There is no bias It has to do with reflective metering It is looking for medium gray of the whole scene If you have dark skin, it lightens it If you have light skin, it darkens it If you use an incident meter, it gives you what you actually have

At least now digital photo technology has a wide dynamic range so it is possible (with some fiddling) to get everyone just right Back in the 1980s when I worked in TV, tech was not so good I remember working on a sitcom with a diverse cast The dynamic range of the cameras was so small that when black and white folks were in the same shot, they never both looked right We eventually figured it out: We changed the white actors' makeup to be a couple of shades darker It didn't make them look weird But it did solve the problem so everyone could look good (within the limitations of 1980s technology)

Its not even a matter of being a cultural thing they arent making lightskinned on purpose as a defualt its apart of the phones auto focus Darker skins absorb a lot more light and getting even lighting in a picture isnt the easiest with a cell phone have you ever taken an instant kodak picture with a black dude next to a honkey The flash gets focused on the black overexposing them and making the rest of the pic look dim

For people saying it's racist, well for one we Chinese are not responsible of black slavery, racial separation or any of those shit so you can't make us feel guilty for liking lighter skin tone And two, frankly all mono-culture countries (that is all east Asian countries) are racists in general simply because people don't like who don't look like them and don't share their culture, doesn't matter whether you are black or white However, this is vastly different from racism in America, again because we don't have the guilt and burden of black history
