Im so pissed ifi discontinued their iusb power series, they were ifi's ultimate solution to dirty usb power and reclocking The small ipurifers are good too, but the ultimate ifi solution is now gone Comment from : Hetsu |

I know it is unorthodox, but:brBatteries are supposed to be as good or even superior to linear power supplies brSo: why not use your Android phone (battery PSU) in airplane mode running bit perfect USB transfer via USB Audio Pro player into a battery-powered DAC such as the cord mojo 2 or a really good dongle DAC -amp ? I am doing this and enjoying the hell out of it ! I think this is a pretty good balance of values that inherently avoids some of the troublesome areas What I'm wondering though is what is the USB out of an Android phone as described clean dirty in between should something go in the signal chain to clean it up like a USB decrepifier of some kind ? I also found that the wiim pro Plus sounds great running off of a cell phone charger battery Comment from : Rita Auton |
ive got couple dacs including network devices like denon ns730 or pioneer n-50a which are great devices but with a time some features are come up and it makes those devices a bit obsolete (streaming services) so as a result after trying couple different usb dacs i end up with iFi V2 dac and i was happy with possibilities, but the sound still wasn’t that great as denon or pioneer mention before thinks has change since i bought iFi iPower X power supply and im amazed how big different of the sound is dynamics, low noise, clarity and now it become my main dac for network streaming like amazon music (premium) as i conclusion i must say any dac without decent external power supply will not work properly and good psu can shows up real dac potential Comment from : Johny666EU |
What if your DAC has the power supply built in though?brThere is no chance of upgrading that without some serious modifications, And finding someone willing to do the work Comment from : LD Williams |

Ifi has a Lan galvanic isolator now , was wondering what you thought about it for the source data Comment from : Maria Giordano |

Hi TarunbrHow to improve the audio of my tablet?brThank you🙂 Comment from : Alfonso De Felice |

I wonder how the Aires linear power supply compares to the other unit They say it makes a huge difference Comment from : BrianV Portugal |
PLZ open the ifi Power supply 😂 Comment from : MrNikolaus1988 |
The power supply is a very important component in an audio chain I have experience with various PSUs and can attest that they make a very apparent difference, no doubt Rob Watts from Chord himself had to admit in a recent interview that it made a significant difference on one of his designed DACs This is no snake oil at all Comment from : WorldView |
Does anyone have an idea if you can upgrade the schitt modius dac power supply if so what should I try thanks Comment from : Ronnie Bautista |
Greetings from TorontobrI just picked up the Topping E50 DAC …and everyone is saying ( because it’s a usb powered unit 5v 1A ) this is a very and informative videobrThank you Comment from : Carmine De Santo |
I have a streamer and dac with inbuilt high quality power supplies but didn't really get the benefit of high resolution streaming until I upgraded the power supply to my router as I used a direct wired ethernet connection so don't forget the router It would interesting to have a review on whether different routers can make a difference as I suspect this is an area that is not well explored Comment from : John Griffith |
Why not driving the player from a battery pack while you’re listening ?brMost of the equipment comes for 5 V … So, isn’t that possible ? Comment from : N R |
Yes, I can confirm this approach, as Im sure many thousands will also attest I fancied fiddling with this issue on my Bluesound Node, so having watched Alvins presentation over at Vinshine Audio, I fitted their linea power supply upgrade Wow, it really was like lifting a vail from my ears I wonder why manufacturers dont offer these upgrades themselves? $$$$$ Comment from : Iron Duke |

Will the MCRU be able to feed a 19V NUC? Comment from : Evert Kjellgren |

@A British Audiophile brTarun, I purchased my very first streamer, the Bluesound Node What is considered the best way to integrate the Node into my hifi system; via RCA output or via the coaxial output? Comment from : Ron H |

Loved the video "Water is poured on it" Once a Desi always Desi :)brbrJust got myself a WiiM Mini Streamer after running my Cambridge AXA61 with my phone all thru the pandemic Was dilly-dallying on the power supply but you convinced me to go for an Allo Shanti Comment from : Sujan Roy |
Complement of the seasons, I considering getting a 48v 8 power supply , do they really make such a big difference to the sound stage ect And which would you recommend With out spending a great deal there’re are lots on Ali express brbrHanzee Comment from : Hamzat Atta |
I have had the ifi power supply in my raspberry pi and recently I moved it to the wiiM mini I have never had a problem but I have never tried the stock one so I’m going to have to order a amazon one and try it $9 vs $69 Comment from : David King |
Very well done I apriciate your suggestions Comment from : Nikolaos Dimitriou |

