Certainly was the average German soldier exactly this: just a soldier (as his opponants) - not only, but particularly the conscripts (by the way, there have been conscripts in the Waffen XX as well) And there have been Allied/Soviet war crimes as well (eg killing POWs eg during D-Day, uncountable rapes particularly on the Eastern front, torturing officers in the London Cage or Moscow) That does not justify or explain anything However, a single-mindet description of history is injustice and might lead to even more injustice

My great uncle was captured immediately in 1939 and sent over to England before going back home to East Germany He said everyone treated him very well and he would frequently visit England and Ireland

We Americans weren't perfect with our treatment of POWs from either front of the war We definitely made some mistakes and caused some unnecessary suffering, but we definitely did a helluva lot better of a job than the Soviets Lighter and Darker shades of gray perhaps?

My Grandfather was the minister of propaganda for the 3rd Reich I remember the stories he told me of how much he regretted his actions He wanted to make up for everything bad he has done He was a man with an unbearable amount of regret I remember some mornings when we went to IHop and when he ordered the breakfast sampler, he cried every time I ordered juice He reminded him of another word that just tore him down Now he is doing amazing things for Democracy He is currently helping build Dominion Voting System technology that could connect to the internet wirelessly He finished that chapter and now he now works at Hofbrauhaus cleaning tables and sharing his lovely German culture with everyone now!

There were Vichy French that held British POWs in North Africa When Vichy switched sides, the British POWs were quickly moved to the coast to be shipped home The Brits stole trucks, returned to the camp, and slaughtered the guards
