A common mistake all experienced pilots do is that they devide the altitude by 3 like u did which is an APPROXIMATION and will lead u to being too low at the end ( not a big problem ofc but it is a one if ure aiming not to level off or spool up ur engine in the end of ur descent) correct formula and most accurate is simply multiply your altitude by 3 4:27

Surely the FMS will take care of these calculations if flying a sophisticated aircraft If not, I using the ground speed/vertical speed/distance and altitude numbers will do very well The key to using pencil lead is to start the calc's early (as in pre-flight)

Joe, great explanation but would a 747 descend at 1000fpm on idle power? I would guess the engines would need to spool up to keep a minimum speed depending on the segment, would they not? I would imagine to maintain speed vs descent rate vs idle power you'd probably need a descent rate closer to the 1,500 to 2,000 fpm range?
