@FatherFish I'm definitely an amateur to the FW world, and I'm looking to set my first tank in in long time I really like the idea of this method but I have one question I live in a place that sees all seasons, meaning we get cold winters for sure In this case, I should definitely be getting a heater for the tank and not just rely on bacteria and stuff, correct? Comment from : Marcus Bailey |
|
I absolutely love this approach I have always been a fan of the enclosure / tank being a little piece of nature that we can watch I am in the process of planning out a few tanks In one, I would like to house an axolotl, but like turtles, they can be a little bit taxing on a conventional setup - even a bioactive one Do you have any advice on that? Comment from : Jeff Burow |

I have no plans to set up an aquarium but I thoroughly enjoyed this video, from an ecological perspective Absolutely fascinating and everything made sense Why do we continuously fight nature by complicating things, rather than observing the systems that have worked so well for millions of years? Thank you ❤ Comment from : Grace Axisa |

I will admit I am part of the perfectly clean tank group , I run 2 filters on my 55 gal and do weekly 50 changes but I’ve got to back down a bit because the few plants I have aren’t doing well even with adding fertilizer and lots of light so the 10 nitrate level is apparently too low for swords Comment from : mike smith |
|
My silver dollars don’t eat my Amazon swords , now my big tank has no plants because I have a Severn and they hate plants Comment from : mike smith |

I went down to our local lake call Lake Ronkonkoma on Long Island and we went into the body of water and we grab the sand across from the lake is a pond call lily pond it’s huge and I grab the water from that and that’s what I used to start my tank along with the substrate the way for the fish tells you to make it and I got mud from me Willy pond and I mix that in with it so every time I do a water change I get some water from the lake I have a small tank a 10 gallon, so are you only take about 4 gallons out so I can literally take 1 gallon from the lake or pond rather and I use that in my water changes everything seems to be going well Have no spikes in anything when I do water changes Everything looks really good Sincerely, Preacher, Paul D Comment from : Judy De |
|

I'm getting ready to start a first time 10 gal aquarium Just wondering if I went down to my local creek and got some gunk, if it would have the right organisms to support fresh water tropical fish Would the gunk from the creek be better than adding commercial bacteria additive? We all know, as kids we had fair ground gold fish in a bowl Little 2 inch long things driven nuts going around in circles Father felt sorry for them so built garden pond Those fish grew 6-8 inches in a few years Can't remember feeding them much, would buy daphnia as a treat Comment from : fly bobbie |

I got a nano cube, about 15 gallons, its filled with one huge plant I grew for five or six years now, its roots cover the whole ground I never change the water or the sand/dirt, I only clean the filter BUT it is crystal clear, there's dozens of healthy guppys, that live two to four years, they got no deformations, no bent spines whatsoever Friend told me it looks more like a pond than a tank, but when I look at images of the forest ponds of South America, the natural habitat of guppys, it looks very similar to what I got One thing is the movement of the water, I use two pumps to keep the water in motion and the oxygen level very high So a blackout would probably be an issue, cause it's a lot of fish for a small tank Apart from that it's a self sustaining system, very balanced and works for many years now Comment from : deepfield23 |
|
This is exactly what I am setting out to do for my turtle tank I am about to upgrade from 20 to 55 gallons and would love to avoid needing a filter Comment from : shaitan7ddd |

So do I add in the pond water or do I get some plants and sticks from outdoor pond and put that in the fish tank? Comment from : Lotus |

|
So is he saying to go out to a lake and get a scoop of water and dump it in my tank? Comment from : tmc89 |

How do I collect the "outside" I mean how much water? Do I scrape dirt from thhe bottom of a pond? The sea? and how much I love this idea and I already have a good set up going with plants several years old and abse like you describe with a layer of dirt under the sand which obviously helps the plants growHow do I add bacteria from outside????
