Tom Clemens, Professor Tom Clemens is a man I will remember, and be thankful for having met, all the days of my lifebrI was serving 20 years in the most violent prison in the state of Maryland The Prof came into the prison and taught an American history course He did far more than that He inspired me and many othersbrHe took on extra duties of supplying individual Civil War course tutorials Tom reenacted and taught civil war on the streetbrI was eventually released after earning a Bachelors Degree and I started reenacting the civil war too I worked in the movie Gettysburg and I attended the reenactments of Antietam there at the Antietam park We camped out and performed for the public speaking to those who ventured through our camp My life was one of crime before I met Professor Clemens, after I have never broken a law

McClellan always overestimated the strength of the enemy which was why he never won an important battle A good administrator he should never have been given command of an army although his draw at Antietam allowed Lincoln to make the Emancipation Proclamation which meant that Britain would never support the Confederacy Arguably, the Battle of the Anteitam was the day when Germany lost the First World War

I had 3 ancestors that fought at Antietam 7th West Virginia, 19th Indiana, and a Louisiana Tiger One would be killed at Bloody Lane, one would be reported as missing, and one would survive this battle only to be killed in action on the first day at Gettysburg

I started reading about the history of the Civil War at 10 60yrs later I'm still learning However, even knowing the difference between the caliber of North and South soldiers, just how better prepared they were in terms of solely skills, the story of McCellan at Antietam never fails to raise my ire Everything being equal, his mistakes were so egregious as to ensure defeat

Good radio-style presentation, but the visuals leave a lot to be desired, often not relating directly to the commentary at any given momemtbrbrI leave nearly next door to the Antietam battlefield; it is a wonderfully peaceful, quiet place to walk, unencumbered by the litter of monuments and large numbers of tourists one sees at Gettysburg and other more popular civil war battlefields So the bloodiest day in American history becomes, under the excellent stewardship of the National Park Service, a place suited to contemplation
