@EminayDrackoness
Ive learned Uncontracted braille in the read a paragraph and learn method, and I am fluent in uncontracted braille in 3 months, having been working on contracted braille now for about a month and a half My text book is entirely in braille so I have to apply my previously learned skills IE the braille alphabet, punctuation and some special characters to read and learn contracted braille and the further I get in my text book the more contracted it gets

@user-zx2sz4uo3r
Hey my parents both work at the DLI! One thing thing to note is that they learn these languages because they are completely immersed into the language it’s honestly pretty cool to see them improve at the languages

@markus1963nl
I had a DLI-graduate colleague that was in our sales team in our Amsterdam sales office He was ex-Airforce and spoke Spanish and French What I remember the most about him is that he could deal with irate and highly emotional French and Spanish customers as if he were communicating an escape route in a war zone He was so calm, cool and clear I did several languages at Thunderbird (AGSIM) back in the late 80's but it was clear to me that the DLI took things to a unique level
Comment from : @markus1963nl

@drkmwinters
Given women are better at language, it's weird that this is so male dominated Seems women are being excluded despite natural ability

@dryengalvao
My home language is Brazilian Portuguese, so I start to learned English to get some jobs opportunities outside Brazil brbrOne funny thing that I found out when I accessed the gloss site was, thare are many languages that are nice to learn, including Portuguese, but there isn't English language listed there, so I started to asking to myself why, because it was supposed to be GLOBAL LANGUAGE GLOSS and I don't know one more global language than English language 😅
Comment from : @dryengalvao

@antonioflores7917

Comment from : @LuckyVillageLife

@syang1490
This feels like a big social experiment (see how fast you can go from zero to native) Why not directly recruiting native speakers? And more intense training should be focusing on how to navigate better in hostile environment with their skill set
Comment from : @syang1490

@michaellube1821
3:58 brMy husband is Iranian and emigrated to the UK before the revolution He thought he spoke the language until he arrived in London for college He ended up putting off school for nearly a year to really learn English
Comment from : @michaellube1821

@devilstine4192
Public schools should teach immersion language course at an early age If we invested in our children imagine what the future would bring
Comment from : @devilstine4192

@toeg1
I speak three languages For me, the best and fastest way to learn a language is the same way a baby learns from their parents It's total immersion and WITHOUT translations There is no source language to compare to (and to misinterpret from) Hand gestures improve communication as do emotional stresses in the use Learn just like a baby does, only don't take five years to get the basics
Comment from : @toeg1

@eirschu8973
40 weeks is not FAST It's a normal duration for a language course These guys are not special 😂
Comment from : @eirschu8973

@Katrina-dq7se
He studied Russian and went to…Latvia? The majority of the youngest generation doesn’t speak Russian, he would be far better off using English (or learn Latvian)

@ImogenC-rt3fm
Me, me, me!! I LIVE here I WISH I could attend the DLI But at 56 years old, non-military? Well, one hangs out with the students (okay, drinks with the students)—and WORKS at it Specifically, one works at learning how to LEARN brbrI was a horse trainer Training horses IS learning a foreign language! Language learning that is task specific (like music or horse training) is actually EASIER because it’s linked to physical activitybrbrI’m better at learning to understand than learning to speak But…that’s a huge part of it, right? Learning to hear the words in the “noise”? Thanx for the MTC pin! Didn’t know about it
Comment from : @ImogenC-rt3fm

@backspacecommotion3836
My brother went to DLI and when he took the dlab he got the highest score that testing center had ever seen Super proud

The first thing you should learn in any language is, "Hello, my name is ____ I'm sorry, I'm learning (language), how do you say_____"

@taivo55
I wast at DLI for Hungarian in 1985 While it was pre-computer, many of the processes that you describe were my experience as well I might note that I went there having just finished a PhD in Linguistics, so I was getting the information at a deeper level than most of my classmates
Comment from : @taivo55

@cacogenicist
Learning a second language doesn't make you a "linguist" Studying actual linguistics makes you a linguist
Comment from : @cacogenicist

@jimallman4456
I graduated from DLI in 1971, German language Scored a 4 in the course, at that time the highest score attainable A 5 would indicate native speaker I can still read German pretty well, 52 years later That was a GREAT way to learn We had two teachers over the 8 months, one from Vienna, the other, from Hamburg The process described here is much advanced over the training we received
Comment from : @jimallman4456

@ivst3655
What a lot of rubbish! Nothing of substance to us Anyway, I wonder how well the soldiers speak English in first instance
Comment from : @ivst3655

@user-qi4py6nl1o
As a former LDS missionary and US military veteran that studied at DLI, I can attest that the language courses are intense and effective if you apply yourself and have some skills

Comment from : @areguapiri

@paulaalejandra1678
This information is very interesting, it is correct when they are talking about how important is to learn phonetics and pronunciation brIt doesn’t matter which language you want to learn, I think it is very important to learn the rhythm of the language ( sounds and entonación )
Comment from : @paulaalejandra1678

@katalinbranner3341
I speak over 5 languages and my nature language is Hungarian I`m vey interessting, how can you learn hungarian on a level of b2 in 2 weeks? Because I`m also language teacher in Switzerland and all students of me gave up with hunagrian, because it is very complicated You can learn after English very fast German, and all indoeuropain languges, because they have the same structure But with hunagrian you haven`t so lot of same structure in Europa In Asia yes
Comment from : @katalinbranner3341

@chadgarza9069

I speak 5 languages fluently, Never been to a school to learn these languages, I learned them all from my mom and my dad , I thought everyone knew more than one language, People always ask me how could you switch from one language to another, I don’t even feel like I’m switching , And know my kids they’ll speak 8 different languages

Comment from : @rngrzulu1275

@ThaiBo0gie420
I would only speak what i was trying to learn because that falling back to speaking your native tongue is what will kill you learning the language faster
Comment from : @ThaiBo0gie420

@dfdemt
As Marcus Luttrell said, most people don’t pay attention in language class They learn how to say “Allah sent me” and “there’s no way in hell you’re getting out of this” once they get to Afghanistan That’s priceless 😂
Comment from : @dfdemt

@cheekymoe629
So…I saw your comment about how Mormon Missionaries learn languages fast What a lot of people don’t know is that the military actually went to the Mormons to find out how they train in foreign languages and incorporated it into their language training programs

Comment from : @mgabor6936

@DezraVentures
I was a linguist in the USMC and didn't pick my language until I got to DLI (they give everyone a "default" assignment until they arrive to DLI, its always changed) I didn't get to experience scream and scribble but it sounds like something I should add in for my current language learning I could write a dozen books on everything I got to experience while there <3 it was the time of my life!
Comment from : @DezraVentures

@jaym5938
The only thing the US military understand about culture is how to destroy it Those who became linguists were meant to become linguistsit doesn't work for everyone
Comment from : @jaym5938

@redomisia
Persian/ Farsi speaker here It was fun to see Persian writings and here Persian words in the simulation practices that you showed Accents and dialects are pretty difficult to execute well The methods suggested were pretty interesting! brGood luck to anyone learning Persian!
