadays… 😅
Comment from : @julioreija8052

@druannakight5754
I really appreciate this alternative view to the impacts of ever-increasing social media use by Dr Alloway, especially since I feel like her findings reflect how I interact with social media!
Comment from : @druannakight5754

@dylans7209
This Ted Talk is an inspiring and thought-provoking discussion of the positive impact that social media can have on our lives Alloway challenges us to move beyond our fears of social media and embrace the ways in which it can enrich our relationships, provide new opportunities for connection and personal growth, and even improve our mental health
Comment from : @dylans7209

@DawnStadelmaier
This is a really interesting view on how social media can actually be helpful to us! In the field of psychology, the negative impact social media has on our behavior is so focused on, it's refreshing to hear a different opinion on the subject! It's also very cool to see my professor giving such a great TEDx Talk Great job, Dr Alloway!!
Comment from : @DawnStadelmaier

@SophieSlytherin
Amazing Ted talk, I’m so glad I was given the opportunity and the time to watch this Also Dr Alloway is an amazing professor and helps people understand content in an exciting way and with realbrWorld concepts :))

@iamawesome322
I appreciate how Dr Alloway puts a positive spin on social media! Many times, you hear about the negative effects social media can have After watching this TEDtalk, I feel better about my social media consumption
Comment from : @iamawesome322

@Vontasiac23
This was pretty cool! It’s easier to point out how harmful social media is to us & not the good I typically try to decrease my social media activity because it’s addictive I never noticed how we are able to focus on multiple things & our accuracy on these items! Great Ted Talk!
Comment from : @Vontasiac23

@erinmccloskey5627
I thought this was such an new and different outlook of social media Like Dr Alloway said in her Ted Talk, we as a society have been thought to have become narcissistic and out of touch with the real world It wasn’t until she had conducted research that she found out it’s the exact opposite! She saw that we are actually more empathetic in personal use of social media, (you know the stereotypical head down in their phones typing away), -leaving comments, interacting with friends online I also found it so interesting there are effects on working memory as well! This TedTalk was very informative! I think it’s also information I can take to Thanksgiving dinner when my grandparents ask why my brother, cousin and I are always on our phones! Thank you Dr Alloway! I really enjoy listening to you speak! You’ve done some really fascinating research
Comment from : @erinmccloskey5627

@nickkilpatrick5527
Dr Alloway has a lot of great points Some of the best connections I have today are primarily connected through the online space Especially after Covid most of our entire friendships were handled online with everything shut down, I think that furthered the grip that social media has us in Talking about strangers especially, I use my platform primarily for workout advice and inspiration This has lead me to meet tons of new people, new friends from all around the world, and even get inspiring messages from total strangers about how something I have said or done has resonated with them Without the ability to be so universally connected I don't see how I would ever have had the opportunity to talk to and reach so many new wonderful people!
Comment from : @nickkilpatrick5527

@emilyrice684
This was a great talk by Dr Alloway It is interesting to listen to someone speak about the potential positive impacts social media can have I feel like a lot more attention is given to the negative aspects of social media, so it is interesting to think about the positive impact it can have
Comment from : @emilyrice684

@meggiemartin6623
I love the positive take that Dr Alloway to social media There are many negative connotations about social media so to hear that it improves our working memory is really interesting
Comment from : @meggiemartin6623

@Taylorcochrane-ep5zu
Social media is such a great way for people to stay connected and stay learning new things The approach that DrAlloway talks about social media is great and shows how people can have meaningful relationships through social media
Comment from : @Taylorcochrane-ep5zu

@sydneypell2370
I really loved this video We normally only talk about the bad parts of social media and the perceived harm that it is causing It was really interesting to hear about the positives that social media can have I think it is really important to look at all aspects of an issue to see what are the pros and cons and is this something we really should be worried about Being a part of the "Me Me Me" generation, as it is called, there wasn't much of an option not to have something It is impossible not to be involved in social media is some shape or form because it has become one of the main ways we connect and stay in touch with friends I don't use social media much, but I'll go on it from time to time just to see what my friends are up to and what's going on It was fascinating to learn that by looking at my friends posts and interacting with them I am actually becoming more empathetic and increasing my working memory
Comment from : @sydneypell2370

@justinseagull6813
I really enjoyed this video Dr Alloway has a way of explaining the weight of the material to draw listeners in and capture their attention throughout What an interesting take on social media use in the modern era Not only does it shed light on a new perspective but it reassures the idea that as scientist we must look at both sides of the same coin and dare to do research going against commonality In this case the massive summation of research pointing to the negative effects of social media In my opinion the most fascinating research to learn about are the ones that dare to challenge the status quo Of course, there are still negatives to social media use But research likes this helps use find the pros and cons of our ever so changing technological world I believe that if the knowledge is implemented correctly, it can help lead us towards a more mentally healthy oriented society
Comment from : @justinseagull6813

