Many of you have asked me to do a video about Constructor Theory, an anti-reductionist idea pioneered by David Deutsch I don't have time to do a video about this in the near future, but I have a review on Chiara Marletto's recent book on Constructor Theory up on Nautilus: brbr nautilus/blog/the-end-of-reductionism-could-be-nigh-or-not Comment from : @SabineHossenfelder |

Flood the market with platinum and the price will drop Add to that the overhead of asteroid mining and you might be lucky to break even Comment from : @dionysus2006 |

You only need to know 3 words to get rich ' Stick Em Up ' ! Comment from : @paulfrancis8836 |

A lot of asteroids must have crashed on Mars, mining them and refining the minerals would give colonists something proffitable to do and send back to earth in exchange for technological resources Comment from : @philflip1963 |
So by all means let’s set up unregulated factories all over earth to make bacteria that eats minerals and dissolve planets to dust…what could go wrong? Comment from : @viscache1 |
Wouldn't a moon base make it more cost effective? There would be lower launch costs at the very least Comment from : @Countderpula96 |
I had thought they had given up asteroid mining in the short term in favor of helium 3 and rare metals used in electronics from the moon? Comment from : @KelsaRavenlock |
I'm glad you made this I have had friends who tell me how profitable that this will be and I have to explain in detail that even with the price of getting into space getting cheaper, there is still the challenge of getting all that stuff back on the surface I've been making this case for decades and I'm not even a rocket scientist but it's clear that some people are only thinking of tiny parts of the whole process I wasn't aware that there were only about 10 asteroids worth mining That makes my calculations that much more accurate Comment from : @ehrichweiss |
What if we just abandoned the profit model and simply minned asteroids not for a financial gain but to reduce mining activities on earth Comment from : @LungaMasilela |
It's Elon real goal A mining processing town on Mars for refueling, mining and processing ships in the belt Trillions await those who get there first He is no dummy Comment from : @davidlang4442 |

Solar-voltaic EM or laser fusing of Moon dust with mobile 3D printing construction at lunar shipyard sites seems a most-likely scenario for ark-sized spacecraft that would be built and launched in slight gravity with maglev rails that gradually push "spacecraft carriers" away as easily as we blow up a child's balloon and launch it with a finger Taconite dust is good practice, as EM waves have been used with it to patch potholes that plague cold winter driving on Minnesota's Iron Range We've designed and 3D constructed molds and models with remote contributions from all corners of the globe (ha!) already, but communication delays across vast open space must be eliminated with instant communications via quantum entanglement disturbances in particle streams brbrHumans, automation, and skilled work for those Cerridwen habitat and manufacturing facilities must still be transported from Earth, but landing mined materials on the Moon doesn't have the atmosphere and gravity penalty that we face now You can't just vacuum-up dust either, it floats and clings, and its iron content that allows fusing also makes attraction to charged moving screens and habitat walls essentials of daily life Dust harms moving parts and human lungs, as well as fogging-up the workplace Grand shipyards may be again in our future, this time in orbit? My goodness, so even astro-biomining is an existing, researched concept apparently As if there weren't already too many forwards-contamination risks already I guess I should not underestimate people's ingenuity for the creation of new severe ethical problems without them being aware of it Comment from : @eternisedDragon7 |

The only way to mine asteroids:br1 Find a valuable asteroid, made of platinum, gold, copper, or other valuable material Start in the asteroid belt, later move to the Kuiper beltbr2 Strap a rocket to the asteroid, drive it in orbit around the Moonbr3 Grate the asteroid like it was cheese The graters are based on the Moonbr4 Place the grated asteroid in capsules(with an heat shield) with a rocket, and drive the capsule to land on Earthbr5 Forget bacteria You need a lunar base for the asteroid gratersbr6 Be a billionaire Comment from : @rayoflight62 |

