This story is so inspiring to me! I'm in my junior year at Barnard now, but spent my first three semesters struggling through the curriculum Seeing this video takes some of the pressure off being the "perfect" applicant, because it’s true: you only need one yes to be an MD Thank you for sharing your story and for being the big doctor sister I didn't know I needed Comment from : Margaux Demuynck-Pisciotta |

I initially intended to enter college as a bio major Within that 2nd year 2016 at age 19, I started my first health care position as a scribe Got my own health insurance and shortly became dx with lupus Nothing but years of blood tests, finding out I had latent TB and secondary disease stuff, needing to see infectious disease, heme, and rhem Depression hits Had to choose between class and health to pay for appts Stop attending 2017, TB treatment done and I start immune suppressants and told by rhuem that med field/health was a no go Didn't listen and went to LVN school (late 2018)while working FT For me this felt like a last chance to be in healrhcare Fam and I got evicted shortly before boards in Feb 2020 Now as a nurse and in my own apartment, I'm trying to get back on premed path after enrolling into Unibr It's difficult My grades dropped during 2020 during that brief time of couch surfing and readjustingbrIt's been real hard but I'm tryingbrbrThank you for sharing your story It really gives me some hope Comment from : j |
As an inspiring doctor, this video made me feel way better about myself Almost all of the videos I've watched had students with perfect grades and perfect MCAT scores so it's refreshing to see how different your path was It's giving me the boost I needed to keep going and never give up even if I'm not a "perfect" student so thank you so much for this video🤍 Comment from : Mandiangu MD |
I just want to say, you’re so inspirational to me I also, one day, hope to be an ER doctor and my grades during the pandemic have dropped so much I thought that I couldnt have the chance to be a doctor But im still in my freshman year of college and your ability to turn your situation around like that really inspired me and made me hopeful again Thank you Comment from : JustYoNormalFangirl |

This made me so happy! (: Comment from : Jessica Quino |

I can relate how it feels to get low gpa and feeling that I am not smart as others brI in my third year in university and I have seen a lot of ups and downs I started with couple F and a D which made me feel miserable however, I kept striving for end goal(getting into med school) and started working more hard than before Thank you for sharing your experience, it’s very helpful Comment from : j j |

This looks very similar to my journey right now, especially having to stay an extra 2-3 semesters because I didn't know what I wanted to do for the first two years of college, I felt really bummed, but seeing someone so inspiring like you sharing such a similar experience put a smile on my face!! Comment from : Blue Marble |
Hi Jamie, don't know if you will answer but going to give it a shot! brI am wondering for that one year you took classes, did enroll in a post-bacc program? Thank you for sharing your story! It made me realize how there’s no “right way” to get into medical school and boosted my morale, as I have gotten senioritis and my academic performance is not up to par with my past performances but I won’t give up I CAN improve Most people have a cookie cutter resume for medical school but it’s refreshing to see others who aren’t “perfect” students or candidates I can really see your passion for medicine and that says a lot Comment from : Lamia Siddiqui |
I needed this Comment from : Kacee Daniels |

Hi, I love your videos, they've always helped center my goals and thoughts towards Med school, could you tell me how many and which courses in science and math you took in general and in what time? (I'd love if you could make a video, but I know you have a busy life😂)brbrPlease, I'd really appreciate it I'm currently juggling through that and would like to know your amount of classes taken brbrKeep striving!!!❤ Comment from : J Acosta |

This video really resonated with me! I am 23 yrs Old and have been in and out of college trying to figure out what I want to do Last year I realized that I wanted to be a psychiatrist, initially this was a really frightening thought and all the people around me were not so supportive of the idea That didn't make much of a difference to me because it's truly my passion and I was blessed with an aptitude for mental health So Im basically starting from scratch at 23 and this video gave me a good level of confidence even though the path was very different! Thank you! Comment from : Peter Seher |
Your GPA out of ? Comment from : Ambitious |

