I've heard the question "Why don't the best and the brightest seek leadership?" asked over and over to important people during interviews and all of them seemed to not have an answer It's easy The things that make people the best and the brightest do not serve them in America's system of political campaigns America's system of choosing leaders rewards the dishonest more than the honest, the unethical over the ethical, the incompetent con over the experienced straight shooter And, that is pretty much the fault of the voters One way of attracting more of the best and the brightest would be to create a series of mandatory tests for all candidates of high office The tests could be modeled after the LSAT which is the test law school applicants must take before being accepted It would at least show the public what the candidates know, what they don't know, and what they can do on their own without the assistance of their strategists and speech writers This would attract more of the best and the brightest into seeking leadership and it would dissuade many of the scoundrels and dummies from getting into the race
