A lot of the "certification x is useless" comments really are saying that HR departments are relying on them as a checkbox to filter applicants by You can't even get in the door without it, even though you may know much, much more than people who have it Personally, I've seen a lot of people hired based on certifications (in the SQL Server DBA arena) who were less competent than most interns But they get in the door based on having that certification The problem is HR departments are, by and large, useless with regard to evaluating talent

I liked that he pointed out that value is relative but also remember about perceived value which is different for everyone An HR person will not look at certs the same way as an IT Manager An IT Manager who started as a programmer will look at certs differently than one who started as a network engineer You have no control over who is going to be looking at your resume when you post it on a job site

One should also understand several of these certs will allow you to basically test out (via transfer credits) of certain classes for example in WGU's BSCSIA and MSCSIA degree programs This makes for less classes you need to finish your degree I was able to get state grant money for some of the training & employer paid for the exams This knocked out 12 classes off my degree of 34 classes Every little bit helps

Ahh! you had me scared there for a minute I thought you were going to crap all over some of the certs I'm looking to get but instead you're defending them I agree any cert is worth getting I do however believe you need to actually learn something and not just get the cert as fast as possible There are so many certs out there that say "get this "cert" in as little as 4 days! Those certs are useless in my opinion One or two week boot camps are also crap

Been in IT NOW FOR 20 years start at the bottom and work your way up, as most say certs are not everythingYou could be a person who can study hard and pass the exam but in the real world have no ideabrbrIt's your skills and experience which helps you along the way, for me study is done exams are a big fat no no but that doesn't mean I don't know my stuffbrbrAll I'm saying is training is more important than certs, this video was a bit of an eye opener because yes some certs are importantly depending what your career path is to be!

As an IT Instructor in Career Technical Education, I can tell you that IT certifications are in fact quite important, and most if not all of our employers and business partners would not even consider a job applicant without any IT certifications earned Our main goal in our IT Academy is to teach the right technical skills, learn how to apply them in the real world, and earn as many IT certifications as possible while enrolled in one of our programs Our placement numbers prove that certified students are likely to get jobs in IT, while students with no cert are usually out of luck and unemployed or employed in non-IT industries (most common are hospitality and retail)

Above all possible certification and even degree, the most important thing in the IT field is being resourceful and capable of self-taught at least the basics and new trending technologies Self-sufficiency and passion, basically that's it is all Anyway, I messing currently with rack and home servers, mostly *BSD rather than Linux except for some hypervisors In my case, probably some certification about networking and devops technologies can be useful -in a short place, basically I wanna be an independent worker and also trading a bit part of my salaries
