Lots of people have families in med school (because mothers are still protected by title 9) and many have families in residencies (there are some that provide maternity leave) A residency is training, but also a paid position Probably the only paid position a person who never made over 25k a year can enter and make 60k their first year Fellowships are also paid I started undergrad at 30 and I’ll start medical school at 33 (yes, 3 years undergrad only) I at least have the life experience enough to know what I like, what motivates me, and how to balance my life and a career in many ways already I’d say pushing the establishment towards a healthier medical field for practitioners is more important than steering future practitioners to what already exists Comment from : @carinamcallister4409 |

Anesthesiologist is the leader of the operating room There is no need to compete, but as an anesthesiologist you dont have to tolerate the surgeons bad mood, on the contrary if the surgeon is misbehaving is part of our job to order the surgeon or any other person of the staff to cool down Comment from : @diegoalfonsosalgarsarmient8254 |

I attended medical school and graduated with university Comment from : @kevinlau5940 |

Most dermatologist I've seen dont appear to be visit They do charge a lot So not sure the demand for dermatology is there and it's much worst for plastic surgery Both are considered hobbies none can afford and most shouldn not pursue, this is real lifeso this is one among many of the specialty many should NOT pursue So the 80 hours a week is not the best ideafor any specialty it should be about 20for all the reason you mention You retain less the most you invest and less competitive you will be and underpaid given the amount of hours you've invested You move fastest reading the book vs pretending each individual case will show up the same by hoping you get that many practices in the array within one given week It's rather missing the point entirely You will see more cases that target specific issues when compiled into a textbook, a scientific text A lot of medical books were printed on Laser Disc which is not the other tecnologies liek CD Rom etc Comment from : @dirk2655 |

While I agree with Dr Jubbal that many people change their mind about specialties in Med school, there are some specialties that will very likely not be a good fit based on my being a non-trad (early 30’s) as well as current and prior shadowing and healthcare experience The first doctor I shadowed was in the ER which wasn’t for me because of the pace and no continuity of care In contrast my current job as a scribe in a urology practice and former one as a receptionist at a psych clinic showed me how much I enjoy getting to know patients Going back to the point about my being in my early 30’s, it’s unlikely I would pursue a surgical specialty Age aside, informational interviews with ENTS made me realize surgery isn’t for me Comment from : @lauraeager373 |
I want to be a neurosurgeon :) Comment from : @rachealkatwire3893 |
I'm premed but I'm torn between Neurosurgery and Anesthesiology I love the aspect of of surgery and working with the nervous system, the pay is also great Although I don't know if I could handle the work/life balance Anesthesiology was what got me interested in medicine in the first place because it is still connected to surgery, has a greater variety in its work, still pays well, and has a much better work life balance But I guess only time will tell Comment from : @jarredcox6714 |

I ran a tutoring program for grade school children while in college I taught 6th grade before I started Med school I worked as a counselor at a children’s psychiatric hospital I was sure that I would be a pediatrician or child psychiatrist when I started Med school But my 3rd year clinical rotations convinced me otherwise This is a major advantage of medical school—you get to try on the specialty before you have to choose Comment from : @kennethmoore3783 |

can you do "so you want to be an oncologist" I and probably others are very interested in the field Comment from : @nicknormart5359 |
Are you guys going to address the changing landscape of medicine, especially post-COVID, with regards to mid-level encroachment? It's not a specialty-specific problem, it's rapidly evolving and not going away anytime soon and almost no one going into medicine is aware of this issue, and your platform would be the perfect opportunity to raise awarenessbrI'm fully aware of the fact that nurses have more power online due to sheer number so I get not wanting to go within a 100-mile radius of this topic but it's just so, so central to modern medicine and it can NOT be overlooked Please I know I would've wanted to know this if I was finishing my undergrad and weighing my options Thanks Comment from : @RonShenkar |

Dr Jubbal, brWhat are your thoughts of RN's crossing over and going to med school? Have you heard of/experienced much success? Do you think that an experienced RN would have any advantage over colleagues or even in admission to med school? Comment from : @RSQswmr2 |

reminder: It is totally ok to change your mind once or several times between the end of second year medical school and med school graduation Sometimes you never know how you like something until you actually put a hand in and try it for yourself Comment from : @gwillis01 |
hello friends Comment from : @gwillis01 |
i remember an old joke a friend from med school once told me, first year everybody wanted to do ortho or plastics, as soon as step 1 scores came back everyone now wants to do primary care Comment from : @billrussell4832 |
Maybe the problem isn't the age or specialty, it's the medical culture of looking down on residents that have children and not allowing for humane working conditions This is also the culture surrounding burnout Idk, this seems like a vid with rudimentary assumptions Comment from : @meez5753 |