Good advice Tarun I had been using a Bluesound 3rd gun Node as a steamer into my DAC I was happy until I tried the PD Creative modification converting it to an outboard LPS The change in sound quality was very noticeable and gratifying Detail retrieval, comprehension of lyrics, sound stage, overall nuance and tone improved The internal board is about $100 and arrived in the US in a week from Poland My 115/5v outboard power supply from China via Ebay for an additional $100 took too weeks (If you are not on 115v, PD sells their own power supply so recommended for UK and EU users) Accomplishing the upgrade (which is reversible) was 15 minutes requiring only a Phillips screwdriver and optional needle nose pliers The process can be seen on UTube Initially I was skeptical as to how much things could improve but I couldn't be happier with the upgrade Comment from : Fletcher Munson |
Tarun, would love to see you do some reviews on Schiit stuff but it appears they are in limbo I bought that new, crazy headphone amp and they’re not returning my emails Comment from : Phil Barone |

Hi Tarun, I am Streaming tidal masters from my MAC-Book Pro 2013 That has an SMPS Power supply Any recommendations to convert its supply to Leanier mode? Comment from : Binu Thomas Abraham |

The room reverberates, man! Comment from : No Names |

I recently bought my first standalone Dac, a Topping E50, it has a few upgraded chips that some much more expensive ones have, anyway in my research I found a comment or two talking about this topic, talking about a Jameco Reliapro, in the 5v flavor, it’s a budget option, many positive reviews on Amazon, I gotta say that the quality of the sounds are so far ahead of other things I have, if it fails I’ll get something of better quality Comment from : Vanilla |
Will this also affect my ifi zen stream? Comment from : Domm Yap |
you can feed a linear stage with a SMPS unit in this way you have both energy efficency and audiophile dc output quality just look at the Teddy Pardo LPS and see how the second half is build but yes, this is DIY activity Comment from : lupoal |
Excellent Comment from : Jose Garcia |
Great stuff Comment from : Sean Carroll |
You can go one step further My Singxer su-6 works with a small switching wallpower that feeds an ultra-capacitor Pitchblack, rockstable, and lighting fast Comment from : Wim van Gogh |

I dunno man, I'm an electrical engineer, and the idea that this low power arm powered streamer is any better than a phone or laptop connected to something like the schiit modi dac doesn't make sense Yes, those 1s and 0s are being handled by the dac all the same, and they're the same 1s and 0s being sent to the streamer from the noisy internet/wifi coming from god knows what environment the server serves them up And with all that variability, the digital files are unchanged (of course!) After all, that noisy laptop sends a pristine high bandwidth signal far more complex than audio digital to the display no problem, and no digital artist or whoever complains about noisy motherboards corrupting video signal brA power supply feeding a dac is a variable I can understand Good power makes a lot of difference to circuits doing conversion and the like Comment from : Mahdi Yussuf |
Meanwhile in the objective world a LG G7 phone has an internal DAC good enough to use until you're at least 3000 GBP into speakers/amps and 3000 GBP into room treatment :) Comment from : Ferdinand Bardamu |
I'm 1 week into using my 1st ever Linear Power Supply I bought a Sbooster 5v to try with my Qutest It has made a Fantastic difference to an already good DAC Its like having a new DAC, I'm really pleased I finally tried one after reading about them for a year or so Great Improvement : ) Comment from : BoredSilly |
Great video Tarun and food for thought I have similar Dac and DDS set up to you though with a cheap LPS from eBay for the mini Now I am wondering wether to invest in a better LPS or simply upgrade what is now a 5 year old streamer? Comment from : Matt Hollis |

can i come to your house and listen? I just switched to the ifi and it didn't do anything for me Comment from : Adrian |

