It doesnt really matter how visible that you are Many drivers are on their phones not paying attention and NOOOOO , The bike boxes are suicide in the city and clearly someone who is not a cyclist invented that lol Comment from : Travis Goes There |

Thanks for this video, cuz here in bengaluru, india, you rarely find people who follow all traffic rules appropriately, and its important to be more aware and have more traffic negotiation sense than in most other countries, and we also don't have any bike lanes in most of the city Maybe you could make a video on how to go viking in the city when there's no viking lanes Much appreciated Comment from : Sathwik S A |

Why do you do these videos using cycles that are not road legal as they don't meet construction and use regulations- hardly a good thing to show beginners when you are talking about safetybrYou also say that" running red lights is dangerous and is a reason that motorists may not like us" you forget to mention it is a criminal offencebrWould it not be an idea to recommend that all potential cyclists should study and understand the highway code before going out on the road in the uk? If riding in other countries it is advisable to know their road laws as they may differ from the uk- much as any motorist does when driving abroad Not knowing the rules doesnt stop you getting a fine Comment from : winnie6354 |

Why wouldn’t you wear a helmet in Holland? Comment from : Iam Barks |
I'm really nervous about starting, do u have any tips as to how to get over that? Comment from : W1LL1AMTV |
Confidence is the #1 best point when it comes to safety The confidence to move into and take the middle lane when turning right (in uk, left in us) and to move into the middle section when crossing at a junction makes cycling much much safer Squeezing yourself to the edge of the lane will just make cars pass you even closer and make those awkward turns even harder Also, never ever break traffic laws (stop at red lights and zebra crossings) Amount of time you make up rarely makes a difference and makes us all look bad Comment from : joseph mullan |
Depending on the location riding 2 abreast is not allowed and you can end up with a ticket Riding one after another in a single file is polite and a much safer option for the city Comment from : Diana |
What’s that front and rear lights with camera? Comment from : riki mambo |
Advice I would like to give is stay predictable Predictable traffic causes less accidents, don't give way to drivers etc if you have the right of way, and don't feel pressured to move out a junction just because someone signals you Comment from : Scott Hume |

Hi guys, I am a 4th-year student studying at the University of British Columbia Currently, my team and I are working on a project about making a safety helmet that can detect cars for bike riders We are still under the market research stage, we will appreciate it if you can take this survey and provide us some feedbacks Thank you very much! Riding two abreast ? Great example! Rather strange given they’re all about road safety Otherwise, an informative video Comment from : Mark |
In major USA cities seems pedestrians have the blegal/b right of way on sidewalks And seems to me it bshould/b be that way But i have found some pedestrians actually respond to bike bells, whistles, horns or other sound emitting warning devices with bhostility/b and outright defiance What is it with folks ??? Life really that miserable for them ??? They bdon't/b want to cooperate WTF ???? Comment from : quaz imodo |

Trying to come back to city cycling after a few bad experiences In my country traffic is crazy and bikers are treated with low to zero respect I have been hitted by a bus once when I was standing on the right side of the lane on a closed sign Anyway, I watched this video trying to get a little bit more secure about the journey I want to do today Hopefully it will work Comment from : Stenio Zimer |

Once I rode a bike on the roundabout with traffic lights I confidently sticked to the middle of my lane and kept up my speed with cars It was a middle lane, because I was going straight through the roundabout And than an idiot motorist (on my left) rolls through the red light and honks on me because I dared to be there I replied courteously: FECK OFF, IM IN MY LANE! A moment later, passed the roundabout, he slows down and tries to educate me: you are on the roundabout The courtesy my arse! Comment from : pafnucek |

Half the bikers should just get off the busy city roads, pollution, traffic, bad weather, find a track or lane ;) Comment from : PazLeBon |

