I think people think I have a vendetta of some sort, but I want to assure you that if Philips reversed this decision tomorrow and started releasing sensibly priced products my tune would immediately change They make some awesome stuff, but now it's not just at a premium, it's at the cost of acceptable business practice Do me a favour and help spread the word, just liking the video will help, but if you can share it on social media even better This has to stop! In the mean time, you can vote with your feet by buying any of the below products, I will earn commission at no cost to you on any of these purchasesbrbrbrBUY THE PHILIPS HUE REMOTE TO PAIR YOUR BULBS TO OTHER PROVIDERS:brUK: amznto/2q7cnRPbrUS: amznto/33rhN8fbrbrSMARTBULBS RGB (WORKS WITH HUE AND ALL OTHER ZIGBEE HUBS):brUK: amznto/2oC4IdJbrUS: amznto/2IItfofbrbrZIGBEE LED STRIP (WORKS WITH HUE AND ALL OTHER ZIGBEE HUBS):brUK: amznto/2IIsSdlbrUS: amznto/2MwvrQXbrbrZIGBEE PLUG SOCKET (WORKS WITH HUE AND ALL OTHER ZIGBEE HUBS):brUK: amznto/2oyfB06brUS: amznto/322VNAtbrbrRETRO FILAMENT STYLE SMART BULB:brUK: amznto/2OE1eCbbrUS: Not yet availablebrbrGU10 SMART BULBS IN WHITE (WORKS WITH HUE AND ALL OTHER ZIGBEE HUBS):brUK: amznto/2OzwNwSbrUS: Not yet availablebrbrGU10 SMART BULBS IN TUNABLE WHITE (WORKS WITH HUE AND ALL OTHER ZIGBEE HUBS):brUK: amznto/2MuNwyEbrUS: Not yet availablebrbrGU10 RGB COLOUR SMART BULBS (WORKS WITH HUE AND ALL OTHER ZIGBEE HUBS):brUK: amznto/2M7LAxdbrUS: amznto/33qSofgbrbrbrHUBSbrbrSMARTTHINGS STARTER KIT:brUK: amznto/33nNY8EbrUS: amznto/2VCREkubrbrHUBITAT:brGLOBAL: hubitatcom/br hubitatcom/brbrIKEA (I'm not a big fan of this because it's software is pants, but it is flipping cheap)brGLOBAL: wwwikeacom/gb/en/p/tradfri-brbrVINTAGE DESK LAMPS USED IN THIS VIDEO: brUK: amznto/2JwcEUjbrUS: amznto/2L3XhFO

Hi Paul, I own 1st gen Philips hue bulbs (and the 1st gen Bridge) Can I use them with my Alexa or should I buy the Philips Hue Remote control as mentioned in your video? Also, should I buy a new bridge as well or the remote itself is the only gadget I will need to pair my bulbs with Alexa? Thanks
Comment from : Diego Orenstein

I personally just hate the fact you just look for negatives in the Philips systems all the times brbrPhilips Hue is the only company products i can get crazzy cheap during the sale even cheaper than LIFXbrbrbrPersonally never bought gen 1 hub brbrI will go ahead and buy philips in future too, they have ZIBGEE, and one of the Brightest WHITES in the market
Comment from : Div

AY
I am annoyed my v1 bridge died so i bought v2 Now the bulbs don’t even connect

Comment from : Jon Murphy

Grant Ephross
I think the title could be a little less click baity and specify its for hub gen 1 brbrGood tips on pairing the bulbs with other zigbee hubs though! nice to know i have an alternative if there is planned obsolescence for my gen 2 hub at some point

Lunchos El Maximus
I couldn't care less Gen 2 hubs are readily available second hand(due to kits often being cheaper than individual bulbs) for less than half retail So basically $5 a year brbrWho cares brbrNot to mention there may be a legitimate hardware issue that won't work with soon to be released product etc You have NO idea why they're discontinuing it(just because function is the same, does not mean hardware is the same) Could be a security flaw or other issue they are giving customers months to replace a cheap hub brbrNah just rant about it knowing nothing because you are frustrated they aren't supporting a hub you probably aren't even using anymore anyway
Comment from : Lunchos El Maximus

Joe Augier
I've been getting into home automation recently and been building my own led controllers and all sorts I've watched a lot of videos on home automation and yours has just come up I too hate Philips as a company I've had 2 phillips items break in the last 10 years both within the warranty period and in both cases they refused to honour the warrantybrI just bought a new TV and was honestly toying with getting a Philips TV for the ambilight I just couldn't do it and after seeing this I'm glad I haven't as I wanted to integrate it into my home assistant Thanks for the interesting videos
Comment from : Joe Augier

one legged wonder
I just upgraded to the new Philips hub the first gen hub only cost £250 from eBay and it's lasted me 4 years and it's looking like the 2nd gen Hub is only gonna cost £15 so it's not too bad as I got the most out of my £250 lol
Comment from : one legged wonder

andy smith
Most of the mobile phone manufacturers do this Apple for one drives ya nuts
Comment from : andy smith