Can i connect the ifi power supply to the ifi spdif audio ipurifier? or do i use it for my dac directly? Comment from : cofiking23 |
So if my device says 12v my linear power supply needs to be 12v? What would happen if my linear power supply was 5vor vice versa my device was 5v and the linear power supply was 12v? Comment from : backrack01 |
Thanks Tarun for this great video I went down the rabbit hole of power supplies and upgraded streamer and - to be honest - I was skeptical that an improved power supply would have any effect on a device like a streamer However, you're 100 right! I ordered the same MCRU power supply you profiled, feeding an ifi Zen Stream (MCRU actually has a power supply for the Zen Stream on their website) With the LPS in, I notice a bit more clarity and weight to the sound, and a darker background The power supply costs more than the streamer, but all in all, both seem reasonably priced Thanks for the help Comment from : JoshinDC |
Great video Tarun! Would there be an improvement if you were bypassing the DAC in something like the Bluesound Node? Has anyone found an equivalent to the MCRS for the US market? Thanks! Comment from : Tim Walker |
Hi Tarun, very nice video and again learned something new I myself never would have thought of it will affect the sound So thanks very much for this very informational video!!!brI'm about to add a Wiim Mini Streamer & Topping E30 DAC to my Denon X3700 to improve my stereo sound on the Wharfedale Evo 44 I'm not really happy with the internal DAC and the HEOS and Airplay2 playback from the Denon and think with a Streamer & DAC I could improve the Stereo sound br- Would you recommend to add an ifi iPower switch to the Streamer and to the DAC, so for each? br- Also which volt type would you recommend for each of the units? As there exist 5V, 9V, 12V & 15V I have no clue what would be the correct one for each of the 2 related units?brCheers mate Comment from : Heinrich R |
Have you tried a spare phone charger or the topping P50 linear power supply which retails at $129 The P50 has a 15 volt DC output and 2 5volt DC output Comment from : Kyron |
The music you listen to was probably made with ordinary xlr cables, mixers, and power supplies For there to be significant improvement, the everyday products that musicians use should be of such quality in the first place Only change power supplies if you can test, measure or hear hum or hiss without music playing, clipping transients at max volume (caused by insufficient power), or noise from other devices on the same power line Comment from : Its Dextrin |
Hi Tarun, GBP 230 is still a lot of money Ifi have come up with a new power supply, the ifi-X priced at just around the 100 mark I would love to hear your opinion if you can get your hands on one Power supply and clean power is an undervalued subject Comment from : Bert van Horck |
Hello sir Thank you for the useful information I don’t recall whether you addressed the amp rating at a particular voltage for the power supplies I’ve seen power supplies that have the same voltage but different amp ratings My Brooklyn DAC requires 12V/4-6 amp for external supplies The ifi ipower is rated 12v/18a How do I ensure I correctly match not only the DC voltage but also the corresponding amp? Will a power supply with fewer watts affect equipment performance? Thank you for any thoughts Comment from : Batwit Daba |
Hi Tarun, I'm new to all this stuff so go easy on me 😅 I just bought an Emotiva Ta-100 integrated amplifier (so it's a pre amp, amp, and Dac) Would these power supplies make a difference with the ta-100? Is it even possible with an integrated amplifier? Comment from : Milan Arambasic |
Sir please suggest best audio streamer for my old yamaha rx -n600 av receiver in budget Comment from : Mahadev |

I bought a SBooster for my chord mojo after seeing this I can't believe the difference I'm hearing Level of detail, imaging, soundstage, separation, even rhythm: all aspects improve significantly Wow! Comment from : binovucinic |
Very nice video thnx :) Comment from : Nika Vasadze |
Interesting but not a very conclusive or fair test You could have compared the ifi elite against the Mcru Also worth a nod at the fidelity audio range of power supplies would have been really interesting! Perhaps you can ask them to supply a few models to try against your much loved mcru unit? A dedicated ioniser is much better at producing ions -ve compared to the lamp btw Comment from : Michael Lindsay |
To be clear, linear power supplies have large current pulses and switching going on too In a linear power supply, as current is drawn, the full wave or bridge rectifiers switch on and off Their job is in to charge the following capacitive input filter that provides the DC output voltage to the equipment These current spikes that go thru the rectifiers can be quite high and produce harmonics which radiate into the equipment In a switch mode power supply that is well designed, the shielding requirements can be quite a bit lower compared to a linear supply It all depends on how well the designer has taken these factors into consideration for both types of supplies Comment from : mike connell |
i have topping e30 dac, do you suggest to use 5v power bank or a linear supply ? Comment from : John Spirou |

Quite long video but educational Up voted Comment from : HandyMan |

What would be an equivalent to the iFi iPower SMPS, but when you need 19 Volts? Comment from : Good Sound |

