llana, I am planning an Alaskan cruise and looking to get some Level 8 luggage Have you ever used the automated carry-on baggage sizer and did your Level 8 carry-on pass I'm only asking because I see that Level 8's carry-on misses the requirements by 2 of an inch, I know it sounds foolish for that small of an amount, I just have never used an automated bagger sizer and I don't know how strict AirCanada is Comment from : Dan Zanauskas |

There is a difference in the Alaskan cruises when you go early in the season as opposed to later in the season Early is still quite chilly and more snow peaks We went in September 2022 and it was warmer and the scenery more green and lush 70’s warm It was sunny but we were told it is usually more rainy Still need the hat and light quilted jacket for glacier days The closer you get to the glacier the chillier it gets Layers is key The hikers are an excellent suggestion Comment from : jackie r |
What is your Dyson? I’ve watched many of your videos and was watching this one because we’re cruising in Alaska in September Dyson hair dryer?? Comment from : Gail Robins |

My husband and I are going on a 3 week land/ cruise tour to Alaska the beginning of August Any differences in packing for such a long trip or should we just rely on the laundry service on board? Comment from : Kaylene Hooper |
My wife and I will be going on our first Alaska cruise next year Your packing techniques and reasoning are super helpful Thank you! I've been researching luggage for a few months, since mine is starting to wear Level 8 was on my short list, and your review and discount code put me over the top I picked up a Voyageur set yesterday Comment from : Jake Johnson |

Planning an Alaskan cruise so thanks for the tips! Comment from : Paul and Carole Love to Travel |
We just completed an Alaska cruise, too The biggest way we cut back on volume was by buying HAL's unlimited laundry package We had about three days traveling and visiting Vancouver before embarkation day, plus another four days after the cruise in Denali and Anchorage With the laundry package, we could do all the pre-cruise laundry right away and also have all fresh clothing at the end of the cruise to cover our land portion My favorite clothing was all comfy -- hoodies, t-shirts, leggings, joggers, a light vest, a fleece jacket A light-weight raincoat that I could wear over the fleece or hoodies came in handy a lot -- mostly as a windbreaker, but also for the one torrential rain period we experienced when disembarking in Whittier I wore my sneakers most of the time, but was glad to have the waterproof hiking shoes for some small hikes and when dog-sledding on a glacier (even though the company also gives you special waterproof boots that completely cover your own shoes) Comment from : Sara |
I just got off my first Alaska cruise 2 days ago We had 2 sunny days (Ketchikan and Juneau) and it rained every other day So definitely plan for rain! However, i packed too many thermals and hats (1 of each would have been sufficient) I also wish i had a pair of comfy slip on shoes that were neither my dressy flats nor my waterproof sneakers for casual ship days I didn't bring enough short sleeve tshirts, but I bought plenty as souvenirs so that worked out nicely 😂 Comment from : Alexandra Macias |
Do you have a link for the black dress Comment from : Shari Mahoney |
We're starting to pack for Alaska in July How much luggage did you take for your husband and yourself? I booked a 40 lb and 50 lb checked luggage and a carry -on I'm thinking of eliminating one piece What do you take on your carry-on? Comment from : Debbie Sorensen |
I roll my clothes too, but I must be doing something wrong because I find that my clothes still wrinkle Comment from : Nancy Bass |
Great video Ilana A lot of sponsored vids get very cheesy and feel “fakeish” when drooling over the product We’ve seen you multiple times with the Level 8 luggage, and you do an awesome job displaying/demonstrating it in a very REAL, believable manner Level 8 would do well to “incorporate” you MORE as a spokeswoman ! Comment from : Bones |
Love your packing techniques Currently shopping for luggage, thanks for the info!! Comment from : Donna Hoffman |
Would it be the same when cruising to Patagonia around mid-March? Comment from : cdel2965 |
You could add Norway fjords, Iceland, etc to this post Comment from : brunkerj |
Did you say Dyson, as in the hair dryer? I have one that I love but it is extremely bulky so just wondering if you have a travel dryer or the Dyson Looked like it was in a bag or packing cube Comment from : tamaletha1 |
‘A hat’ what’s that? I’m 🇨🇦 it’s a toque 😂brAlso, fleece is too bulky and absorbs water A good alternative is wool, cashmere, silk or a combo of those A 2pc set of silk long underwear is super thin and can be worn under anything eliminating all the bulky stuff Comment from : Nothing Personal |
Have you checked out convertible pants? One of the things that surprised me on my Alaska cruise (5/26-6/2) was how warm it was on the ship (Ovation of the seas) Being able to zip off the legs came in handy Comment from : bzed Zachrel |
Nice luggage set! I'm looking forward to our Alaska cruise later this summer Great tips! Comment from : Cathy Over 50 - Petite Plus Size Fashion |
Thank you so much for this video! We leave end of July and I swear I’ve read all of the blog posts but seeing it is very helpful! I do have one question though Under your fleece jackets did you just wear short sleeve tshirts or long sleeves? Comment from : Janira Plude |

