Great video, what is the key light box you were using on your subject? Thanks Comment from : Reagan Gillespie |
I am fascinated with the new tech and the direction that Nikon is going, but not the entirety of this camera What is the deal with the micro SD card slot? Comment from : Stan Obert |
Not something I'd consider to be a professional camera, more aimed at hipsters Comment from : Psyclonus |
The main thing that initially stopped me changing to digital from film was the fact that i detested the shape and look of all those cheap-looking plastic ugly lumps That changed when Olympus came out with the retro-looking EP's, followed by the lovely looking successor to the old OM series, the OMD's This, together with the fact that i'd always owned OM's, beginning with the OM1, all way up to OM4, was the clincher for me Not forgetting the fact that there were thousands of old OM lenses that could be adapted for it So it's nice to see the likes of Fuji, and now Nikon beginning to go back to their past (design-wise) A lovely looking beasty I might even be tempted! Thanks Comment from : vincenzo cherubini |
Looking forward to getting mine, I believe it will be a nice compliment to my Z8 while looking amazing Preordered a colored version Comment from : Jerry m |
I heard they're staging a truck in Williamsburg Brooklyn so this way the people there won't have to take the ride into Manhattan Comment from : Gewglesux |
Hi matt do you have comparison shots vs zfc for those of us looking to upgrade Comment from : Darren Osborn |

Love my Zfc its a fun little camera I am very excited to see how this new camera does Zf, but waiting see if they release the silver version Owned the Fm back in the day it was stolen 😪had the DF too nice camera but had some work around issues Comment from : Pepper |
When will we get an updated crop sensor camera instead of all this retro gimmickry? Comment from : Mike McD |
For a Youtuber, your pictures aren't half bad, you should do something with that 😄brAll jokes aside, thanks for the video I've got the Zf on my list but I'll wait for the hype to settle down Comment from : Luc |
Wish it was $2000, It's $3500 for the body here in Australia :( Comment from : Eric F |
No thumb grip and a flip out video screen No dice Comment from : Carlos Vega |
This is a mirrorless version of the Df, with a more modern processor I had the Df and eventually sold it I was caught up in retro fever but in the end, it was a camera that was cumbersome to use Plus it was too heavy given its ergonomics The Zf is only a a little lighter It was my Df experience, plus Nikon's late arrival to the mirrorless world that moved me to Sony That's too bad as I enjoyed my Nikons Comment from : David Meaux |
Like to see the handling with nikon f lenses and manual focus thank you Comment from : Arnold Attard |
How suitable for shooting sports, primarily the focusing performance? Comment from : Greg Riley |