@gracetaylor8460
I really love this perspective! I get incredibly frustrated when people in older generations, critique my generations use of social media Any time I have personally tried to explain how I am facilitating connections I’ve been shut down, so to know that the research backs up my experience is incredibly validating
Comment from : @gracetaylor8460

@RuthieSmith-yo8in
I really appreciated that not only was social media talked about in a positive light but also that it has the potential to be beneficial to us in our everyday lives This new information goes against what most people are taught and told about social media and is very eye-opening
Comment from : @RuthieSmith-yo8in

@taylorpetryniec9648
It's incredibly refreshing to see someone speaking so highly of the world of social media when our generation is so used to being berated for our social media usage and flooded with only the negative aspects of it There will always be different perspectives both negative and positive but it is good that there are people in the world such as Dr Alloway teaching us to consider the benefits and challenging our approach to social media It's actually an amazing tool that we can utilize it in order to improve our brains!
Comment from : @taylorpetryniec9648

@asima473
I loved this ted talk Tracy Alloway is a professor of mine at UNF and I look forward to every class because I always learn something new or get a better understanding of previous information Watching this video was incredibly informational and eye-opening I have always focused on the negative impacts of social media, but after watching this talk I have now realized how beneficial it can be to our working memory
Comment from : @asima473

@melissahund9457
This was such an informative video The fact that Dr Alloway debunked popular myths about social media with actual research is part of my favorite part about her and her professional career I feel like sometimes we focus too much on the negatives and forget the positives of things, including social media, and it’s refreshing to learn about all the good it does for empathy and society in generalbrGreat work Dr Alloway on this Ted Talk you will always inspire me as a woman in science
Comment from : @melissahund9457

@JTking2
I thoroughly enjoyed Dr Alloway’s presentation I myself am someone who only analyzed the negative effects social media has had on the psyche, and to learn of the duality regarding social media was quite surprising and intriguing Empathy stuck out to me as I have seen many displays of this on TikTok It was also a pleasant surprise to learn that social media has caused higher working memory and better focus/multi-tasking Amazing presentation!
Comment from : @JTking2

@julienthursday3554
Such a refreshing approach to the usage of social media that you supported with further research! I feel many often use social media usage as a scapegoat for perceived negative qualities regarding others without further thinking about potential other reasons people are using social bbmedia— such as to express compassion, rather than self-obsession
Comment from : @julienthursday3554

@IsaacMarquez-wt5kg
Wow!! This really challenged the way I think about social media! It's so easy to point at new things and start making claims about how it's negatively affecting the latest generation The media especially LOVES running stories about the negative effects of x y z on today's youth, but ultimately these sensationalist headlines give way to real scientific research! In the case of social media, I'm glad to hear the effects its having on empathy because it is greatly needed Great talk!!
Comment from : @IsaacMarquez-wt5kg

@heyk-la
This is such a fresh concept when it comes to social media; often, people rant and moan about how social media is turning us digital natives into "snowflakes" or desensitizing us If Dr Alloway's research were to be redone in 2022, I wonder if the results would be the same
Comment from : @heyk-la

@NyLaceaJohnson
Whenever social media is discussed in psychological research, it usually focuses on the negative effects that social media use can have I was surprised to learn that social media use was linked to greater cognitive abilities and improved working memory I found this video to be very interesting and informative
Comment from : @NyLaceaJohnson

@andrewrosal8337
It's nice to hear about a more positive influence that social media has on society today It's not going away anytime soon and it's important that we change our view on it in order to enact positive change It's great to see the positive changes and possibilities for growth that Dr Alloway introduces and can help the younger generations who are born into the social media era cope with using it in a productive manner
Comment from : @andrewrosal8337

@depressedpossum4030
I have always thought that the negative stereotype around social media sounded overplayed, and I'm really happy that Dr Alloway addressed this issue and highlighted the fact that it's actually been scientifically proven to be beneficial It connects us in ways that were once unimaginable and the demonization it goes through just isn't always fair
Comment from : @depressedpossum4030

@ClaireHarvey-qc6fj
I enjoyed watching this Ted Talk as Dr Alloway highlights the positive impacts social media can have on us and our mind Some people feel very strongly that excessive amounts of social media can be detrimental to our mental health, but Dr Alloway provides a variety of reasons how it can be good for us
Comment from : @ClaireHarvey-qc6fj

@sydneylb01
A great perspective on how social media can shape our being Dr Alloway has an amazing way with words and a great outlook on this concept I thoroughly enjoyed this TedTalk from her as she talks about an important aspect in our technological lives And how what is viewed as a negative characterization of young lives is actually beneficial The internet can be just as positive and compassionate as it can be harmful and negative
Comment from : @sydneylb01

@brandons1058
This is a super neat way of analyzing how social media alters the way we think, and I'm definitely going to have to try the last-post memory game that she mentioned in the end I also appreciate the human props in the background - I was wondering how the elephant in the room would be brought up!
Comment from : @brandons1058

@armenaychakour1441
It is imperative that we find the positives in social media as society is becoming more dependent on it Dr Alloway does a fantastic job at illustrating the way social media makes us more empathetic Such a refreshing perspective that gives me more hope for the future
Comment from : @armenaychakour1441

