Good improvements over v1 Still shucked drives though :( you managed to get lucky this time one drive dies and there goes your savings due to no warranty, having that many drives you can't rule out three chance of an early drive death

The use of old workstation boards is interesting as there are so many to be had on ebay - it looks as though the Dell workstations are more proprietary, but good to see that the HP boards might follow some standards - i'll take a look at some of those

FYI, shucking isn’t always the cheapest option For me, there are 20 TB or 22 TB drives around for 15 CHF per TB, which is about the same as your drives cost/TB So with for of those do a RAID 10 and be golden as well

I built out a extra Dell R720 with 192GB of RAM with 2 EMC JBODS with 30 4TB SAS6 drives 120TB Raw Its freaking 8U and works very well with a 10GB SFP to my cisco switch I have TrueNAS Scale on it as well I use it host iSCSI LUNS for VMware

you should have gone with z440 mobo - almost same price, mem is a touch more but you get nvme boot and better cpu upgrade path - this was a good effort generally - going to 25 gbe is another minor upgrade that makes a difference

I wouls of gotten a better power supply Buy a gold poweer supply Ive had many bronze power supplies blow up After my 4th bronze i upgraded all my 6 systems to gold power supplies and ive had 0 issues ! Also, a really nice quiet big tower cpu cooler is the way to go Expensive but itll pay of Trust me

It's sometimes asinine how much some people try charging for old PC cases, Saw some Dickhead on ebay trying to charge $1,000 for an Antec Nine Hundred all because it had an Nvidia Sticker on it Or people try tacking on the word "Vintage" and try to charge sometimes over $200, and if they aren't trying to charge some dumb high price they ask for like $150 for shipping, sometimes its both Like nah bruh, I'll give you bout tree fiddy
