Why restart the service when you say right afterwards to restart the machine? Save some time and just restart the machine, and in doing so, that service will be restarted for you Comment from : @DDT2005

for those who can't stop the service, there is a button on the bottom right cornerbthat says "services" click it and another window will come up, scroll down to you find Windows update and right click on it and stop It will stop widows Comment from : @cupontime1

This worked for me on two separate computers I was updating, both were originally vista units that had been upgraded to Windows 7 first, and both stuck at the same point of "Checking for updates" during the Windows 10 install It worked on both of them, one is a Toshiba laptop and the other was an HP desktop I recommend you try this I did have to go into safe mode to complete it, which was simpler as it automatically turns off the Windows Update service Comment from : @jaxkearney