Josh Bacon
Why is Philips even doing this?!
Comment from : Josh Bacon

Stuee
Isn't it just easier and much much cheaper to turn your lights off the old fashioned way, instead of going the "home automation" route It is hardly like we are all bed ridden and have disabilitiesbrHow impressed are people by this stuff really? br When leaving a room, flick a light switch You don't have to pair your finger or connect it to a network, or worry that the Chinese company that made yiur brain is going to go bust so it will never work anymoreor rant at a YouTube guy for making a video, you just you know flick a light switch on the way out of the room
Comment from : Stuee

John Lightfoot
Are you real or are you a mechbot, look at your eyes, they are not real, cyber implants maybe and rather scary I have heard of circles under the eyes but glowing ones in the eyes Did Philips make you ?
Comment from : John Lightfoot

Icid
I got a Smart Bulb from Hama
Comment from : Icid

John Dykes
I understand your anger Paul but maybe it's got something to do with their new hardware such as the Philips Hue sync box I think it's the most logical reason why they're doing this because it needs the 2nd gen Bridge to work it can't work off the Gen 1 Bridge
Comment from : John Dykes

I have a better idea Instead of voting with your feet, vote with your wallet (I'm sure it's just a British thing I just wanted to add a comment to help with your YouTube standing)

I'm thinking about buying a smartthings starter kit but for some reason the £83 from your link from UK in Amazon Spain is 183€ way to expensive! does anyone knows if I could have any problem for buying it in UK and using it in Spain?
Comment from : Daniel Robles

Ed19601
In defense of Philips I need to set the record straight a bit Philips sold Philips Lighting several years ago to Chinese company Siignify Initially Philips retained 41 of shares, later reducing that to 17brSept 23 2019 the remaining shares were sold to Signify The name Philips Lighting already had been changed to Signify in May 2018 but the name Philips Hue was kept as a trademarkbrThe decision to drop 3rd party support was taken after Sept 23, thus was not a Philips Eindhoven decision but a fully fledged Signify decision Signify, though apparently chinese capital (through Varova investments), has french board and is registered at the Paris stockmarket

Eric Geer
I 100 agree with you I don’t support products with planned obsolescence Im having a difficult time with buying the next-gen iPhone because i know they will ruin it with a bad ios in two years so that i have to buy a new one I guess I’m buying a Pixel instead
Comment from : Eric Geer

Peter Powis
thanks for info Paulhow could anyone not like you?? you're adorable!!brI have Lifx colour bulbs (only 3 of them as they are so expensive!!) but I love the colours - I researched before I bought them that they are superior to Phillips bulbs I do have lots of amazon echos in the house and I wish Amazon would bring out their own smart bulbs at a cheaper price - after watching your video I will never be tempted to buy a Phillips Hue bulb :)

Wow See I was conned into getting a gen2 hub because I found a starter kit for cheaper than just the 3 bulbs I needed, but like you said there was nothing wrong with the gen 1 hub It doesn’t do anything different or get wider range It’s just a different shape I now feel bad for the person that bought my gen1 hub off me for $10
Comment from : BenderTube

Luckily in my country we would be protected by the consumers guarantee act if the product no longer works as intended you can return it for full refund

I love your videos, cruel!! I have Philips Hue but also think their products are expensive so I try to find guides and buy others that I connect to their hub

Unfortunately Philips Poo have very poor customer service My Poo hub 2nd Gen locks me out about one a month and requires a complete Poo factory reset You can still see it via its IP address on the home network, but can't get the app to connect to it Philips have no idea why I returned a hub and the replacement does the same thing They obviously didn't do any diagnostics of the returned device and just sent out a replacement I'm told that Poo doesn't like to work on home networks Great I'll just stop using thousands of £s other home automation systems in my home and just use Philips Poo They are so incompetent that they won't create a cloud or app based backup, so setup of 25 lights takes a while following each of the fun resets and that's before I have to reprogram Echo! Not good Bring on the next 20 Poo updates that most likely won't resolve the issues!