Space mining is about circumventing gravitational well problem of earth What I really would like to know is if molten metal in space can be manipulated in a similar fashion to that of a glass blower, but at a much larger scale say Dyson sphere Comment from : @drmosfet |
Space is the new snake oilbrCharletans like Elon Musk exploit foolish optimists for finacial gainbrbrIgnoring the insanely expensive refueling requirements and enormous technical difficulties of extracting minerals from asteroidsbrbrThe risks of landing the minerals back on earth would be unacceptablebrLets go with a conservative 100 ton load, as economicaly viablebrbrWhat would be the cost, should the re-entry vehicle suffer engine cutout after entering the atmosphere I leave it to your imagination what an out of control object that weighs over 100 tons and is accelerating will dobrMaybe they can succesfully detonate the vehicle - but that just spreads the incomming mass over a larger areabrbrName me a corporation or Government that would be prepared to undewrite the finacial cost of such an inevitable disaster Comment from : @Zombiekipper72 |
Some people are out of touch, scientific term is Spaced out :) Comic book reader, dreamers, philosophers, sci-fi fans ,when you found Elon Musk mission to Mars on the margins of term space out you found NASA and Google asteroid mining projects You found billionaires and satanic organization NASA that their astral body already left these Earth many years agobr Comment from : @phyarth8082 |
Seems to me the best approach would be to land a small rocket motor on an asteroid and slowly push it out of its orbit and into an earth orbit Maybe the asteroid itself could somehow offer part of the energy to run the motor That's the only scenario I can imagine being practical Well it's interesting about the idea is that it could put a lot of material resources in orbit for building spacecraft, stations, etc I wonder if any asteroids offer some kind of energy potential Like some could be for fuel and some could be for materialbrbrOf course, out in space your energy sources are unlimited! You can just use h-bombs Well, we certainly know how to build fusion bombs efficiently Maybe there is some kind of dirty inertial explosive fusion engine which could be your propulsion You don't have to worry about pollution or radiation out therebrbrThe interesting thing about hydrogen bombs is that once you start deuterium tritium fusing, you can make the bomb as big as you want just by increasing the length of the DT mass It's self sustaining Terrifying thought actually I believe it's why Einstein thought the Trinity test might be the end of the worldbrbrMaybe Sabine can comment about this phenomenon Comment from : @fieldlab4 |
Yeah all the really cool useful metals they're common in space Comment from : @jonathanjollimore4794 |
The last portion of Article II i"by any other means"/i could still be interpreted to include corporations I see it as a catch all condition However, no one wants to contest it for obvious reasons (ie $$$) I understand why the Outer Space Treaty was signed but I find it too restricting Corporations are now used as a work around to the nation-state restrictions and that's not necessarily a good thing It no longer matters as corporatism / neo-feudalism is our futurebrbrIMO, Space mining is less about bringing the minerals back to Earth and more about determining the viability of extra-terrestrial human colonies which would be a direct violation of the Outer Space Treaty, bIF/b those colonies don't sue for independence The reality is that any human Space colony will eventually sue for independence from Earth; not that any of us will see that day Comment from : @ivanfreely6366 |
It's a quick way to devalue precious metals Apparently there is one in our solar system that is mostly gold It is larger than all metals mined in the known history of man Comment from : @leighchristopherson2455 |
so make bacteria that can survive in space and eat metal sounds like bringing rats and shipworms on wood ships they didn't mean to Comment from : @chrisdavidson6785 |
I think the thing with asteroids: there's a few things that might be worth sending back to Earth, but most of it, the reason you'd want it is because of location Getting anything that far out is incredibly costly So it would be awfully nice if you could send a small machine out there, possibly with some people onboard, and turn it into a big machine, capable of supporting more people and larger operations Comment from : @petersmythe6462 |
oh you are hilarious how is this even realistic? today I will cost 4 billion to make 1 billionLOLbrsoon, ok today? no Comment from : @waltersgasolinemuseum5430 |
We will have to build a Minecraft 😁 Comment from : @timothym2011 |

This contains a lot of whatcouldpossiblygowrongs Comment from : @thephidias |

Bacteria grow very very slowly under harsh conditions brbrIt might work better to put a giant mirror behind the asteroid, and concentrate solar energy on it until the various metals start to boil off You could get considerable purity with fractional distillation Comment from : @jethomas5 |
The fact that even one fits the parameters for profit would change our civilization Comment from : @edreusser4741 |
So there are 74 meters squared of platinum on the earth today Now injects 10 times that amount by mining asteroids into the earth economy Sorry wealth is a measure of need or desire, now suddenly 10 time as much is on the earth, the price of platinum would collapse brThe best bet is mining for off world, building new ships, fuel, water, oxygen Mining for rare earth minerals for return to earth is a fools errand Comment from : @albertbarnett6106 |
Forget this mining stuff… Can’t we crash land a bunch of asteroids on Mars so that when we colonize Mars there’s rare bits of space dust all over?brbrBonus:with enough energy released it can melt ice and if there’s ice on the asteroid, boom water on Mars now, you’re welcome! 😁 Comment from : @influentia1patterns |
Imagine if Orville and Wilbur though that flight would never be profitable, as huge aero-ports and massive outlay of cash and materials would be needed? brHumans always find a way Comment from : @richardwebb9532 |
I'm glad to see our tax dollars are going to research to help mining corporations make a profit At least until those greed obsessed dolts accidentally deflect an asteroid into the earth Comment from : @flynnwhite9767 |
it's the fastest way i've found, police and cargo jobs don't come closes Comment from : @arcadealchemist |
How about a video on building a space elevator to get the minerals back to Earth? Comment from : @martinknapp7640 |
Basic economics: The current price of precious metals is due to their scarcity Bringing in such massive amounts to the market and their market value will drop significantly Comment from : @stevelux9854 |
Get rich? Wouldn't Platinum metals lose their value because there's so much of it? Comment from : @infini_ryu9461 |
Sabine, schon and already are not truly equivalents You’re using already incorrectly at time: a syntax thing Kuck mal im Duden, vielleicht Ich war Schueler auf der Amerikanishen Oberschuele Frankfurt I stayed in the Hilton there a few years ago A good place for drinks Comment from : @georgedobler7490 |
6:12 There is no need to „biodig“ for carbon it literally grows on trees :D Comment from : @lightningblender |
I don't think the asteroid will prove to be worth that much after it drops on the Earth precious metal markets It will still be valuable, but it won't meet the quintillions The inverse of a supply shock would drive the prices down Comment from : @diqweezle9751 |
Have you done any breakdown of your audience? There is so much dry humour in here I was considering putting these videos into my comedy playlist But I watch a lot of British comedy Comment from : @viperswhip |
Mining rights should go to the UN and they can go ahead and contract out, but ensure that we don't create a new tier of super rich There's already more than enough disparity and that money could be used on something good Comment from : @tuffwith2effs899 |