No aperture ring on Nikon lenses is a dealbreaker for me Comment from : James Noud |
What’s happening to your voice? Comment from : Mo K |
OMG that black and orange colour way is amazing Comment from : Tim White |
I own nothing in the Nikon system, I am heavily over-invested in Leica M, Micro Four Thirds and Canon EF - yet I will get this camera I MUST own this Comment from : The Dark Slide |
For me, retro design is not just about the looks It’s about the compact form factor including lenses… and I see they delivered that while providing ibis This may just prevent me from getting the a7c ii now that it has the 10bit video on a 25mp sensor! Such a shame that it appears to overheat in like 1 second though Comment from : cornflake |
Damn, I was trying to save money Mat Comment from : Jack Slater |
This camera is selling like crazy I think it's the best camera Nikon came out with in a very long time My first camera was a Nikon 8 years ago Comment from : TechOutAdam |
2000 is a great price for this camera Honestly if this had been the Z6 III in a contemporary body at this price, I’d have been happy Now I’m wondering if the Z6 III will just be a re-release of this camera, or if Nikon will raise the price of it to $2500 (in line with Sony and Canon) and add more features, new sensor? Comment from : Doug |
I didn't think I would but its looks really fantastic Comment from : SumrSurf |
Thanks Matt Quality video as usual I’d love to see you put the Zf though it’s paces in low light conditions I sometimes struggle getting settings dialled in on my Fuji x-t3 when I can’t see the dial values due to low lighting conditions I guess the zf will have the same issues ? Comment from : Michael Akayan |
Hi Matt I’m interested in learning how the ZF handles with non-chipped MF lenses Are there any additional focus aids that Nikon has added in this camera to allow more precise focusing? Comment from : doogieham |
Thanks for the videobrI would be interested in seeing a bit more of the video capabilities and if the Zf can use adapted af-s lenses with AF in video mode My sony nikon f to E mount af adapter only works for stills I still have many f mount lenses which I'd love to use for video Thanks Comment from : Ludo Misc Vids |
Can you test how this camera interact with manual focus lens such as the zeiss zf and zf2 series? Comment from : teng gao |
Hi Matt, thanks for your impression of the camera As a B&W Film photographer for over 50 years, I'm very happy with this camera Is the monochrome only in JPEG and the raw image is colour, as the Zfc is I'm interested in what are the max speed of the electronic shutter The 245 Mp sensor is fine, that's all I want as I have the Z7ii for HiRes images I've already placed my order with Nikon Australia, as this is the camera I've been waiting for, and the price was right I'm interested in the autofocus on old Nikon and Leitz lenses (with the adaptors) Comment from : John Butler |
We want 4k120 no crop Comment from : lex Tr3 |
… Sorry, the “film” aspect of this camera is a cheap gimmick This is simply a generic mirrorless camera which produces images that look like every other mirrorless It won’t even shoot vintage lenses without a large adapter (completely unbalancing the set-up), the top dials are more awkward than standard control wheel adjustments, the B&W jpegs are already standard options (including high contrast settings), and the rest is cosmetics The DF was designed to be able to use vintage lenses But most importantly, the DF’s sensor and distinct quality of image set the camera apart in a league of it’s own This was the basis of the love for the DF Comment from : Iain Foulds |
I wanna be Matt Grainger when I grow up!!! Comment from : Larry Zapata |
The cap is snazzy Matt Now I need to figure out how to afford this camera 😅 Comment from : M B |
Does it have recall shooting function? I have come to use that a lot, flipping back and forth between slow shutter speed for blurred action and fast shutter speed I will be using it as a travel camera so low light performance would be a welcome insight Ted Forbes thought the contrast on the images was unique and the high ISO noise was slightly superior to the Z8 and Z9 Can you confirm the eight stops of image stabilization for us? It sounds like the weather sealing is labeled as "resistant", not "sealed" Comment from : Thomas Chamberlin |
I am not convinced, which is a shame, I was looking forward to this camera However, this is meant to be a retro photography camera, but it has a flippy, tilting screen and I hate thatregardless of what you sayit is just horrible Should had been two SD card slots, not one plus micro brNikon should had followed the example of Fujifilm with their amazing XT5 brI do like the dedicated B&W switch, mind you brI do think Nikon should had pushed it to at least 30mp Comment from : Theytoldmetodoit1 |
it needs a old style battery grip MD 12 Comment from : James Long |
I noticed a change in the detail of my pictures going from a D7100 to a D750, and again going to a D850 Even still, I was always very pleased with the output of my D750 Comment from : Luke McGregor |

2k is a lot of money for what you are getting Comment from : Rumplestiltskin7 |
If you want to get close to the resolution a mf film camera gives you than you are looking at roughly 50mp So yes, I would have liked more than 24mp but other than that… I loved the df and this camera seems to be even better Comment from : Elderin Moi |
Great review! Super classic design One of the factors I liked about the film FE, FM models was that the shutter dial overlapped the front of the camera so that you could use your index finger to change shutter speed-just like a Front- Command dial Not all Nikon users seemed to know this The Nikon designers seemed to have forgotten this key design detail The DF didn’t have it Everyone has forgotten the advantages of having the shutter dial overlapping the front of the top panel Arrrrgh! Even Fujifilm have missed this great design trick… I now own Fuji bodies which require small fingers and hopeless to feel the buttons in cold weather Might have to go back to Nikon who are producing great small bodies with big buttons in the right places Great review Matt Comment from : Barry Mayes |
So nikon knows how to flip a screen Comment from : JSerenity |
Just wish it had been rangefinder body like Fujifilm X-Pro3, will await Fuji release of possible X-Pro4 before deciding They already had retro style in Zfc Comment from : Scotboy |