I will share a podiatrist tip with you Especially when wearing sneakers or boots, you should alternate between two pairs You wear one pair of sneakers today and a different pair of sneakers tomorrow Giving your first pair of sneakers/boots 24 hours to totally dry out even if they did not get wet from water Simply the moisture from your feet Comment from : Sue Wolf |
Why do the cruise line ask for your credit card? Comment from : Gloria Samchez6 |
Thanks Illana, great advice & packing tips You look lovely in all your outfits In regards to binocularsis there a particular brand you'd recommend? Thanks ❤ Comment from : Lisa Meaney |
Did you need the carry on as well as the large suitcase? I’m leaving tomorrow and while everything fits of the large one, I’m dangerously close to the 50-lb weight limit Comment from : Diane Bucka |
Your presentation is great Ilana This is so helpful Comment from : Keith_Aerotrunk |
Great tips!! My husband and I usually relax most of the day on sea days Comment from : Tamara |
We will be taking an Alaska cruise in 2024 on Holland America The same ship you were in My husband, myself and my adult daughter will be sharing a cabin Not sure if we should just get a balcony room or upgrade to a suite Just to add we have camped together for years, so sharing a small space is fine However this is a once in a lifetime and maybe worth the splurge of a suite Thanks Comment from : Diana A |
Great info! There is so much to see and do in Alaska; and it is much more enjoyable if you go prepared Comment from : OceanRetire |
We just got home from our Alaska Cruise (June 4-11) We packed for the worst and best weather As it turned out, not a single day of rain and temps in the 60's during the day Everyone said this was the most remarkable weather ever Comment from : JimAz |
It'd be nice to see what your husband packed Comment from : haggiskiwi |
I’m fixing to go on my first Alaskan cruise and this was so helpful I’ve got to rethink some of the things I have packed Comment from : Cindy Beatty |
Very informative I am mad about packing cubes but don’t roll dresses Going to rethink that though now Comment from : Philippa Rayner |
I love how you showed everything you took with you! I always stressed about having enough room to pack the clothes that I would need After watching your video, I feel a lot better Also, I purchased the unlimited laundry package from Holland so I can conceivably take less clothes, and just have them washed! Comment from : Connie Moreno |
I thoroughly enjoy your videos brbrI think all you need for jackets are two fleece, one down jacket, and one raincoat All should have hoods Rain pants are nice to have toobrbrAs for shoes I recommend ballet flats, Crocs for the ship, hiking/running shoes for walking around town or excursions, and rain boots because it rains a lot in southeast Alaska Comment from : Lisa N |
I thought the Level8 luggage looked very interesting — until I saw the delivery charges! US$150 for purchase under $200, US$250 for purchases under $300, and up to US$500 for more expensive items If Level8 are ever wondering why they don’t sell much luggage to us constantly-travelling Australians, it’s because any of us who can afford to spend that kind of money for a bag will go for a premium brand, while the rest of us will stick to the affordable name brands we can buy locally Comment from : LA P |
I'm ready for our Alaska cruise in September Being from NY, I have plenty of warm clothes and outer wear I visited Anchorage years ago and it does get cold Comment from : Danette S White |

Layers most important and waterproof jacket & shoes Comment from : Felix Torres |
I got a lightweight fleeced lined Columbia waterproof jacket, which was a great alterative to a puffer jacket, even in the first week of May Wore it over the teeshirt and fleece sweatshirt I did bring thermals which I wore under waterproof (and lightweight) hiking pants I was surprisingly comfortable even in Juneau when it poured the while time (and I was glad of those waterproof hiking boots) I tried the packing cubes, but I clearly need practice to master them as you have! Comment from : hobnobkitkat |
Wow! Mailed renewals on a Tuesday (Priority Express), They Received on Thursday, processing was said to be 10-14 weeks after rcpt We received them by Priority Mail (didn’t pay for fast mail) today, 7 weeks (-1 day) from they received them Comment from : Ron & Donna Brown |
Wow, you kept it simple I like that Probably won't be going till 2025, but will keep this in mind Great video Comment from : Mary Barnum |
As much as I hear and see beautiful pictures and scenery I just can’t do an Alaska cruise! I’m from Chicago and I can’t stand cold weather and all that packing I don’t own a coat as I moved to South Texas 17 yrs ago Maybe when we are older it will appeal to me Comment from : AraceliH |
Yeswe take off on July 29th, and will be ready!!! Comment from : Cassandra Fine |
Real timely! We are leaving mid July I learned a lot Thank you, Comment from : Mimi J |
This was informative, thank you We are on an October Alaskan cruise so layering has been on my mind Leggings are great to use rather than thermals I used to work in a ski resort and even the guys wore pantyhose under their ski wear I bought some compression bags for our bulky items I havent tried them yet but I hope they work out Comment from : Loopymcgeee |
This might be niche, but I'm an amateur photographer I rented a long lens for our AK cruise and was so glad I did I got amazing pics on a whale watching excursion! 🤩 Comment from : Scott DeGasperis |

Thank you I have everything ready to pack for next month's cruise to Alaska , one question and commentbrDo I need to bring a wrap or are the ships kept pretty temperate in the indoor areas Ie Eating areas and restaurants?brI found, sometimes, packing the packing cubes upright vs flat can save a bit of space as well Comment from : Becky Newport |
