As a guy who read many romanian novels i could say that too many details and descriptions could be detrimental and even deadly for the story Here you could find not bad stories but overfilled with descriptions of every detail, so very tiring for the reader Comment from : @sonetworkhamster |

Chuck Pumpernickel? 😢 Comment from : @stacieknock5828 |

my readers never really point out anything wrong with my writings, but i knew theres lots of areas to improve on it didnt feel 'real' or 'dramatic' enough to make me feel excited over it while reading (as the writer herself) this is great, thank you so much! Comment from : @hungryfishie_ |

this is an amazing video !! I’ve been writing since I was 13 and I’m currently in my 2nd year in my BA degree :’) I definitely needed this for my portfolio final I need to get out of the trap of telling and show more— but I get nervous all the time that what I see doesn’t come across as what people see… myself writing too much and losing the flow… too much detail but that the fun of reading, everyone sees it differently brbrthis video really changed my way of thinking Comment from : @maybedaze25 |
Thank you for your video! and great extra resources peppered throughout, for more exploration! Comment from : @Whateverstaken |

So, I am just seeing this three years after the fact I am stopping at about the three minute mark Why? Well, already the video was a grab bag of stock footage clips - not good But I was letting that go Until another TED Talk doofus shows up He's such a genius that he thinks the camera doesn't catch him reading from a teleprompter I despise TED Talks They have turned even accomplished people into stock footage They look the same, talk the same They are marketing themselves as "thought leaders" (gag) It's like watching the Home Shopping Network Comment from : @teacherofteachers1239 |
Let's just avoid language altogether lol Comment from : @robotronsage8812 |

Comment from : @ChanTha-xn2bl |

Informative video I signed up for more I write historical fiction and now must abbreviate body moments thanks to your comments I"m getting better at showing but videos with the examples you provided really helped Many thanks Comment from : @sharonyogart1 |

Okay I'm super late to the party here, but wow this video is magicbrI've watched countless videos and what not regarding writing structure, but this one REALLY manages to get the point across I did a bit of test writing with the theory after watching this and my god does it just flow and feel so much nicer- quite literally made me redo the entirety of a small writing project I've been working on for a few years nowbrI don't know why I haven't been able to quite nail that narrative feel until now, but this was an incredibly useful video Thank you so much Comment from : @elsgare8485 |
Tell it all Let those who truly live in fear discredit and label you Fuck the system Fuck the machine brbrThere is no benefiting from keeping your mouth shut Say whatever the fuck you want When you want However you want Comment from : @davidrice9900 |
6:15 Chuck Pumpernickle Hehehe Good one brJust wanted you to know I was trying to pay attentionbrAs a long time radio broadcaster, I see the intrinsic value of your take on this subject How you break it down has application in my fieldmbrSomebody once complimented Mark Twain on a speech he gave in Grass Valley, Ca He responded by saying "thank you, if I had more time to write, it would've been shorter" Meaning that words have more power when boiled down to their essence Like poetry Comment from : @nopeyadayadayada1248 |
The combination lock would ve warm from her ass 6:50 😂 Comment from : @luxelore143 |
لما تقف قدام ربنا ه show or tell🤔 Comment from : @nehalnagib3783 |

Storytellers, writers, anyone could pen a work and declare themselves this Being an author is taking on a job to work on being better This video gives me a glimpse of an outline of things I should be giving consideration to as I write a story As a reader, there were a few things I like authors to address Small demands I like met When they were, I was faced with a heavy load of reading materials that stressed my brains out, making reading a tiresome activity, not leisure At the end of this video, I'm stuck with, what kind of author do I exactly want to be? Flexible Accomodating Progressive Comment from : @user-do3lo5go6c |
this is insanely helpful Comment from : @em-mc8nv |

One disagreement, body language is better than dialogue, thats when the actors truly actbrbrDaniel Day Lewis in There Will Be Blood: "I abandoned my boy" the words are repeated on request but the feelings about this is all in the face, the body and its an Oscar worthy performance brbrSteve McQueen will reduce dialogue to nothing and give you everything with a look Brando did this to seduce and play with his audience and the actors on set, with just a look or gesture, a master of the craftbrbrAl Pacino in Godfather before he blows the Lieutenants head off, another great example brbrIts a bit of both of course but to suggest dialogue is better is too easy and seems to remark about the old overacting styles of early cinema Comment from : @redcanvasltd3267 |
Great video, thank you Comment from : @BookGiveaways |
Thank you, this was incredibly well-crafted and useful education and entertainment My two main thoughts right now are: 1) I have much to learn and I need to keep improving with each page I write 2) I look at my writing and see that every so often my instincts serve me well and I show and avoid telling in ways that professionals would probably recommend I am more confident now, but also hopefully more humble and willing to accept further advice from all sources Thank you once more! Comment from : @metrenswritings |
Nice But aren't most apples red? By that I mean, try to cut out unnecessary adjectives whose sole purpose seems to be to show off one's vocabulary Show yes, but several of the rewritten examples got bogged down with too many details, too many adjectives, and thus too many words James Joyce ends the first paragraph of his short story Eveline with the sentence, "She was tired" Comment from : @jwghostwriter |
"She cry" or "Her red face fulfiled with tears"? 😊 Comment from : @TranskripFilm |