Great video- you can use google maps to plan a route but how do you use it while you are cycling? Ie are you meant to stop at every turning and check your phone? Comment from : Mark Budd |
Phone zombies, haha haha, they do walk among us Comment from : miguel ortiz |
Regarding the front light: PLEASE AIM IT DOWN and NOT STRAIGHT ON It blinds oncoming traffic in low light situations It's the equivalent of driving a car with the HIGH BEAMS on Horrible for the safety of others Comment from : Jeremy Sweeten |
I don't know how it is in England or the rest of Europe, but my fellow cyclists in the US absolutely REFUSE to announce their approach from behind to anyone They simply fly by and scare the hell out of everyone they pass No regard for slower traffic, children learning how to ride, or the elderly Sad and infuriating Comment from : Jeremy Sweeten |
Nice intro video! Some bike lights can be obnoxiously bright if not angled down You will temporality blind other riders on bike paths with a Fly CE6 on high beam brAs an NYC rider my continual focus is on: 1) not getting doored (looking to see if there are people in the “parked” cars”) 2) cars pulling out from curbs and 3) not getting right hooked at intersections Comment from : lindsay mcrory |
Well guys, though even Los Angeles has a river, you don't wanna pop down to it for an ice cream Comment from : William Robison |
I always yell « on your leeeft » (I live in France so I have to add « poussez vous s’il vous plaît ») because the pedestrians never react to the bell brbrBeen bike commuting for 5 months now, very instructive video for us newbies Comment from : Khadi I |
Blimey Si, that’s a massive backpack !! Comment from : Khadi I |
Proper courtesy is a thing folks need for sure Walking the other day, and some genius was riding on the sidewalk and had the audacity to yell at me to get out of the middle of the crosswalk or I'll get hit Comment from : NordWolf Media |
I'd feel safe and confident if I got to ride around with Chris and those amazing legs The guy rocks a turtle neck and shorts and still looks good, how is that even possible Not so much a video about cycling as it is just Chris posing in various different transitional segments between riding a bike Not complaining, just observing Comment from : Iain Marshall |
You guys forgot to mention your great huge bulging muscles Show-offs Comment from : Grunchy |
even if you do lock your bike there is a chance it won't be there if you don't do it properly Q another GCN video from the old days with Dan (pretty sure he did one on that) Comment from : alexdj40 |
What's with the dark colored (sorry, coloured) clothes? Even more valuable when commuting than on our training rides on quiet roads, we need to wear bright clothes to help improve visibility Yes, reflecting material is great, but even during days, why talk only about running lights and ignore the simple measure of bright patches or even dayglow jackets? Comment from : Rob MacLeod |
As a 'Duchie' the video is alien, but interesting to see the different perspective Might be fun to shoot a video like this in a cycling country like the netherlands or Denmark or so And a heads up: Amsterdam is far from the most cycling friendly city in the Netherlands Comment from : Gideon |
Bell great, but a small mirror on your bars is the best safety accessory you can have IMHO I have one on my commute and my road bikes and they have saved me at least 3 times from what could have been a serious near miss or incidents, even more important with Electric cars creeping up on you!br wwwwigglecouk/zefal-spin-mirror-1/br wwwcateyecom/intl/products/accessories/BM-45/ Comment from : AberHangie |
I found that bike lanes are usually rougher Comment from : znicho |
Cycling in traffic can be very dangerous My main problem was riding on a crosswalk with a bike, which drivers aren't expecting So better to get off bike if switching to sidewalk or crosswalks, in busy areasbrAlso helmet mirror is very helpful brMy reflexes have saved me from getting hit by cars multiple times, so sometimes even as a very defensive rider you can have close calls Comment from : jbarkerhill92 |
here it woud be against the law to ride side by side on street Comment from : burkaanc |
You mostly said the things I also tell my friends, who only use their bikes for commuting Until this day I wasn't really successful, but maybe your video will help Shared! Comment from : Domestik |
With so many videos on YouTube about British road rage against cyclist, what is your opinion truly of the typical British car driver? Comment from : Life, not as the crow flies |
Great video keep them coming real cycling for real people, how about a Brompton review, best city bikes ? Comment from : Paul Percival |
As bicyclist I have 2 or 3 and or am looking to add one more bicycle to the stable I would like to know about the presenters everyday bikes? The bikes shown in this video as well as the ones you personally have that are not used for training and racing? Comment from : jirdesteva |
Not sure why there are so many people whining about the video being too basic when it is titled "Basics of City Cycling" I for one am used to riding on back roads and trails and am going to start commuting to work, so this video was interesting to me Comment from : caveman123ization |
Really helpful video! Please can we see a video asking the team what their favourite routes around the UK are? And will any GCN folk be doing the next London to Brighton ride? Comment from : Ben Dolby |
I love the fact the small blonde lady shopping for plants on her town bike is a world champion at going bloody fast! Comment from : Omar Din |
Liking this series Comment from : trench05 |
And my fourth and last pointbrbrThank you @GCN - Even with all the criticism I have mad respect for your work and do enjoy to watch the show and find that you all do your best to make it worth whilebrbrGracias, merci und bis zum nächsten Mal Arividerci (For all you blokes: Ask Emma, she will get it) Comment from : bau m haus |
Third point would be to ask you: could you make it a thing at GCN to look for the sources of worries, anger and danger for cyclists and use your popularity to publish those Like for example dangerous traffic situations, bad laws or police that harrasses cyclists instead of controling speed and dangerous overtakings of cars etc brbrYou could for example make it some part of the GCN show to rate the worst and the best policy changes etc?brbrAfter all i feel GCN is a bit a part of us all by now and that would be a great way to use it as a platform for lobbying for a safer, better and nicer cycling environment Comment from : bau m haus |
My second point would be that it is right to urge sporty cyclists to use their helmets But aswell as that i would like to see GCN taking an aim at obligations to use helmets by law Several studies have concluded (Contact ADFC, german cyclists association for further information) that mostly such an obligation would keep more people from cycling than making people safer on the road And as we all know the best means to make cycling safer is by getting more people to use their bikes Further more i don't think a helmet would make people much safer that don't usually go fast or near highly frequented roads Comment from : bau m haus |
