Why is truenas the only option? Can't you use Windows to also use the PC for other purposes? From the perspective of the PCs accessing Truenas, it is just like a shared folder

Basic questions please: Why is the IO expansion card needed for 4 sata hdds if the board has 4 sata ports available? Second, why not an apu for being able to use a monitor when needed? Third, in case of using ssds instead of hdds, would the "plug" method change? Thanks in advance

I might suggest making the cache SSD redundant because normal ZFS pools will be lost if one vdev is destroyed, maybe a cache vdev is different, but I'd want to be sure I've got it set up so the Optane SSD cannot bring down my pool maybe just like some of the last few minutes of small file transfers at most However, ZFS is very very good against disk failures and bit rot, so I would assume that there is some way to make it so the Optane can be yanked or destroyed and the pool will still work just without the super fast cache to accelerate it

Just another PAID SPONSOR The N1 can be a good setup but unless you want to melt your HDs This is not the case for you I have one and HD temps are the biggest issue other than bad cable design The only way to keep HD temps reasonable to only run 3 HD at max This allows enough airflow and enough to keep the CPU This is nothing but a loud case I know because replacing it after losing 2 HD to heat for NAS