I command respect, therefore I will tell you how to do things, showing during writing is too soft to be obeyed and/or respected Marcus Aurelius Comment from : @HoodGrownGenius |
I'm only 20 years old, but currently working on a novel and a shorter story on the side Its been really hard, and its challenging to get constructive criticism from people But this sharpens my mind to help myself Thank you! Comment from : @coffinhost1621 |

Chuck Pumpernickerl ???😂😂😂 Comment from : @giorgiosculofakis5304 |
Never works I rather show and tell because it does not make sense to show people situations and not tell them what is happening in stories and other activities Show and tell works all the time Comment from : @joytimmons |
I love this With examples It's so hard in a script to do Thank you Comment from : @NailFactoryProds |
What I have noticed is that telling is expectable in first draft while you are trying to figure everything out but by the 3rd or 4th draft you need to have most of those telling spots shown Comment from : @huskygold5319 |
For so long I’ve been trying to properly understand how I’m supposed to use show dont tell and this video finally actually answered all my questions! Thank you!! Comment from : @harperlynn1440 |
Dont know the feeling brWhat is this intro like in literature what is the word used to describe it Comment from : @eliotanderson6554 |
Very interesting but it gets confusing when one’s tone of voice reading passages of a book and providing explanation is the same Comment from : @elproject3343 |
rubbish Comment from : @cacoethesllc6372 |
0:50 "Showing dramatises; telling summarises" Except Showing can also be shorthand more direct way to convey Telling can be long-winded - - it's not the scenic route but the tailback of clauses and qualifiers and exposition can mean gridlock brAs ways to convey your world view, it's the difference between Description & Explanation Comment from : @4-dman464 |
There was nothing wrong with the first sentence You can get too distracting with extraneous details Simple is sometimes better You can also make the reader feel something through suggestion It's a hypnotic technique, and probably why most people aren't disciplined as readers, because they don't know how to enter into that state yet Which is why we have unbearable comprehension skills lately I personally get nothing out of that image The "DIsagreeable little child" is more of show to me, than describing her sickly appearance It just impacts me more Actually A lot more It communicates more nuance Comment from : @BKNeifert |
Balance show and tell Either can increase or decrease story pacing Comment from : @Greatermaxim |
Idk what that 1st excerpt was from but it was awful Only gonna watch Long enough to find out what it was from So I can never read it Comment from : @blindbrailleable |
3:22 now THIS is my kind of TedTalk Comment from : @DaddyT21 |

Thumbs up from me after 3 minutes because you made a video about writing and I lasted this long already The quality of your writing is a rare joy to encounter Comment from : @no_one_of_that_name_here |
Lol Skip The title of this video ismoronic Movies show; written words tell PS As a bonus, though, you get 27:18 of galaxy-class narcissism! Comment from : @hughmacdonald3595 |
If someone must to be told how to write, he is not a writer to begin with Comment from : @ReventiX |
I think "show, don't tell" is wrong way to put it More descriptive would be "descripe, don't explain" You're not writing a news article or text on what is the best tool to write a book You're describing events that happen to a person and yes information can be conveyed this way too Describe the character's views and what the person sees This is how I understood it from this anyway Comment from : @MonogoMango |
One thing I love about stories in books is I always visualize the scene in my head and it's stuck I probably have a clear view on how the coastline looks like, how the hotel rooms are built, how characters feel things, sometimes it's so well written i even deduce things that weren't even talked about That's when I know a story can be magnetic and engaging to me, I personally love to feel taken hand by hand to the place so I can see it myself Comment from : @gabrieleriva_bboykappside |
At 14:31 i feel like the second example is WAY more melodramatic than the first, although it shows more than tells Comment from : @d00mf00d |
It's debatable Telling shows toobrbrExamplebrbrSentence 1brA knife jaunted to every corner of the Wilson Manor, and it took soul from flesh, beginning with RosemarybrbrContinuation (Sentence 2)brThe hunt was almost over Rosemary lay lifeless on the couch; the corpse of her parents idled in their bedroom, and her daughter—whose blouse was soaked from sweat and tears—hid under her bed The culprit? The father, Harold SwasbinbrbrA comprehensive reader would've hinted right away that this was an ongoing murder scene Sensory details were not necessary It's called a story, tell as much as you like as long as you give them meaning and arrange them properly Also, if you've read Tolkien's work, it's mostly telling and abstract imagery, yet it is comprehensive enough for a reader to picture the information they have digested; and it was a success Comment from : @jamescebb |
Bullshit Comment from : @eurekal1903 |

"How to show, not te-"br"Shut up"brbrThe solution was in the reply all along Comment from : @faolinaingeal |
