I still have a lot of reading to do in my life even though I am a fair way through it Although there are many books that have taught me a lot about life the one that stays constantly and which I refer to the most in the way I live my life is Siddharta by Herman Hesse I have read many of his and he makes me feel as though he is writing for me or I feel as if somehow I am lurking in the shadows of his characters Comment from : @TheCompleteGuitarist |

Robert, I can't believe that you too was so influenced by Carlos Castaneda Well, we are from the same generation When I was young this series was my guilty pleasure My high school history teacher like others here told me to read Castaneda My strict parents would have been stunned I didn't take many illicit drugs, but I didn't need to Carlos took me on some of the wildest trips imaginable and it helped me to be more open with my own experiences Along with trying to listen to Ram Dass teach meditation thru cassette tapes, I never had to drop acid either Ram had a really interesting mental pattern that was fascinating to follow So thank you for the smile you put on my face for great memories this brought back Comment from : @nanannyse |

You read thousands of books? Average person reads only max 17 books a yearbrThe average American reads about 126 books per year, including those they started but may not have completed This number has been relatively consistent over the years, with the average dropping to around 538 books per year when considering only the books completedbrReading thousands of books in a year would be an extraordinary feat and is generally not achievable for the average person due to time constraints and the sheer volume of reading involved Even for the most dedicated and fast readers, this would require an exceptionally large amount of time and effort that may not be practical or feasible for most individuals While setting ambitious reading goals can be admirable, a goal of reading thousands of books in a single year would likely be unrealistic for the average person Comment from : @TroyQwert |

I've been thinking about great books recently (now that I'm in my 60s which I can't believe) brbrLooking back, "The Religions of Man" by Huston Smith -- particularly the section on Hinduism -- made me realize that life is a series of stages, with disillusion at the end of each which causes a move in a new direction toward enlightenmentbrbr"The Communist Manifesto" for showing me that a well-written book can cause a tremendous amount of damage no matter how well-intentioned the authorbrbrI recently read "Pride and Prejudice" (the annotated version from Penguin) and I wish I had read this when I was younger, for the light it shines on relationships between men and womenbrbrIn the self-help area, I've read a bunch of books, but only a few proved worthwhile Barbara Walters "How to Talk With Anyone About Practically Anything" helped me get out of my shell and connect with people It taught me to listen, openly and honestly (I still screw up however) "Getting Things Done" helped me organize my life Even when I fall off the wagon (being consistent is so hard for me), I still accomplish about 75 percent more, and every time I go back, I well get things donebrbrNow I've downloaded the Prince for the Kindle, and we'll see what happens Comment from : @BillPeschel |

Like most professionals, and authors the objective is to sell books He mentions 'The Prince' which basically 'The 48 Laws of Power' is derived from notice a lot of the movies lately are either remakes or similar to older movies? not a coincidence Keep in mind, not a lot of princes running around today, and if you emulate their behavior from books, part of them are about manipulating people who will eventually despise you or worse yet seek to destroy you or kill you, and they will likely outnumber you Hopefully, it will simply let you recognize the bad apples Comment from : @youview5023 |

As a formative product of the 60s, I too was deeply affected by Castaneda' books In the same spirit (so to speak), Aldous Huxley's "Heaven and Hell" & "The Doors of Perception" as well as "The Center of the Cyclone" by John Cunningham Lilly were all pretty "trippy" As a historian, Thucydides has always been one of my favorites Comment from : @kurtdunbar912 |

In the “48 Laws of Power” ;br I think there are some ethical considerations in applying many of the principles outlined in Greene’s book but my take on it is you can adapt it, make modifications and all while still drawing the benefits intended but without intentionally harming people and becoming an A-hole Comment from : @acool6401 |

While I admire Robert Greene's writings and own several of his books, reading them means sitting down for hours instead of getting some exercise This is the main problem I have with books nowadays Reading, along with devices and activities such as cars, cell phones, computers, TV's, classical music concerts, plays, movie theaters, restaurants, sporting events, and so on, all generally make sure we end up sitting down and likely eating unhealthy foods Reading likely will give us more information and hopefully more knowledge, but sitting too much would most likely make us unhealthy So, reading a lot contributes to living a sedentary lifestyle, definitely not a good thing There has to be a better way Comment from : @jolly7728 |
|

I've always loved to read but as I've gotten older I've gotten away from it I'd like to get back to it A couple books I have read that have really stuck with me One is Kalki by Gore VidalI found it haunting and it's been at least 20 years ago since I've read it but would like to read it again now that I'm older to see how my views have changed One other book that I truly consider life changing is the Holy BIble Truly life changing and I'm not just saying that I have read it cover-to-cover at least 6 times and different translations of it and each time I read it, I get an understanding that I didn't have the last reading and I have never gotten bored with it It's the story of mankind and absolutely fascinating To this day I read from it every single day It's like magic, full of wonderful things Some don't believe in it but it's such an incredible story, no one could make up something like that I love books and always will Comment from : @alexandraadams2070 |