@kaitlynshoemaker2598
Dr Alloway gives a great and unique perspective on social media! Her research does a great deal in proving that social media and the phone can really be a great tool when used the right way I was blown away when she gave the statistic that people were five times LESS likely to miss important information if they used social media more! I love the tips she gives at the end of the video about better ways to use social media to improve our cognition and memory, and I love that she pointed out that empathy is a learned tool that we can use social media to build! I will definitely be using these tips in my everyday social media consumption to see if I notice a difference This was a creative discussion with evidence to back it up and fantastic recommendations at the end Well done!
Comment from : @kaitlynshoemaker2598

@kariscuccia2501
Dr Alloway takes such a fascinating approach in this topic It is such a contrast to what is usually said about social media, and very refreshing and interesting to hear! I never thought social media use could be linked to improved working memory I think social media is a great way to interact with others and with our changing world!
Comment from : @kariscuccia2501

Professor Alloway gives hope for my personal use of social media as well as alleviating many worries I have for my kids using social media As many people mentioned before me social media just like any other tool can be used for doing much good for our fellow humans True to her form Dr Alloway is fun and engaging I just can not believe my luck that I am able to study under such a brilliant academic How humbling and inspiring!!
Comment from : @larissahinman1576

@saramarkowicz
That is a very interesting video I wanted to see for once a positive video about social media But from my own experience and the the ones from my friends, we all agree that our attention isn't better at all when we use social Media It doesn't Help But when we spend more time reading, learning, doing one thing at a time, we are much more focused I am not saying she's wrong because it makes sens but I can't say for sure that I helped me have more empathy neither I have empathy naturally when talking to people but not more thanks to social media even though I related a lot of times to some post I distanced myself a lot from social media and I am certainly better now Social Media can be really good for some things but that will NEVER replace a real face to face conversation
Comment from : @saramarkowicz

@rachelleliban3462
I loved the approach taken by Dr Alloway A lot of the negative aspects of social media are often talked about, and the opposite perspective she had taken while incorporating other aspects into her discussion was nothing but thought-provoking The whole thing was phenomenal and gave me a lot to think about Amazing job!

@madisonseger998
I appreciated the way that Dr Alloway approaches social media, as there is such a misconceptions around the effects of it Many are so quick to criticize social media, never considering the positive things that it has given to society, and I love how well she communicates that
Comment from : @madisonseger998

@darynargo7323
Most of the time when discussions about social media develop, there is a lot of negative brought up (from myself included) and it seems that the main positive perspectives involve the access to information and networking Your discussion brought up aspects I haven’t thought of before, especially about the increased empathy and cognitive functioning Specifically, I wonder if memory improves because humans are social animals and the fact that social media promotes these social interactions that we tend to crave, we care more about the information presented to us and, therefore, have better attention and working memory function I would love to learn more about how social media promotes better cognitive function and empathy because this is a very foreign perspective for me Thank you!brbrDaryn Argo
Comment from : @darynargo7323

@joshuaortmeyer291
I'm not really convinced with this first experiment She says that the ones who were more engaged in posting comments below their friend's publication were more empathic But what if we turn this reflection upside down and say that the reason why they post more of these comments than the other people is because they're more empathic?
Comment from : @joshuaortmeyer291

@abbyvelez8931
I think this is a good perspective to have on social media I find myself sometimes only seeing the negative and forget there is many positives to it as well Treating our online connections as if they were in person would change so much

Dr Alloway, I thoroughly enjoyed watching this TED talk I thought your perspective on social media and how it has benefited the world was so unique, but so accurate Knowing the world before social media was around, and knowing it after, there are so many who only discuss how detrimental it can be I thought it was so refreshing to hear your side, and to hear the results from your experiments proving that it can be beneficial for us It can be used to bring happiness and positivity to so many more people, enhancing the happiness on a personal level I hope this impacts more people in a good way, amazing talk!
Comment from : @mirandadewoody3214

@milliebillie5324
We are hearing more and more often how social media and technology is not only detrimental to mental health but social relationships as well Dr Alloway introduced an optimistic and encouraging perspective that can promote empathy and selflessness amongst all of us It was very interesting to hear the relationship between working memory and social media Great talk!

@michaelwilliams-thomas8343
Great work Dr Alloway I have seen first hand that social media does encourage empathy I think we are more empathetic towards strangers on social media versus when we are physically connected with someone in person
Comment from : @michaelwilliams-thomas8343

@Miss3rica
This was such a refreshing perspective regarding the benefits of social media I feel like the narrative that is so frequently pushed is a negative one While I do think there are some aspects of social media that can fuel an individual’s narcissism, social media certainly isn’t limited to this I am a mother of three who works full time at a global bank and attends university full time Social media has afforded me the opportunity to connect to those I otherwise might not have the time to I hope people have come to appreciate it more throughout the confines of pandemic quarantines
Comment from : @Miss3rica
