#ASKGMBNTCH can you put a 12 speed cassette on a down hill bike with changing the duralier and the chain

#askGMBNTech Doddy, quick Q relating to the 12 speed chain on an 11 speed cassette discussion: “Can you use an 11 speed quick link on a 12 speed chain”? I’m really struggling to find a dedicated 12 speed quick link I ride a Canyon Spectral: ON CF7 eBike with Shimano Deore XT 11-52 12 speed set up with a Standard shimano 12 speed ‘hyper glide’? Chain Absolute love your show and have become as addicted to buying tools and tinker as I have to riding since getting my first MTB for 15 years back in Feb this year (#LockDownBlowOut) Best wishes to all at GMBN and the channels - Keep up the good work; you bring a lot of joy and escapism to a lot of people

#askGMBNTech Hello, I have a Marzocchi bomber all mountain 2, 160mm on a hardtail Its been creaking and making snapping noises for the last few months The noise occurs when the fork twists and flexes Im 99 sure it is the CSU I heard of the loctite metod and wondered if you ever tried it I wount be replacing any part of the fork, since it will cost more that my whole bike Is there any other solution to this problem Is it dangerous to ride it or if its damaging the fork

@hodgo1981
Sounds like Fox have finally caught up with the technology of the small guys in suspension damping I wonder if it Fox Grip 2 is as good as a Manitou Mattoc or Mezza?

#ASKGMBNTECH Hi Doddy Love the show Great as always Question:could you pair fox 38 (of course kashima) stantions and rockshox zeb lowers I know you'l have to be suspension guru but is it somehow possible? Greetings from Croatia

@knarfis
#askGMBNTech Hi Doddy, Just watched the video about hubs that you put out a month ago Question, why aren't one way bearings being used, instead of these mechanical ratchet designs that are currently in use and have been since the beginning of time? With one way bearings, engagement is instant and would most likely be lighters as hubs already need to use bearings, but it would rid the system of the ratchet and pawl systems, which are wearing items and the one way bearing system is super quiet Is there any reason behind the use of these 'click-click' like mechanisms?
Comment from : @knarfis

@ricardoandrez9806
#askGMBNTech Do you have any opinion on the Fuel EX 8 GX and the Fuel EX 98, and if it is worth the price difference I want an all around bike, I do a bit of trail and road bike to get to work and I also want to start doing more enduro type of stuff Sorry if my English isn't correct, it's not my first language, I'm actually from Portugal Thanks for the help!
Comment from : @ricardoandrez9806

@fentuz
As i found organic pads was not great in winter and metallic pads are noisy, i ride with galfer ebike pads (immediate bite, no fading, no noise) and 160 hope floating rotors front and back on xc setup
Comment from : @fentuz

@hananas2
Tbh I think braking power is a bit of personal preference too, I run a 203mm rotor and a 4-pot on XC tyres, I like having all the power I would ever need, just gotta modulate them properly to not lock up the wheel
Comment from : @hananas2

@davideparise
12 speed chain on an 11 speed cassette? How does it save money?
Comment from : @davideparise

@sebevidente7328
#askGMBNTech brbrGreetings Doddy! I wanted to get your input on protective bike skins because the opinions about them in my circles have been a bit divisive- some would definitely have it applied to their bike, some think it's just a waste of money and a potential concern in the long-run Why do you think this is so? Cheers!
Comment from : @sebevidente7328

@kvegasdirtrider1420
If the B tension screw is set at sag, does that mean shifting in a work stand will never be ideal ? #askgmbntech (Sram eagle)

@jeltlangeveld5097
#askgmbntechbrHi Doddy, I’ve had a muddy ride last week and a lot of sand got in the drivetrain It stopped working for about a minute or so (I could press the shifter but it didn’t ‘click’) Now that the bike is cleaned up the problem seems to be solved Do I need to look in to it more or is it good now that it is clean? The drivetrain is Shimano XT 12 speed of it that could make a difference
Comment from : @jeltlangeveld5097

@CONCEPTS83
Hi, Doddy! hope all's well Loving the content mate, Slightly off topicI'm originally from North London/ UK, took a career move to Toronto and the US for now A question on a vintage bike I have, only ridden 3 times, Maxim Polished Aluminium, old school, 265 wheels system3 hubs,MATRiX Rims with Shamino Deore XT gear, Judy XC front forks, XTR shifter Serial# A50800527 all in great nick What upgrades would you do or leave vintage? #askgmbntechbrHi guys, I love your show I got a wtb sx17 29er rim, a Schwalbe rocket ron tire, and an inner tube with a Schrader valve Can I convert it into a Presta? I am planning to convert it into a tubeless setup What is your opinion? Thanks, and keep up the fantastic work
Comment from : @kynsgt3648

@dicksplatts007
Doddy a 11 speed chain does work on a 12 speed set up, I've tried it and it works finebrOh and I only use uberbike pads with race matrix or ematrix for extra durability

@Shift4g
With 29ers now being declared the standard for a bike, and 26ers having a resurgence in popularity it definitely feels like 275 has become the red headed step child of the industry

@williamfowler5260
#askgmbntech hi Doddy, I have 2 questions I hope you can answer First, how long can I leave my dropper post down without risking damage? If I drop it to fit it in my car will it cause any problems after say a 6 or 7 hour drive for a riding holiday?brAnd second, is there a recommended ratio for rim to tyre width? I have schwalbe rapid Rob 225 on both my 29er with stans Flow rims and on my old 26er singlespeed with mavic x517 Obviously the tyre profile is different, the stans are almost double the width of the mavic What ratio is ideal?brThanks for the show!