Is the chord mojo battery cleaner than a switch mode power supply? Comment from : Gullsz |
Great video The imponderables are numerous regarding streaming music I personally use a desktop pc, reasonable spec, Asus Xonar Essence STX II internal sound card, feeding audiolab 6000a feeding audiolab 8300xp feeding Wharfedale 124 , I tried JRiver but did find it over complicated and found that Music Bee is the best all round media player for windows based media centre pc'sbrbrI will be looking into the Mains Purifers, specifically the audiolab ones that seem to be getting the flavour of the month attention, I will update this accordingly, keep up the videos, always interesting Comment from : Dougie Roberts |
Very goodbrI just have a lot of doubts, do these Power Supply improve the sound or just change the sound signature somehow?brI ask because I've already used my DAC connected to a phone charger, power bank and also directly to the notebook, none of these 3 options is great, but I preferred it connected to my notebook for powering the dac, the sound I got connected to the power bank is really cleaner as they say, but poor in bass, a little claustrophobic and a little thin, connected to the phone charger it already has more bass, more depth, but I feel pain in my ear because it's harsh a little, on the notebook, it's more similar to the phone charger, but less harsh (still slightly harsh), with more detail and better sound stage, more organic too I've read positive reviews that IFI products are good and improve definition, leave almost no noise, but lose bass, is this true? Comment from : Marcos M |
please can you tell me the name of speakers??? thank you roberto Comment from : roberto bettini |
I applaud your care and consideration with maintaining standards, but it sounds to me that a better power supply might just improve the performance of a great many other mid range components Thanks for the work, and as always, you adherence to standards is greatly appreciated Comment from : Luke Rabin |
Hi, nice review I suggest to consider also a battery pack which may guarantee many hours of clean power supply Comment from : Luc Puc |
what's your recommendation for a power supply for routers that feed ethernet signals to streamers , I would say the power supply they give you is the worst and could have an affect of the signal , I recently swapped a 5E patch to a cat8 (22gu) Link Up$34 amazon and was impressed and I didn't think I would notice, Ive done some weeks in the past thinking I would get results that failed to impress but that ethernet cable is on the money 12V 3A is what I need you think the IFI is a bulletproof upgrade and I should stop right there? what's your thought on galvanic isolators like the pink faun? im trying to get the best possible signal to my node 2i Garbage in Garbage out thanks for your input and keep up the great work your much appreciated , Your a Pillar to this community an Oracle to many Comment from : Abby Giordano |
Thank you, well done (and without any snake lubricants !) The correct terms for the performance of a Regulator are line-&load-regulation and most importend is the graph over frequency, that are shown by serious datasheets from the various manufacturers Comment from : Christoph Schuermann |
Hi Tarun, and thanks for the video! I want to buy my first hi-fi system and I'm looking towards the AE1 speakers (active) In that review, you insisted on the quality needed from the source equipments I'm not sure if I need only a streamer (the Auralic Mini, for example), or if I also would need an external DAC with it Does the DAC inside this streamer is good enough for the AE1 active setup? Last question: given difficult the Auralic Mini is to find, what alternatives would you recommend around the same price range? Thank you very much Comment from : Benoît Lucet |
Let's dive into this topic with some fact & measurements: wwwaudiosciencereviewcom/forum/indexphp?threads/do-you-need-linear-power-supply-for-dacs7021/ Hum -125db noise at 70khz improved Interesting for our musical use or not ? Comment from : Julien Pardo |
Fire on, fire off, fire on again! It seems like one video but it must have been made in at least three sessions Very informative and interesting as usual I’d no idea power supplies could make such an improvement till Tarun’s recent videos I trust him more than most on YouTube who often seem to have a promotional approach Thank you again for simply explained yet reasonable technical explanations Comment from : Andrew Webb |
Great video, Tarun I'm thinking about upgrading my streamer from an RPi/DigiOne powered by an IFI wall wart to a fancier streamer, but I hesitate because I would be spending $1k and upwards and am wondering if I would notice that much of a difference Also, my streamer now runs RopieeeXL and serves as an Roon endpoint, which can't be said for many of the streamers on the market, which further limits my choices Being that I already have a very capable DAC (RME ADI-2 FS), do you think I would see a considerable improvement with a streamer upgrade? Sorry for the slightly off-topic question, but this video was as close to on-topic as I could find :) Comment from : aerostar |
Awesome review like usual ! i finally bought the sugden A21se because of your review and my DAC is a NAD C658 Any toughts on it ? Comment from : pliiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii |

Not sure how I missed this one Comment from : Tiger Tiger |

Another excellent review since we're talking about power supplies, anybody old enough to remember the Mission PSX power supply, I remember paying in the region of £50000 (irish punt) for one around 1985lunacy money when you think about it now, not sure how much that would be in today's money Hi Taron I'm thinking about getting a dedicated streamer now, instead of pc based streaming Comment from : Bill |
Hi, great hi fi advice Please provide details of your system tower rack Thanks Comment from : Phil Gee |

I really don't hear any difference whatsoever from different DACs Comment from : theprince08853 |
