No closed captioning? And why don't you allow community contributions? I'd closed caption them for you Comment from : @CoughSyrup |

I remember in the 80's/90's, I saw a book on programming which contained the a glossary of terms brbrIf you looked under "Infinite Loop", it said "See loop, infinite"brbrIf you looked under "Loop, infinite", it said "See infinite loop" Comment from : @pzeller1 |
I feel a bit bad for that instance of dr Bagley at 1:13 that is still trapped in a infinite loop Comment from : @matteofalduto766 |

What a load of 💩 Comment from : @truthteller4689 |
mr alderson must be proud, having a beginner's bug being named after him :-P Comment from : @MusicEngineeer |
While coding I invented such kind of loops everyday,,,,, next time I will start naming them!! Might make me famous😂😂 Comment from : @tanmoybanerjee6275 |
this is why there is vim Comment from : @fadsgbcbxc |
Anyone think this guy looks like a British cousin of Phillip Seymour Hoffman? Comment from : @chrisshipley2960 |
I have seen this happen in users heads;br'Press any key to continue'brUser searches keyboard for the any key, Key not found, reread messagebragain search keyboard, key not found, reread messagebrCycle is only broken by a call to IT Comment from : @WaxingRadiance |
Tell me if the following is one more examplebrbrbrOld windows system booted up without keyboard and the screen waits and says brbrbrbr"No keyboard found, press any key to continue" Comment from : @AmandeepSingh-rj9xo |
@4:27 It's probably easier to get the code from that machine onto the internet via Optical Character Recognition, than figuring out how export it 💾😂 Comment from : @CalebMorrell |

No Mr Robot reference? Darn academics are wasting our tax money too much on research and too little on consuming pop culture Comment from : @arduenn |
Alderson Loop aka "do you have any more questions for me?" in a coding interview Comment from : @YashKMusic |
Classic example on a PC: "Keyboard not found F1 to Resume" Comment from : @MilliVee1966 |

It would be really cool if you could refrain from making videos that quote white supremacists as their primary source Especially when there is literally ino other source/i for the premise of the video than said white supremacist's self-promoting ramblings Comment from : @Squossifrage |
Hello Elliot Comment from : @gaiterade1006 |
A simple bug, but can be tricky to identify the cause, especially of your loop contains calls to several other functions, any of which might also do some operation on the variable being used for your exit condition Comment from : @Species1571 |
HERE: GOTO HERE; Comment from : @VoteScientist |
The reason this has a name is that it's much harder for a linter to diagnose than if you, for instance, forget an exit condition Comment from : @davidgustavsson4000 |
The reason this has a name is that it's much harder for a linter to diagnose than if you, for instance, forget an exit condition Comment from : @davidgustavsson4000 |
hahahaha "No one can vote for Mike" Comment from : @RafaelKarosuo |
Come on, this cannot deserve a name The definition is so vague that there could be a 32768 different implementations of “an exit condition that cannot be reached due to other parts of the code” I am putting this one into the “potatoes and coal in the Xmas stocking” category: cheap padding! Comment from : @albertbatfinder5240 |

bravo email Comment from : @TFSimple |

It's confirmed Computerphile is just another trick Sam Esmail has done to us Comment from : @darnokjarud9975 |

ohhh its a Parker Square Loop Comment from : @blacky6552 |
Hello, Elliot! Comment from : @anarchismconnoisseur2892 |

Mike is the best Comment from : @morethanyell |
Dr Steve Bagley's is stuck in an Alderson's Loop since 1990brHe has the option to upgrade his machine but that option is unreachable in the current implementation Comment from : @baapuji |
Might one not just call it a “Parker loop”? Comment from : @theobreakspear3068 |
Let go of all emotions Comment from : @adamma3798 |
you made a 7 minute video of while(1){}; Impressive! Comment from : @qqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqw |
I think a good analogy for the Alderson loop is like being in a room with an open door at roof level There are mechanisms for you can get out, but you can't reach them Comment from : @alvarofriasgaray4824 |
Why does this even have a name? It's just a broken loop Comment from : @2Cerealbox |
did I understand it correctly: Alderson loop is simply (at least in your example) an error in programming that makes loop without exit? Comment from : @zyghom |
Didn't know there is a name for buggy loop Click bait for me! Comment from : @venkataramana8488 |
An example of All Elbows is AllenBradley/Rockwell Software's RSLinx! Comment from : @kewakl8891 |

