So many videos present John Singer Sargent as an example of a top painter and a style to emulate However, after studying the masters for a lifetime, Sargent never comes to my mind when I think of the best artists To me it seems that Sargent developed a style that caters to a certain segment of society, namely to the effete wealthy I would actually not wish to own the typical Sargent painting because it just doesn't convey the honesty of better painters Comment from : KpxUrz5745 |

I loooooove blending oil paint It's all about preference and what's appealing to the eye Im not moved by unleaded painting It actually irritates me when things aren't blended but that's just my style I think you should do whatever you want to do with your are because it's subjective 🤷🏾♀️ Comment from : Kiki Meonce |
Ehh i dont like that style as much it leaves brush strokes the transitions still look unnatural well they look exactly how you describe doing it like someone manually mixed the transition and applied but with blending you get a transition that goes thru sooo many values that it actually looks like how a shadow would start and end or how light would scatter and weaken especially in really deep parts cloudy skies just would not have that natual fluff heavy to soft color bleeding thru effect well not one that looks natural tho too much blending and softening definately doesnt look super good either looks like a vision of a painting lol Comment from : learn2 farm |
Does this man know how expensive oil paint is Comment from : lei |
You make a good point Fixating on blending is silly It's like people who use DeTAiLeD as a definition of good art, mis-frickin-guided Paint's going to paint and sometimes it blends, but focusing on blending makes mud Petting the paint over and over is a good way to muck up a painting Comment from : Candice Beck |

There are artist who do both, according to their habits and preferences with paint They may touch the colors, put the paint side-by-side and put paint on top of another color with a light touch or a bit more pressure Comment from : Greg Benner |

lmao if i don't blend everything my style dies I am hyper detailed, my paintings work if you see them from 1 cm away or 5 meters, every detail is there, i don't do splashes and spots Do what you want I dont like that messy style Comment from : Bárbara R |
Sorry but it is NOT worth for an exercise to spend paint that cost as much as a month of my rent That is simply dumb idea that can only come from an author that never faces financial problemsbrbrReally, here 1 Tube of Professional Oil paint cost 2/3 of my apartment rent Comment from : Tiago DAgostini |

if i wanna paint realistic wildlife, do i need to blend than for the fur? ore make diffrent vulues like a value scale? Comment from : NotAGameAddict |
Hi Chris I'm a watercolorist I'm finding those habits hard to break in that I'm mixing on the canvas as I do in wc You comment about transitions makes great sense I also have come to realize the transitions should be made on the palette first I do mix some on the wc palette, but 95 is done by the wc method I am very guilty of not using or setting out enough oil paint, but really squeeze out wc like I'm rich as it's put I do prefer the transition look vs blending Am I correct about palette mixing vs canvas? Thx Comment from : Paul Allen Taylor |
This is such a good video! Thank you! Comment from : Dead Sacred |
The difficulty is the value transitions may not be achieved by simply adding white but rather some other saturated and related lower value colour which you may have to mix Comment from : JamesHAL9000 |

The title got my attention, right away I was like this gotta be ur personal opinion brThank God u said it in the begining Comment from : Saint MeArl |

Hmm Paintings as reps Cool! Comment from : April Kurtz |
this advice is so specific for one style of painting I will always look the way he wants a paining to look i’m sure it’s awesome, but by doing the opposite of everything he describes you can get paintings that look actually photo realistic So it's all just how you want to paint Comment from : Mark |
To all the artist/ creative ppl in general approach the way you want to as there's no not to methods in such line of work as its all about making the best of how to make it work as there's different method to approach the same thing as everything comes to full circle one way/ another to an extent Take the best of everything & don't hang on to one things & if you really want to, you can come back to it later on as it'll give you a fresh view Comment from : Goldenblakcon |
ive actually been looking into pinterest art pieces, and my favorites are the one that look realistic without blending too much its the style i want to emulate myself thanks for the advice!!! Comment from : zeta lópez |
"especially", not "expecially" sorry, I couldn't resist Love your channel, you have great painting advice! Comment from : Joel Dickie |
My portraits always look better when I don't blend I'm always disappointed that I like my underpainting better I fall in the trap of trying to achieve realism close up but the painting still ends up cartoonish when its over blended I think I've just developed bad habits that are hard to break Comment from : J N |

G'day Chris im just starting out in the art of painting ive been a musician and worked with wood and steel in the part ive been thinking about picking up a brush for quite a while, and have finally purchased some paints and equipmentbrbri really understand your tutorials and thoroughly enjoy your teaching style bras an absolute novice, having not picked up an artists brush since probably primary school (elementary school in the US i think) i have gone with acrylic paints to start with, just to try painting out i think its because i only need water and dont have to buy other products that wont get used if my interest fades brwhat i want to ask you is, can all of your tutorial be applied to acrylic paint? Comment from : Andrew Brown |
Blending is a curse, i always blend Comment from : funnycat |
Thanks for your tutorial painting 🍎⚘🌹😊🖐🏻🖐⚘⚘ Comment from : Houshang Akhlaghipour |
I used to put a lot of paint on the palette but always ended up not using most of it, so now I use very little My latest painting looks nice but when it is sunlit from behind, I can see alla the strokes and it looks very poor and thin I also blend, A LOT, I don't want to see a single brush stroke, but that may be because I paint protraits so I want the skin to look smooth I want so bad to paint it over with a richer amount of paint but I 've painted all the details and shadows and highlights and it's time to give it out If I use a good amount of paint on my next painting, will it dry out evenly or will it stay moist inside? That's what I fear the most so I put 3-4 layers on top of each other and give each layer enough time to dry Comment from : Lilian |
I've been trying this method out, and it's great! Its so approachable and controlling I've shown this to my students, and they love it, too Comment from : Sam Easton |

Are we married now? Thanks for the suggestion! Excited to play with some oils!!!! Comment from : Justin Farmer |
With oils you have plenty of time to take a step or two, or even three back and look at your art once again Take a break, make yourself some coffee, look at something different for a little bit Disconnect yourself from your painting This helps to make your artwork the best you can, because you always look at it with fresh pair of eyes I don't think that blending is necessarily a bad thing, however i always loved paintings that looked like high resolution pixel art Comment from : Kokosę |

What nonsense On the large Sargent portraits the underpainting value shifts on flesh were slow and carefully resolved The man was a product of the Ecole des Beaux-Arts Virtuoso brushwork came only with the final pass Don't mistake his late career impressionistic (mostly landscape, and watercolor) works for his entire body Lastly, there isn't an Old Master from Giotto to Goya (as a general rule Old Master period ends 1800) that did not painstakingly blend value shift passages to achieve volume The indirect approach demands it Point is, don't offer yourself as a "coach" if you lack the willingness, or worse knowledge, to offer different approaches to same problem Comment from : h d |
