Eventually! brHighly useful topic!brFor recent times, I’ve been trying tons of different productivity tools (to-do, project management, note taking) brIt’s infinite rather rat race: each has pros, cons, features, need learning curves etc brIt’s true: you falls in the deep “productivity trap” - instead of doing things done you procrastinate and procrastinate 😅brbrRecently I’ve noticed that in old days my plain and simple paper note and pen was my most powerful productivity tools: simply write daily /weekly check lists and cross what you’ve done ))brAfter paper and pen I remembered that I had been using Apple Note and Reminders - simply plan, write, check, remind, done )brbrYep these simple tools has own drawback, but you simply use it and achieve your goals but not overwatching tons of YouTube videos brbrSo guys, my advice:br1) grab what you havebr2) adjust and use it br3) move to your real goals brbrWish the best! brbrAnd again thanks a lot to the Author! key takeaway for quick navigationbrbr00:00 🤖 Personal Knowledge Management (PKM) can be a form of procrastination for many people, making them feel smart but not necessarily helping them do better workbr03:10 🛠 PKM can lead to a constant pursuit of a perfect system, which is an elusive goal Doing good work often involves uncertainty, frustration, and action despite messbr05:14 📚 Collecting notes and information without using them to produce tangible outcomes is unproductive It's the application of knowledge that mattersbr06:25 📋 PKM should be viewed as an aid to work, not as the work itself Productivity comes from doing the actual work, not just managing informationbr13:04 ⏳ Stick with one note-taking tool for at least six months to avoid constant tool-switching and focus on doing the work Comment from : Natta Charoen |

I loved it Comment from : Anish1 Personal |

Fucking rightbrI've overlooked all 1200 plugins for Obsidian to optimize my note taking process instead of Reading? Using your knowledge?brI use Obsidian to create my own wiki about coffee (its sorts, breaing methods and so on) and writing a personal diarybrThat's good, because there are so many sources of info about coffee, that you can't jogging them at same time, if info is not at same placebrBut DON'T fall in trap of using of Obsidian as task manager It can be good enough (there is even plugin for notifications), but you'll constantly want to upgrade it to the level of ClickUp or TodoistbrI'd say, that all you need when planning, are paper, pen (or just Obsidian with base plugins) and bunch of your current and everyday/regular tasks, which you can arrange on your day planbrPlanning is another "sophisticated" procrastination, which can be even less productive, than note taking, because you don't work with related info, you work with your preferences in organizing the work Comment from : Иван Старовойтов |

Good advicebrI appreciate your personal transparency Thanks for sharing Comment from : Inspired Earth |

It made my life more unproductive I jumped from apps to apps just to find the perfect tools that suit me But found none Now I have decided to use the simple tools that comes with the phone automatically even though it is imperfect Not gonna install any productive apps anymore Comment from : Sakib Ahmed |

Does anyone know of an app that allows you to edit text in the same way notion does (aka holding and dragging a block of text around)? That is the only feature that I really care about (it making writing on a phone a lot easier ) at it seems to be really hard to search for Comment from : 6th assistant VP in charge of buttonholes |

there's some things that i can really agree with you, brbut still, if the color "graph view" motivates you to take notes of important things (like financial education stuff for eg), it means that the tool fits to you well :) Comment from : Marin8(brb) |

This video kind of lines up with my opinion of pretty much every single tutorial on note taking apps out there Pretty much all of them tell you all about bhow/b you and them use said app without telling you bwhy/b you should or bif/b you should Comment from : BrunoDSL |

Very good advice I began looking for note-taking apps to somehow organize the growing level of ideas, possibilities, things to learn, do, read etcbrMy challenge is that I am old school, a baby boomer and I don't find in myself that cache of "how to navigate" everything tech I've learned a lot in the last few years It's just too much to be able to file it into disparate folders I began using Obsidian and it is very helpful What is most challenging is learning to use the thing It is the overwhelm generally, in life, that with going digital (I had always been a "hands only guy") includes a very steep learning curve And now there is Artificial Intelligence bearing down on everything The complexity of everything is staggering Comment from : Pedro Gonzales |

🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation:brbr00:00 🤔 Personal Knowledge Management (PKM) tools like Obsidian, Roam, and Logseq have gained popularity, but many people use them as a form of sophisticated procrastinationbr02:42 🧠 Creating complex PKM systems can make you feel smart, but feeling smart doesn't necessarily mean you're doing good workbr03:10 🏃 Chasing the perfect PKM system is a trap; there's no perfect system, and real progress involves embracing uncertainty and messinessbr04:33 📚 Collecting information without using it to create something tangible is unproductive; it's the application of knowledge that mattersbr06:25 📝 PKM is not work itself; it's a tool to aid your work Don't treat it as a prerequisite to productivity; focus on doing the actual workbr10:19 🔄 Avoid the "optimization procrastination trap" by aiming for a good enough system and prioritizing doing real workbr12:34 🧠 Trust your brain; insights often come when you're not actively taking notes Relax and filter out irrelevant informationbr16:06 📓 Be project-based in your note-taking; focus on taking notes related to specific projects to avoid aimless note-takingbr17:27 🚀 Prioritize improving your work capacity and output over perfecting your note-taking systembr18:39 📅 Set actionable limits for working on your PKM system to prevent overindulgence and procrastinationbrbrMade with HARPA AI Comment from : Rodrigo Vanegas |

This video reminds me of an idea, I think it was from Atomic Habits, that says that preparation can be a trap because it gives you the illusion of progress without the risk of failure So true!brbrThanks for a thought-provoking video! Comment from : Johnny Utah |

Counterargument: A Phillips (X shape) screwdriver is a tool A Flat Head ( -- shape ) screwdriver is a tool A Star Tip ( * shape ) screwdriver is a tool brToo many tools not enough hands, so you can decide to seek a tool belt ORbrExchange your 3 tools for 1 Automatic Multi-Tool with 5 swappable tips in the handle and a battery brEh? Eh?! Problem SOLVED 🧠brbr🤔 I've accomplished nothing here Comment from : Digital Everest |

Going from procrastinating with Note-Taking Apps to procrastinating with videos about Not Procrastinating WIth Note-Taking Apps if you want, you can just sit on a chair and stare into the sky all day you don't need to lie to yourself Gulliver! Comment from : Peter Pagh |

Rant:brI'm not trying to over-optimize, but there's no usable optionbrbrI have two simple handrawn notes apps, one on android and another one on windows, and obsidianbrbrContinuing work started on one and resuming on the other is a pain in the ass Syncing is a pain in the ass And linking the content with obsidian is also a pain in the assbrbrIt seems like the only two options are Onenote and Samsung Notes The first one is slow as hell and the second is only available on samsung devicesbrbrThe note-taking market is garbage period Comment from : SirDella |

|
This is a great video! If I could add anything it's that for folks who are procrastinating with notes: underlying imposter syndrome may be fueling their perfectionism and the associated procrastination I struggled with it since PKM was called "information science" 😅I realised that having no original work to show for all my research was not protecting me from feeling like/being seen as an imposter, it was making it worse Create something, put it out there, deal with potential criticism, learn, repeat Comment from : Em P |
|
You saved me I'm trying to learn how to use notion and want more and more but I can easily build or copy one simple system for me that does the things I need I don't need more You just described what's happening with me You just saved me dozens and dozens of hours Comment from : Space Lemonade |