i have weird impression that video quality improved? Comment from : @mati_eux |
GOODBYE, FRIEND Comment from : @snehalmane |
A pointless video about a pointless and common defect Comment from : @benjaminscherrey1124 |
This video has got me thinking, it's very interesting from the current developer point of view isn't it Do web developers ever write a loop? And most backend devs these days would use some asynchronous call for user input yeah? I find the video very informative for highlighting a blind spot that just isn't obvious in the current environment Comment from : @fletch88zz |
The academic experts who haven't coded anything significantly useful in years ALWAYS go back to Microsoft VisualBasic from their childhood Comment from : @BrokebackBob |
Was hoping this was a Mr robot reference, hell yeah lol Comment from : @Ownage4lif31 |
This just explained the ending of Mr Robot Comment from : @wildhomestead8498 |
I had a programming teacher that taught us that we should actually explicitly write infinite loops in situations like this to make code easier to read and prevent unintentional bugs like this While (true){ stuff; if (user wants to exit) BREAK;} Comment from : @Locut0s |
Video dated 21 Dec 2019 but showing technology that is decades old Weird Comment from : @dakrontu |
I'm glad I've subscribed to computerphil last video! Comment from : @megabates9016 |
And this is why we use formal methods Comment from : @xurtis |
So it's just crap coding? I do that all the time😂 Comment from : @chrisred87 |
What did you do differently with the shooting of this one? Did you shoot this on a smartphone or something? The frame rate is wrong, color is way off and the audio is awful brbrI mean this in a constructive way of course I love your videos! Just please go back to the way they were shot before is all! :) Comment from : @Hiphopasaurus |
It's surprisingly easy to introduce this bug into hitherto-working code during a refactor It's why regression tests are so important Comment from : @davidgillies620 |
AKA OopsbrOrbrMy bad Comment from : @spicemasterii6775 |
Please tell me you're seeing this too Comment from : @uuuuuhhlettuce3909 |
I guess the SEO dude proposed this topic Comment from : @sznio |
Im not sure if you were trying out a new style, lens, or camera The wide angle view from close up is not appealing Also, the video kept shaking I dont know if thats you holding the camera, or some sort of software or hardware correction, but it was also annoying Comment from : @finkelmana |
I recently heard of 'galactic algorithms' That might be an interesting topic to learn about run time estimation and absurdly big numbers :-) Comment from : @hanswoast7 |
Hello, friend! Comment from : @prakhar9998 |
DAMN the hype i felt when i saw this among subs videos Comment from : @arch7143 |
I feel like this term only exists to perpetuate some unfortunate bullying/trolling of whomever Alderson isbr(outside the Mr Robot context, anyway) Comment from : @AySz88 |
We can relate to this on an intellectual level Comment from : @RamkrishanYT |
Nice to see some BBC Basic I still use it all the time Comment from : @Petertronic |
Otherwise known as a bug Comment from : @TimMeep |
I liked the funny ending with Mike You could have said "this video doesn't have an ending, please rewind!" 😃 Comment from : @danielgrace7887 |
This is very similar to what I call a “windshield wiper” loop Many years ago, I needed to write a program that would loop through a file, continually printing picking tickets in the warehouse as the orders were queued by the front office I needed to make the loop interruptible, because that terminal and printer were sometimes needed for other functions in the warehouse But I couldn’t interrupt it while it was in the middle of printing a ticket
br
brMy inspiration came from windshield wipers The wiper switch on your dash isn’t merely an on/off switch If it was, the wipers might stop in mid-wipe at the top of the windshield when you turn them off Instead, there is a system that senses the position of the switch at the end of each wiping cycle, and tucks the blades and stops if that switch is in the off position
br
brI wrote a system that didn’t interrupt the printing loop, but simply flipped a software flag when the interrupt button was pushed At every cycle of the loop, the status of the flag was checked and the job was interrupted at that point Comment from : @joedeshon |
The BIOS "Keyboard error - press F1 to continue" message is a prime example of this Comment from : @tocsa120ls |
Be sure not to use this in commercial software Microsoft owns several patents covering this loop Comment from : @johnredberg |
They are handy as debugging tools for embedded systems when you have a probe that can set memory values externally So you can change the program state while testing Comment from : @TheRealInscrutable |
So turn up the radio
brAnd turn off the lights Comment from : @user-lr4bo |
Who are you?! Comment from : @Printoutsofficial |
yeah but are Alderson Loop bad coding or is that an actual reason for them ? Comment from : @Mrmayhembsc |
What did Steve do to get Mike so upset at the end? Comment from : @goeiecool9999 |
So thats why uni fees are so high To pay for the Apple monitors :) the staff use Comment from : @TheStevenWhiting |
I just reached a new level of appreciation for Esmail's genius after realizing the choice of Elliott's name has a meaning! Comment from : @ismahenelarbi7386 |