I LOVE hearing stories like this It's a lot more common than people think ! I graduated took a gap year, did a postbacc program at UCI , and was accepted there for next Fall :) in the meantime videos like this are great motivation for the time sacrifice we put in to achieving our dream Comment from : Alexis Destiny |
Did you have to take music hum? If so i hope it didn't bore you! Comment from : MusSonik |
Hi Jamie, thank you for sharing this I also attended a women's college but got a 30 GPA and 28 sGPA! I moved back to NYC and am working as a pharmacy tech/fast food/studying at community college I was wondering what school you took extra courses in and how many classes you felt was enough? How did you plan/manage your post-bac journey (job, classes, MCAT studying, and having productive non-medicine hobbies)? I'm currently supporting myself entirely and feel exhausted after a 40-50 hour week, struggling to keep up with class I've wondered whether PA, NP, or nursing would be better suited for me, esp since the stats are higher for Asian applicants I would appreciate any words of wisdom from anyone! Comment from : sweetbunny128 |
Sorry, what did you Major in at Barnard? Or the local university? Comment from : Hilario Garcia |
How do the classes you take at a local university boost the gpa of Barnard? Isn’t it separate? Comment from : Hilario Garcia |
Hey jamie, i was wondering, how were you able to transfer from one college to another? thank you:) Comment from : Shaffira Annisa |
You’re such an inspiration, Jamie! And not just for aspiring med students I really adore how humble and real you are and how you work hard just to achieve things and not to show off in any way Take care :) Comment from : listeknaslunci |

Hi Jamie! This story was really helpful and encouraging because I have been kinda late to the volunteering and shadowing game, so I was feeling discouraged about my resumes not being good enough or my GPA not being strong enough Thank you! Comment from : iBellamazing |
But everyone who applies gets accepted to only ‘1’ school If that 1 school doesn’t accept you what do you do next? Comment from : Live Bright |
I've been watching your videos for years now and currently on my own very long journey into getting medical school Comment from : Timothy Oluwaremi |
Thank you so much for this video! I too decided I wanted to go to med school my sophomore year of undergrad At first I felt discouraged, because I was not sure if I had the capabilities to raise my semester GPA With this video, I feel that I can do whatever I set my mind to! Thank you! You were the inspiration I needed to continue on the path I chose ❤️ Comment from : Jillian Simpson |
Thank you again Comment from : Deniel Kai Labine |
Thank you for being so vulnerable and honest I think this will help a lot of people understand that you don't have to be perfect and that everyone's journey is different I wish I had these videos when I was in college Comment from : Cindy Cheung |
If you were black with the same GPA these comments would be full of people claiming that your GPA was too low and the only reason you got into med school was because you were black brbrI know this because I had the EXACT same GPA and MCAT as you , didn’t get into until my second try - but was still told by several classmates that I didn’t deserve it or it was easier for me to get in because I’m black 🙃brbrAnd the hilarious part is there’s only 5 black people in my cohort Out of 99 !! But STILL somehow I didn’t deserve it and stole the spot from a “smarter” Asian or white personbrbrNot even trying to be a downer but it’s annoying that you constantly have to prove yourself to people who do know your scores, don’t know the stats and don’t know who AA actually benefits Comment from : K B |
It really sucks how B’s bring down your cumulative GPA Basically anything besides all A’s makes your GPA go down rather than up I only got three C’s in my whole college career and my graduating GPA was a 33 I also had to take some extra science classes at a community college to help my science GPA It’s ridiculous how difficult they make it to keep up your GPA Comment from : Dori Shaw |
This video is really inspiring I started my freshmen year of university well, but did terrible my second year in classes like General Chemistry and Biology I retook those classes 4 times I feel like such an idiot My third year of college I did great and passed both classes I struggled with I hope my next two years to stay on a straight path and do great on all my classes Thanks for the video!! Comment from : Adji Ba |
Interesting! Congrats! Comment from : Elizabeth Ortega |
thank you for this video Comment from : Qudsia |
You got in for diversity reasons, plain and simple Congrats, I'm sure your parents are proud of you that better applicants were rejected because we 'need more women in the medical field' Comment from : Jeremy Mailsack |

I got my first C just this last semester (albeit every other class was an A) and it crushed me My GPA is still around a 38, but I felt like it was a brick wall Im currently taking summer classes (switched majors one semester in so just taking a few in the summer to catch up) and overall it has been a good experience This video has reminded me to keep on going even if you have a bad semester Thank you for sharing your story, you are truly an inspiration One day, when I get my MD, I hope to share my story with others to help encourage and inspire others just as you do :) Comment from : SilentEagle2029 |

I don’t usually comment on YouTube videos but I just wanted to say thanks for sharing your story :) I’m now starting my 4th year but I also had a similar journey in getting into med school and felt insecure during my first two years with the non-traditional path I took Seeing a lot of my peers come straight through from undergrad made it seem a bit taboo to share my “not so perfect” story, but I’ve come to realize everyone has their own unique journey and there isn’t one right waybrbrCongrats on finishing intern year and good luck with the rest of residency! I look forward to your next video :) Comment from : Joanne Moon |