You just put an awful lot of work in the simple message "think, analyze and ACT" don't forget to ACT! The real value for this kind of apps is in the analyzing part, it helps to analyze your thoughts When a good idea pops into your mind when you're drinking your coffee, write it down so you can analyze and act on it later And let's not forget the power of visualizing your goals A good example for a note could be THINK > ANALYZE > ACT 😉 Comment from : T VdC |
|
This video is amazing It should be added as a reminder under every PKM video out there, because many people, me included, have a tendency to fall down this rabbit hole Particularly resonating was the idea that people from earlier times and centuries did immense work without any notion or obsidian or whatever the new apps are, without even any phone Just get up and do the work Thanks ! Comment from : Stéphane Richard |
|
I got called out oof Comment from : Angela Eunice Umandap |
|
Recently, when I was taking notes for college, some of my friends told me that I should use notion or other type of app to take notes I find it stupid that they take some much of their time just to customize the repository instead of making the notes itself I'm happy with apple notes and I stick by it Comment from : Simão Andrade |
|
People are claiming to use notetaking apps for "productivity"? Is this some kind of mass prank on hustlebros? Comment from : Jergling |
|
Despite what the title leads you to think (and maybe why you clicked), Sam's video is no ant-PKM so much as helpfully expanding on the warnings about PKM that Tiago Forte (referenced in this video) and others mention but don't spend time on brAs a student, while PKM is definitely for me, it's good to be reminded to think before changing system and to not let notetaking become the work Matt's right that it's a tool to facilitate projects like writing chapters or articles, preparing presentations and so on brI'm currently thinking about changing from OneNote to Obsidian because Obsidian may help me to visualise and notice links between my research But I'm undecided so open to your ideas Comment from : Chloé Steward |
|
Sam, you're awesome THANK YOU! I resembled everything you said Now that I know, I'm making that change!!! Just to let you know, I looked up and said, "Thank You God," for leading me to this site Comment from : WL Davis, Jr |

All of the examples of the people who used a "smart note" method given in their videos are people I've never heard of, and most people who did great things never had to take "smart notes" to do it From my experience, people who are more "accomplished" use approximately an average note-taking/knowledge gathering system as people who are less "accomplished" Comment from : Tyrjil Vincef |

If you feel I am procastinating doesn't make me I procastinating I live my life as I wish Comment from : revanth kalavala |

"you need to learn and you need to know how to make progress despite the mess" 4:01 brThis spoke to my soul Mess is one of my biggest fears I avoid making messes in the traditional sense and mentally because of this fear Im going to try to be more aware of this as its happening Comment from : Chelsey Withers |

Such excellent timing for this video to appear in my feed! brbrProcrastination is a sneaky thing and I think I was about to fall into this same trap of feeling productive and smart brbrI'm really excited to dive into obsidian (Coming from ah, having no real system for some time after my last one fell apart) but I will remember to set clear boundaries and prioritize the actual work that will get me resultsbrbrThanks for making this vid! Comment from : Jason Renard |
|
Vicky taught me to use obsidian to store my Zettelkasten notes/ideas and for that I actually felt and was productive Comment from : Angelica Loi-on |
|
You got me I used OneNote for years and was satisfied with it Nevertheless, I wanted to replace it because it is a proprietary system and the quality is getting worse Now I ended up with Obsidian and feel good with it The possibilities and the large number of plugins have overwhelmed and fascinated me and I spend a lot of time trying, although I get on well with a few essential plugins Thanks for the wake-up call! Comment from : EmmWeh |

Wow - THANK YOU Sam! This video was exactly what I needed to hear I have been caught in these note-taking systems circles for a while now I think most of it will be solved now that I'm finally narrowing down on what my output projects are Now that I'm getting clarity on what's worth capturing and simple structures for organizing - it all seems manageable Still narrowing down on what's a realistic number of project goals tho Currently building a dance studio community in Knoxville Tennessee and my personal brand as a professional linguist and language lover (new YouTube channel and book) With all the different platforms that go into promoting those (LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTube, Facebook, websites), I'm worried I'm still overcommitted and spreading myself too thin Any suggestions on how to keep scale of project goals realistic? Comment from : Emily Sabo The Language Girl |

This is really good advice It‘s like you‘re trying to call me out personally and while listening I realized that the same thing can be said about techbrIf you find yourself researching new productivity tools and tech… you‘re probably procrastinating as well There‘s obviously differences but I see myself procrastinating in the most inconspicuous ways and it‘s annoying Comment from : D E |
|
I don’t think ANKI belongs on the thumbnail that shit slaps and isn’t really a note taking app Comment from : Kevin Piczer |
|
On the other hand maybe the PM systems aren't really that thought out I have tried everything All I really wanted was a good hierarchal system of items (not folders) that had tags as well Also, have the input be fast, meaning "send text here" or "send a link there", and keyboard shortcuts to files That's all I really asked for If I had 100 hours a day I think I could create one Okay, enough procrastinating Comment from : Allen Jennings |
