Also one mistake many people make including what i did and still do, is going out of your cover in open field to kill enemies, its a bad habit of mine i did that because on DW its easy, but on DS its more about defending rather than being on the offensive You need to change your whole playstyle on DS, The only enemies you should kill is the ones in your line of sight but dont go out of the map running around and actively trying to shoot everyone

Underrated tip I usually play Mayhem, and the number of new players that join my lobby, and get overwhelmed, and heavily contribute to the resulting failure Is that they haven't learned yet on easier difficulties that in PD2's horde mechanics, you have to kill to survive And like you said, using cover is intuitive, but how to use it isn't so obvious A friend and I are pushing into DW to get our masks and I'll be thinking about cover more intentionally from now on, thanks!
