I know this is an older video but to go along with your safety items, I've never seen a boat/off shore channel talk about using Ham radio Yes you have a VHF radio but those are short distance With the proper antennae for Ham radio you can reach across the planet but for a small boat in the middle of the ocean you can at least send that signal multiple more miles that it might save your life Comment from : @memptn01 |
As long as your boat is "unsinkable" the only fear you have is if it flips over Set off the EPeRB and since your painted the bottom bright emergency orange, rescuers can't possibly miss you😃☺😉👍😎 White blends in with the breakers and blue or green is just plain dumb🤨😠 Comment from : @frankjohnson8750 |

Great information I'm getting ready to buy my first serious boat and transition from fresh to salt water I plan to fish the intercoastal and bay to start with I really don't have the desire to fish blue water in a 26 foot bay boat But, I might reach the point when I'm confident enough to fish blue water Comment from : @artisaprimus6306 |
Great video, I would add using the rule of 3rds for fuel and never leave the dock without spare parts and a decent set of tools Comment from : @tonycoleman525 |

Thanks to Life by the Bowone issue I've always had issue with is fuel additives and/or conditioners At most I fish once a week, sometimes once every 2 or 3 weeksprimarily due to weather and running a 170 Montauk offshore of NJ in windy weather which seems to dominate New Jersey's weather pattern especially in the afternoons I have always suffered with fuel separation and issues from that older fuel What has everyone found to be most effective? Comment from : @markchicketano6289 |
Would a Boston whaler 220 dauntless be good to go offshore in Gulf of Mexico ? Comment from : @motexas9092 |

Good common sense I've not spent much time on the saltwater except sailing the San Juans in the PNW but I used to fly Bucking the weather with a bad case of get-home-ites will eventually make you dead I've personally known several pilots that succumbed to that Comment from : @fmh357 |

I boat in the "grave yard of the Atlantic" - off shore in the Carolinas My boat is a 21' CC with a single engine outboard The number one rule is - don't go out too far for the equipment you're running and KNOW the condition of that equipment BEFORE you run it In other words, PRETRIP your boat It's much better to find a fault while your sitting at the dock than 60 miles offshore If you've just bought the boat, go have it professionally inspected by a marina that does both dry land and in water inspections, preferably BEFORE you buy it And remember, every boat can become a submarine Comment from : @thecentralscrutinizerr |

Clay, I'm assuming that you have no problem shutting down your engine while you're offshore? Great video and great advice! (Stupid question: Could your trolling motor and a full complement of batteries bring you back into shore from 25 miles out?) Comment from : @GroundedFlyboy737 |
I would add: Sea Anchor If you lose power and the waves are big, hook your sea anchor to the bow It will orient the boat bow into the waves so you don't take one broadside or over the transom Lightweight and folds up small Comment from : @proaudiohd |
I’ve watched every one of your videos I love the channelbrbrHowever, I’m concerned about your PathfinderbrbrYou have several shots of your engine while cruising I’m seeing a lot of fore/aft movement of your engine It should be rock solid Is the engine missing? Is your transom soft or is the attaching hardware loosebrbrSomething to look at Comment from : @85296jwd |

COMPASS - Invest in a good one (preferably one with illumination) and LEARN how to USE it Electronics fail, lose signals, etc Be knowledgeable in shooting azimuths and tracking Sometimes "old school" is the BEST way Don't put all of your faith in todays technology You are setting yourself up for failure Also EPIRB, EPIRB, EPIRB!!! Comment from : @bunkman64 |

A membership with Sea Tow or Tow boat USA was 12500 when I was fishing an 18 ' McKee Craft off NC was and inexpensive piece of mind insurance Nothing beats common sense and expirience When you get out to your destination always remember your only halfway brWe tried to get out early when the wind was usually calmer and get back in early afternoon before thunderstorms typically develop I fished over 10 years, admit I was scared twice and once was when I didn t listen to that voice in my head during a hot king bite and running in with lightning bolts hitting around was no fun nor joke Never made that mistake again brRemember that can happen at anytime though Comment from : @sammylacks4937 |

The Coast Guard's primary means of communication with the public is via VHF-FM In most places you can still communicate with the CG over 30 miles offshore Out Of Step is correct in redundancy is the key I only spent 27 years in the CG looking for people that didn't make it back to the boat ramp Comment from : @cepaasch |
