It is all about censorship resistance and decentralization If you forever increase the block size eventually smaller miners will not be able to fill up the blocks in time as more powerful miners/big mining firms confirm transactions faster We already have a system of fast digital payments that we use everyday with the banks What makes Bitcoin special is it's decentralization and that is why it must be preserved for its value Scaling is an ongoing area of research but the consensus is that on-chain scaling is less secure, more decentralized, and more censor prone

BitcoinCash BCH did a hardfork to switch its difficulty algorithm less than 3 months ago and it was so smooth that almost no one even knows about it ! it also did NOT split the BCH chain in two Proves that a hardfork is still the best & safest way to make a protocol upgrade BCH is by the way going to upgrade by hardfork every 6 months (agreed roadmap already) and the next one is in may 2018
