I use flaps in a turn all the time as a student Never once has my CFI said anything brbrMaybe it is because I am learning at a difficult field to land on and in gusty winds for most of my lessons, but changes in configuration are purely based on the conditions

The whole discussion about split flaps only makes sense when you talk about EXTENDING flaps during a turn, not having flaps already out during the turn

I think it's common practice to take the first stage late down wind, second stage on base and full flap on final

Stall speed increases in level flight, but in the pattern, you should be in a descent once abeam the numbers I would think it increases less than 20

Yeah! We're more likely to go 45 degrees bank angle when you overshoot Final on the, Base to Final turn with parallel runways and contra-circuits Going 45 may be all you have to avoid head-on traffic if you don't pay attention

Geometrically, the turn radius should only depend on bank angle and airspeed If you can find a reputable engineer to explain how extending flaps alone will essentially tighten a turn when no other parameters have changed, I’d love to hear it

Not a pilot here but this question just seems nonsensical to an outsider I've never been on a commercial flight that didn't bank with flaps They're all doing it wrong? And if you're worried about split flaps and an uncontrolled roll why only during a turn? They would cause roll no matter the attitude wouldn't they? Something just seems odd that this is a debate 🤷🏾‍♂️

Modern fighters’ computers put flaps down a little automatically when the pilot pulls into a turn to produce more lift and help the turn so I don’t see why not if you are operating within the flight envelope

As someone with thousands of hours flying in the mountains and having had an asymmetric flap failure and survived i can say “leave your flaps alone” NEVER apply flaps in the turn One call is “WINGS LEVEL FLAPS” Never apply flaps in the turn!!!! Applying flaps in the turn is a bad habit to get into Your preaching to inexperienced pilots who are likely to stall in the turn due to increased drag Better to teach a min defended speed Most people stall in the turn not hit the side of a valley during a U turn