@robertmcriley9568
#askgmbntechbrMy friend has a cheap hardtail with a 3x8 drivetrain and has been looking at converting to a 1x system He's considered just getting a 1x chainring but would use a lot of range Could he just put on a larger range cassette or would he need to swap the rear mech as well?
Comment from : @robertmcriley9568

@joelzfelton3775
I’m using Uber bike brake pads on 2 pot shimano slx brakes with 203 front and 180 rear Find it works brilliantly and braking is insane with the Uber bike brake pads (race matrix) would upgrade to 203 on the rear tho for better manual control
Comment from : @joelzfelton3775

@hench_wrench_repairs
#AskGmbnTech hi doddy lovin the show, 2 questions from me, is it possible to make rebound faster, past the max rebound on the fork/shock, i bought a new bike with a 2012 Lyric R 170mm Also what do you think of buying bikes from lesser known brands, i bought a 2013 Sunn Charger S2 and people tell me its a bad idea, what do you think? Thanks!
Comment from : @hench_wrench_repairs

@dyzoly
Oh Doddy, totally agree with you on 26ers, still a good choice, especially for the not so tallbrIt is great that you can say thing like this, and not get fired

@cadegocal6227
#askgmbntech Hi! Whenever I finish my ride I always leave my bike in its lowest gear (10th tooth) and leave my dropper post up In my head this makes sense as there is the least amount of tension on cables and pressure in the dropper post Is this silly? It is just a habit now A side note I am 189cm and on a large Geometron g16 (1320mm wb) and would love to still go longer, it goes around corners well and climbs great
Comment from : @cadegocal6227

#askGMBNTechbrHi Doddy! I'm looking for some extra security/gps theft tracking for my new mtb What do you think of the new Apple AirTag for this? Are there any other products you'd recommend? Cheers, love the show!

@idiotonbike
I am a heavy rider at 115kg (going down to about 95kg once I've lost a bit) and have been thinking about brake rotors toobrI'm waiting for my bike to get posted first to see how it goes but had planned to up rotor size for some better heat dispersion and better bite Will wait and see!

@clemens8744
I'm running Magura Mt7 with sixpack semi-metallic pads as they are far cheaper than the original ones (9,20€ vs 26€) I had the originol ones before, but in the end I can't find a difference in performance

@CodyBSmith
#askgmbntechbrHi Doddy! I have had some issues with my drivetrain under heavy pedaling (mostly standing up while climbing >15 grade sections) Most recently, during a few consecutive attempts up a steep technical climb, it would randomly shift up several gears almost as soon as I stood up Do you have any ideas for what might cause that? I ride a 2018 Santa Cruz Chameleon with Sram NX 11 speed I'm 5'11" and 190 lbs on a size largebrbrAlong with unwanted shifting, I've had 3 hubs give out on me in the last year (2 Novatec hubs in WTB wheels and the hub in a Stan's No Tubes Arch S1 in my second ride with it--but my replacement Stan's Arch S1 has lasted a few months now) I'm not sure if these are related issues, but I figure I should mention them in case these are symptoms of other bigger problems brbrDoes this sound like something mechanical I can fix, or are there any potential riding technique issues I need to work on? I was doing a lot of standing while riding steep sections until a few weeks ago when I realized how much of a difference dropping my stem makes in climbing--dropping my stem has felt like a whole new bike, and it has been beautiful for climbing! But I still ran into the issue I mentioned first with unwanted shifting I'd love any guidance if you have it Thanks!
Comment from : @CodyBSmith

@GeorgeWhittam
I’m currently running a box 12 speed chain on 11 speed SRAM 1180 cassette and Apex1 mech I just built the bike and I’m still dialing it in, but seems a little shift normally between all the different cogs

@andersun16
As a 225lb Clydesdale, I put 200mm rotors on my DH bike with metallic pads No problems I don't ride DH in the wet (USA) I also run 180 F/R on my trail bike - same deal Discs and pads are a much cheaper/easier option to install yourself
Comment from : @andersun16

@tychoMX
For BBs with play or creak - in my experience, you'll destroy the bearings, the shell and the thing will be basically impossible to spin in a regular plane before you damage the frame I've done that with a couple of winter commuters, and a really expensive one with a Chris King BB that probably was excessively loaded and failed pretty quickly after an initial squeak In both cases the bearings and seals and races turned to mush and the frame was not damaged
Comment from : @tychoMX