Patrick Lonski
Phillips Hue is NOT A GREAT PRODUCT Can anyone honestly tell me that the routines actually work all of the time Mine never do I wasted hundreds of dollars on very expensive colored light bulbs I thought I was buying lights that would turn off and one while I was away from home They never do this
Comment from : Patrick Lonski

Jack Schrier
Philips is a Dutch company and there are only two things I can't stand in this world; People who are intolerant of other peoples cultures, and the Dutch
Comment from : Jack Schrier

WelshTony1
I completely agree with you on this video I got 6 hue bulbs currently and only them for Hue, I will not be buying another Hue product not unless it's stupidly cheap (side note that was the only reason I bought the 6 I got already haha)

hitardo
I agree with youbrAnd that is why I never have bought Philips Hue productsbrbrbrPhilips, in my opinion, is charging a lot of money for their productsbrAnd now, they are stripping away supportbrSo, what is their advantage?brRight now, NONE!brbrbrThus, for me, Philips Hue is to ignorebrbrbrTo be clear: I own many Philips products: my 4k television, hair trimmer, toaster, etcbrBut Hue products I will not purchase

Em Salsa
Aaaaah yes Good ol' outmoding to the benefit of a corporation and to the detriment of the customers (and planet-landfills will be loaded)
Comment from : Em Salsa

Aerial_Wonders
Maybe that's why you have to bring the hub near to the LED strip to add it
Comment from : Aerial_Wonders

Hans Houbraken
Paul, can you make a howto to connect the phiips Hue to other systems?
Comment from : Hans Houbraken

Anthrox
Video seems to be YouTube drama sorry but anyone getting into a V1 product in 2012 there going to be some problems IOT device are still very new market and manufacture depended on chips that might not have long term support if the chips in the hue bridge V1 have no more software support from the chip maker They can't guarantee a secure product they aren't saying the bridge won't work just online service won't work I think hue as done a amazing job in 2012 Alexa & Google assistant wasn't even a service these are all features they added to a product at no costbrbrI assume this guy still want is analogue tv working also
Comment from : Anthrox

Chris K
Looks like you found the answer If the product has a problem it should be recalled, fixed, or replaced!!!
Comment from : Chris K

Matthias W
I fail to see the problem? They are killing of cloud support The hub will still work on the local network You won't get new features and updates but it will work Using a VPN you can even still switch on the lights remotely
Comment from : Matthias W

insomnium
I was considering it because I have a Hue TV and I would really love to sync the video with the bulbs for a more immersive experience Philips seems to be the only company out there that offers this, or am I bad at Googling? Any tips of how to do this without wasting money on Philips Hue?
Comment from : insomnium

yaynative
Phillips Hue can't keep releasing security updates for the gen1 hub forever so this is a move to get people on to something more secure

Comment from : Kevyn Watkins

Paul
I really have no problem at all with my Philips hue I got the new one years ago the old one can be thrown away I don't care the whole Philips Hue system works really well apart from being expensive, but you know that when you buy into the system
Comment from : Paul

William L Robinson
So what do you think about the Philips Hue play HDMI that's coming soon is there another alternative to lighting up the back of your TV
Comment from : William L Robinson

Nek Lamp
Really? The philips hue owners don't get that you are not against them? Really????????
Comment from : Nek Lamp

Nice one or not so nice from Philips Hue
Comment from : ElectroSwingable

Eric Morales
I agree with Paul, for comparison Samsung still supports the SmartThings gen 1 hub and they are now on gen 3 I actually still own and run the gen 1 hub with no issues I even email Samsung support on occasion and they always provide me with support regardless of the gen hub I am running
Comment from : Eric Morales

Bob Moran
Homeassistant hue emulation No Philips hub no cloud required Problem solved
Comment from : Bob Moran

Adam Billings
Hi Paul, great video I like the idea of the ambient light system like the hue I haven't bought anything yet as been watching all the review videos so what system would you recommend if you was buying from scratch?
Comment from : Adam Billings

Nucks4Cup
It might be worse than what your saying I've now read their end of life policy, and it states support with their own app CAN also be discontinued after 3 years That would mean, if they ever decide to make a major change to the app, v1 would not be upgraded to match, thus you would lose the ability to connect to v1 through your phone as well This is not the case currently, but it could be one day This is the reason why many people do not trust ANY company that requires the cloud to run their smart home devices Google did this with Nest, and now we have this issue with Hue
Comment from : Nucks4Cup

charmanr
Absolutely agree with you, Paul I bought a starter kit very early on, and loved it, but when cheaper competition became available I said I wouldn't buy from them any more However, I did receive another starter kit as a gift and it came with the gen 2 hub, so the changes will not immediately affect me when they happen This action by Philips does make me even more determined to not buy from them in the future though as it sets a dangerous precedent Not only are they making good hardware useless for their profit, they are creating e-waste We are already drowning in waste as it is
Comment from : charmanr

skoat
Hypocrite man I wish this video was more facts and less opinions and misleading clickbait Go figure tech that's years old is being replaced
