@xmariner
This guy is a poet He really puts a picture together (and appreciated by someone who is familiar with old ships) brbrI also have to say there are some beautiful stories in the comments Take some time and read thembrbrWar is horrible But I think it is the responsibility of good people to find some humanity when there seems to be none
Comment from : @xmariner

@Calers-gu1ib
No social media nor TV, limiting outside radio so people are more isolated than they knew and believed what their leadership told them They had no idea that Hitler didn't have a clue and how England was more than just an Island and America was vast beyond their comprehension

@Theearthtraveler
More self righteous rhetoric from people who blindly worshipped a psychopath

My mother grew up in New York city She told me they saw Italian POW's all the time at Coney Island They were having a wonderful time & every one was treated with kindness by the Americans Why does it take a war for us to see & recognise our common humanity?

I had a neighbor who was a German POW during the World War After the war, when he was back in Germany, he married his sweetheart and turned around and settled in the USA So I don't believe he suffered too much, because he chose to come back!

@sanghoonlee5171
I had no idea German POWs were shipped all the way to America What was the rationale for doing this? Was it because it's simply easier to maintain a POW camp away from combat zone?

What a terrible idea I hope this is blocked Most older people usually still use cash I don't like the idea of them tracking every cent and I like being able to help the poor and homeless and kids that do odd jobs to save for college There are many poorer people that don't even have a bank account

My french grandfather was a war prisoner in Germany the whole warbrIn camp his big mouth got in beaten, lost half a lung and was sent recuperating as a worker in a bavarian farmbrThose were nice folk that treated him well and never considered him a prisonerbrWhen he came back his wife was pregnantbrMy grandmother was the next wife 😅brLot of grey areas in war

rope ladders around the little steamer how dangerous is that? it wouldn't matter whether the ship is marked with a red cross the german uboats will still blow them out of the water

@GrayNeko
My Mother used to tell a story about the German POW camp outside her hometown in East Texas She said her aunt and mother used to go out and have picnics to watch the POW's work, claiming, 'These are the SOB's that are getting all of our butter!' ^_ My father, from that same town, told a story about being a boy in his father's very fancy car when a truck full of German POW's turned up and were allowed out for a restroom break They gathered around his father's car to inspect the engine Scared him to death! ^_

@markmccullough5873
After reading the comments I wonder why my grandfather never got any German POWs to work his coal mines in Tennessee when the workers went on strike right in the middle of WWII Maybe because my grandmother was Dutch?
Comment from : @markmccullough5873

@jmhoug
Vastly different treatment than the Allied POWs received

@igottaspeak
"Here the negro is nothing" to quote Private James Pritchard in a letter written from Camp Livingston in Louisiana 1944 White German prisoners were treated better than they were while held captive during the war Letters were written to many including the White House We now that Hitler used American white supremacy as a model for extermination of people of color in Germany Lets not have another Florida type scrubbing of history (Quote from Matthias Reiss is Senior Lecturer in History at the University of Exeter, England brPDF)
Comment from : @igottaspeak

@gew9487
Hannibal Missouri had a POW camp The camp was placed behind stone walls It had a beautiful stone gate entrance The facility is still there Saw it on a tour of Hannibal After POWs were returned the camp became a ball field It was interesting to see!!
Comment from : @gew9487

@gew9487
Crossville TN had a POW camp There's a small museum that tells the history Local citizens would have a weekly social hour for prisoners Ladies would bake cakes Prisoners were paid to work on local farms Americans treated POWs much more humanly than our enemies treated Allied POWs Many German POWs returned to the US after the War because of the kindness they received while POWs

There was also a Italian POW camp at what is now Warren AFB in Cheyenne There is a carefully tended military cemetary out at the base were Italian POW's who died are buried Each year a representative from the Italian diplomatic service visits these graves to do honors to them Some of them were paroled into the Italian community in Cheyenne,

My mother Maxine Swartz told me that her father and mother hosted German POWs during the war She worked side by side with them on the farm, and one became part of the family to the point that he cried when he found out he had to go back to Germany after the war was over

Hard to believe as an American and if our government gets this war we are so desperate to start That this time we will be the enemy of the world that will be extinguished in the end And 80 years in the future someone will be listening to to an American boys story of being transported to a camp in some unknown location

@dond5536
I was born in 1937 I lived with my grandparents on a farm in Tennessee In 1943-44 a former American training camp in Tullahoma Tennessee was converted to a German POW camp Since most able bodied men were in the armed forces, farmers could hire the pow's on a daily basis to help with harvests We used the pow's numerous times and at age 7 I was the water boy I carried the water bucket with one dipper The German word for water was vasser (and since they had been demonized to all children) i was terrified but ran with the bucket when I was called I was of Irish descent and therefore was blond headed and blue eyed The prisoners made a big deal out of my appearance It scared me to death but one of the GI guards spoke German and assured me that they were complimenting my appearance as being like their own They were very kind and always thanked me after I carried the water to them I soon found out that only ordinary people suffer from war The older politicians who start them rarely ever do I am now 86 and a veteran of the USAF 1955-1959

@cissiepierce664
The complaint about the lack of a Red Cross flag is a petty deception as Hitler had ordered unrestricted warfare on ALL trans Atlantic shipping, thus the need for zig zagging across the Atlantic To say that America had been unaffected by the war is insulting considering the loss of American lives!

My family history might interest someone My grandfather and his brothers all fought for Germany in WW2 I joined the USAF in 1984 and was assigned to an air station in Wiesbaden, 1985 - 1987 I had to learn German to hear all the war stories and family hardships because of WW2 Nobody was pro-Nazi, but all were glad the war was past and they had survived They also cried for the loved ones and friends who were lost in the war Starvation, sickness, and death spares no one during such times My German relatives and their friends loved me as family and never took issue with politics I was born first generation American but will always be German at heart Most Americans will never know the personal horrors of war in their home town or neighborhood as my family had seen😮 Nations may win wars and glory in victory, but people ALWAYS lose in those same wars My family's scars will never be healed nor forgotten

I think Ukraine should send their Russian POW's here They won't want to go back, and even they do, they will not be motivated to fight; and will likely just surrender again I bet even our prisons are better than their average civilian lifestyle

@tamatoa8261
Isn't it ironic that Americans treated the German POW's, our enemy better than they treated Americans such as blacks, Asians and Hispanics? Just because the Germans were white So if you think about it, America was fighting a war against a country that had the same ideals Many of the American minorities were bona fide war hero's, yet got treated like dirt when they returned to their country
Comment from : @tamatoa8261

@tommychew6544
Very good, all stories should be told Tell the one about many German prisoners wanted to come back after the war I saw such a story told and it was also a very good one

@SrpskoNightmare
There was a POW Camp in Fredericksburg TX that housed many German soldiers After the war the Prisoners were given a choice to go home or stay Many stayed and opened up shops and restaurants in the area some still operating to this day The POWs were amazed to find Germans who spoke a Texas dialect of German in the town, and when they asked why a lot of Germans live here? The people replied our ancestors immigrated here over a hundred years ago Much of the Texas hill country and parts of San Antonio are very German Some of the best food and beer ever

You know something is wrong when your country swallows almost the entirety of Europe and your territory is fully connected by land but your soldiers are starving You also have millions and millions of work slaves you are starving to death While your enemy is fighting across the Atlantic and the Pacific ocean after helping supply the resistance for years before entering the war manages to not only give the soldiers enough calories they also get luxuries they opponent hasn't seen in years