@onedsf
#askGMBNTechbrI recently saw a great deal on the tires I usually use Given the current shortages and stock unpredictability, would it make sense to buy and hold onto tires that may not be used for a few years? What is the average shelf life on stored tires and/or the best way to store them if they won't be used for a long time? Thanks as always for your excellent content
Comment from : @onedsf

@Huntsomatic
I'm confused by the comment that bigger wheels lower your BB As the tires are the only contact point with the ground, if your axles are further from the ground wouldn't that raise everything on the bike also? brOr is it a difference in frame design depending on wheel size? Thanks Doddybr#askgmbntech
Comment from : @Huntsomatic

@billderas3420
Recently installed a Fox 36 Factory fork with Grip2 on my 2020 Specialized Levo SL Found that the Fox recommended air pressure/rebound/compression settings to be a fairly good start; but, wanted to improve the fork's plushness Reading through the manual, I discovered that the fork came with one volume spacer installed Removed this spacer which gained me 10 mm more travel and the plushness I was seeking After a few test sessions at the local bike park; and, a few minor rebound/compression changes, I am in mtb heaven Have to thank you for all your technical insight this past year which have greatly helped me tune my bike Next targetthe rear shockLOL Cheers!

@MylesMackey from the last question in the video, apply for a service tech position at Trek! Tons of locations hiring around the US and overseas and you’ll get in house training on everything you need to know! With the mechanical background and enthusiasm they’d love to have you

@thiccvicx
higher speed chains have higher durability too so id be interested in trying that too
Comment from : @thiccvicx

@kibbee890
Used chain sounds like a bad idea Once its worn out its going to cause extra wear on the cassette and chain rings making it more costly over time
Comment from : @kibbee890

@vivek_v
If you need brake pads, Disco Brakes have brake pads for 7 dollars a pair And depending on which one you chose, they are much better than stock resin pads I have the Kevlar pads and they are very good when it's dry but not very good when it's wet (still better than organic pads) At 7 dollars a pair, they are an absolute steal that over time will save hundreds of dollars
Comment from : @vivek_v

@aaronkeogh
I use 10 speed chain on a 9 speed drive train & 12 speed chain on an 11 speed drive train and it’s literally better in every way - quieter, smoother shifting and lighter!
Comment from : @aaronkeogh

@vencahonig732
I tried 11 sp chain on 10 sp drivetrain It worked but significantly worse shifting It took longer, i had to push the shifter lever a little futher to push teh chain up the next cog

#askgmbntechbrbrHi Doddy,brI have just purchased an Evil Offering V2 and the bank balance is now well and truly emptied Whilst I have taken the usual security precautions such as a ground anchor/chain in the garage, is there any MTB specific insurance options available for my pride and joy in the event of theft or accidental damage?

@PHDTS
I'm using a 10-spd chain on my son's 7-spd bike Still has a 7-spd cassette (different gear ratios now) and I converted it to a 1x setup and used a 32T narrow-wide chainring However, the 7-spd Shimano chain was loose fitting on the chainring and the 10-spd Shimano chain felt more secure on the chainring, so I just left that on there No issues with a few hundred miles so far with that 10-spd chain on the 7-spd setup No issues with the shifting as that's still nice & smooth too

#askgmbntechbrHi DoddybrI have got a tricky Question for you: I am a heavy rider (120kg) and i run 220mm Rotors on both ends To top it of i have got SRAM Guide T 4-Piston Brakecalipers and fined Pads installed When i decend 5 or more Minutes of steep and fast terrain i get overheating Rotors Have you got any Ideas to remedy that?
Comment from : @DieselWieselGR

@13Lextalionis
#askGMBNTech Hi Doddy! Recently most often riders or companies talk about progressive geometry on their bikes Could you explain a little what that means exactly?brAnd another thing I don't want to invest in next floor pump so could you recommend any stand alone booster for mounting tubeless tire(Schawlbe, Topeak, Milkit)?
Comment from : @13Lextalionis

@iliketoridebikes
#askGMBNTechbrWhat's the reason for suggesting that factory chain grease should never be removed in a past video? Many tests from different sources show that factory grease is an ineffective lubricant and causes increased chain wear compared to other lubricants

@christoingram
I'm not sure about the advice given around rotor size and heat Wouldn't a larger rotor dissipate more heat? Maybe I misheard but I thought Doddy mentioned increased heat at the calliper with larger rotors?brbrI suppose the movement of the disc would be marginally faster the larger the rotor but with less torque I'm confused

11 speed shifter with 10 speed mech on 9 speed and 11 speed cassette ( curently 9 speed 40 tooth) with 10speed chain and get decent results espeshly on the 9 speed as it shifts up easier and feels smoother , shifts ok with 11speed hub too but not running it as having problems with the rear mech getting caught on 42 tooth sprocket

#askGMBNTechbr Hey Doddy, does stopping power decrease as ur wheel size increases? I noticed that my old bike, a 275, with 2 piston tektro brakes and 160/180 rotors, stopped significantly quicker than my new bike, a 29er, with the same brakes and rotors Is it just me, or is this real?