Comment from : Fredrik Tjeno |
Nikon did good here I would have gone half a step further and brought the fight to Sony with 30 mpx Comment from : Forged From Freedom |
I’m not sure that this is the camera for me, but it does have one feature that I’ve been asking for and maybe you could test it for us I understand that in manual focus mode you can still use eye detect This allows you to punch into the eye at 100 without having to manually move the focus point Does it work? I’m guessing that the eye needs to be nearly in focus for this to work, but how practical is it with wide apertures? Thanks in advance and keep up the good work! Comment from : David Biddlecombe |
I‘d love to know more about the manual focusing experience with this camera Comment from : Claus |
I liked the Zfc until I held one!!I suspect the ergonomics would kill it for me Would like to see this addressed in your new videothanks Comment from : Andy Currie Photography |
There is a manhattan in hong kong? Comment from : bishfrie |
Looks like it also has a sensor cover like the Z8 and Z9? Comment from : Wolfgang Enneker |
Why? It looks like an FE, Not an FM2, Why YouTubers keep saying that? The FM2 looks are on the Zfc Comment from : Art |
thanks matt acouple questions does this camera have weather sealing and also is there a sensor shield thankyou Comment from : Stephen Akinlami |
maybe you can take a pixelshift, to see the resolution Thanks a lot Comment from : Panorama Photography ilmioLugano dot ch |
Let's hope they release a retro-styled F-Z adapter too for all the old Ai/AiS lenses! Comment from : Fotograf Alexander Nikolis |
Also it doesn’t look like they made it with an option for some kind of vertical grip I mainly shoot portraits and this really kind of makes this a disappointing aspect Maybe someone will make something that would work Comment from : Chris the Kid |
Master Pimp Daddy Matt ❤ Comment from : Neth BT |
Matt, any idea what the RAW fps is? I know they have said it does 30fps in jpeg Comment from : Chris the Kid |
Wow interesting… especially it could win some of the Fuji shooters over like me ;-) Just that auf with the 40mm is a nice walk around combo Comment from : Mahdi Manesh |
I like a tilting screen! Comment from : Mike Lyon |
Interested in seeing more about it's focus tracking, and performance at high iso Thanks for the first look vid, lovely model BTW Comment from : Bobby |
9:40 can't link in youtube, but max film resolution equivalent is 80MP, for some iso 16 film if I remember correctly Comment from : mipmipmipmipmip |
If they make a decent F to Z mount with screw drive compatibility this would be so good! at the moment its really missing it Was hoping it would come out at the same time! Comment from : MultiSigil |
If only some of the lenses came with an aperture ring I shoot aperture priority most of the time and I'm going to be using the control ring to change it, just the same as I would if it had a PASM ring Comment from : Simon Trezise |
The screen like the Sony A7R5that should be an industry standard for every brand nowhaha everyone will be happy with thathaha Comment from : Ld Mndz |
24mpx is enough unless you crop a lot If not, you will be fine and you will get slightly better low-light performance compared to high mpx bodies Comment from : Andrzej Janiak |
Hi Matt, the ZF have the sensor shield? Thank you Comment from : Angelo Pillone Meloni |
please check it with the adapter and some manual focus lens Comment from : Cherif Shawky |

I like your outfit 😊 Comment from : Bahaa Kadhem |
Love it, want one! Comment from : Cary Marshall |
I instantly missed the second function button on the front I always use both Comment from : Carlos André Viana |
Does any of Nikon’s Z-mount lenses have Aperture markings? On this camera it would make sense to have Aperture markings on the lens I also wish this camera had a tilt screen instead of this articulating screen Although, being able to hide the screen by turning it so that the back of the screen is facing outward is nice Comment from : RS |
As usual in Europe we are screwed again With the current exchange rate euro to dollar we have to pay 2624 dollar Comment from : Audiman |
A good preview on the Nikon Zf Matt I also agere that 24 MP is enough Do you know if older lenses fitt the Zf ? Comment from : Jesper Halland |
I am far from excited about the ZF; considering that every modern camera on the market caters for the needs of tech obsessed zombies, you'd think that for once Nikon would cater for the needs of photography purists by making the ZF for the niche market of genuine photography enthusiasts (purists), who learned the craft from the days of manual focus SLRs, but no, instead Nikon launched yet another camera for Generation Z dead-heads The ZF should have been based on the Nikon F3 with hardly any features, no auto-focus, with a professional build quality; but instead the ZF is yet another let down Digital Leica Ms are no alternative for me as they are way too expensive as are the lenses; and the range of lenses that can realistically be used on a M is realistically limited to just 35mm and 50mm Comment from : PSYCHIC-PSYCHO |
Is there a sensor shield? Comment from : loonytoongonemad |
