I have noticed that when I pause, others are uncomfortable and try to help me fill in the silence I either move on without answering, or more often, say give me a moment to answer Others are less comfortable with the pause than I am

Autistic/ND people just can’t catch a break… people always think something negative about us We don’t make eye contact so we must be liars, we stutter and fidget so we’re “nervous and suspicious” some people can’t help that they stutter or say “filler words” it’s not “fear of silence” I rly hate ppl who are obsessed with body language and assume I speak it because, I don’t The way my body is positioned or moving is because it’s what’s comfortable in the moment I wish people stopped believing this stuff applies to everyone, because it doesn’t The thing is a lot of disabled/ND people don’t even know they’re ND and have no idea why everyone dislikes and distrusts them brPlease be mindful when applying this method to people Not everyone will fit in the box So maybe search up how to identify autism/neurodivergence so you don’t accuse disabled people of being “low status” or whatever 😊

In many cultures, looking people right in the eyes is considered impolite Americans in general are pretty rude in social context, too aggressive, in your face, like bombarding you with personal questions without introducing themselves first for example That makes you low status

Honestly, there was a time I'd follow advices like this But they made me feel fake, forced and basically just copying others In my heart of hearts, it didn't feel right to me I feel so off and not myself So now, I just be myself Maybe I'd tumble and fall, but at least I was being true and genuine

This only applies when you're being interviewed In a normal conversation, some people hurry to speak right away and even cut you off For instance, I tend to use "um" or speak hurriedly because my arsehole boss always cuts me off ie "pausing" won't work for me and it won't make me "look confident" instead I won't be able to get my message across because the other person just wants to cut me off right away
