First I would like to say I like watching what you have to say on YouTube about gardening, It's most informative and has helped me tremendously BUT you have mentioned that Onion sets can be Expensive, "NOT True" I just bought a 100 Sets or bulbs of red onions for only $325 and a 100 Wight onion sets for the same price Now it's true that you get more of a bang for your buck when buying seeds but thinking of the time that's saved when buying large quantity of onion sets instead of buying seeds to me it makes more sense to just buy onion sets or bulbs than spend time growing from onion seeds

I juXZ for my northern Zone 6 clime I started two flats of Heirloom Walla Walla from Seeds of Change Not big on saving seeds but I do like SOC's mylar resealable packaging as I al5ways have a library of seeds and in a stable climate (just not wet) On that note, how many seeds do you drop in each hole? I know one is never enough and if they're easy to separate I figured I'd put several over the 2" square and top with peat I grow most things in bulk and close packed for thinning into cups or peat pods as they grow because I give a ton away to neighbors and at foodbanks, so singles is cool for a lotta veggies I think these will be my early onions as it's late march and hot summer will be here in 3 months but maybe I'll make sets and can't wait to do a winter planting Also trying to get a rhubarb and asparagus patch in

You should toss in that it’s important to cure them after you pick them for slicing onions I use a metal screen and leave them to air dry and harden off

loops are caused by too coarse soil medium, use more sandy soil, (the seed is what gets stuck) (the black part,) after germination the black empty shell catches on bigger soil objects, try it more sand less loops , it will germinate just fine in fine sand

Thank you for a great video! I planted my Walla Walla onion seeds on July 20th, they germinated in 4 days and are under grow lights for 16 hours a day They are in a rectangular seed tray instead of individual cells I have been cutting them down to about 3-4" Do I need thin them out at this point? When would be a good time to plant outside here in Victoria?

I am in western Washington, so long days of sunlight now I have onions in my garage that are growing like crazy from the low light of the one window 30 feet away So I am guessing these onions need low light I can’t control the sunlight outside Should I just pot them and grow them in the garage? If I plant them outside they will get too much light and not produce well, correct?

Thanks for the video, very helpful and straightforward! One question thoughif you are starting them in seed starting mix and it is going to be awhile before they go into the ground, do you fertilize to add nutrients at one point or do you up-pot into something larger with a potting soil mix instead?

Great advice and video Especially about dealing with loops They can literally pull the plant out of the ground as it grows I also advise bottom watering especially until the plant matures as wet sprouts are very prone to water-borne diseases One area of confusion - how many seeds do you sow per cell? In a few brief frames it appears you sowed a bunch of seeds, perhaps 6-8 But your mature plants appear to be mostly 1 per cell or perhaps 2 or 3 in some Do you thin the plants? In the past I typically planted 1 seed per cell but after successfully growing in rows packed with seeds, I'm thinking of planting 3-4 seeds in cells this year Your point about water may explain why last year was my best crop ever All the rain was good for them - but bad for the tomatoes!
