Vanilla linux be like a blurry cmd prompt Comment from : ForceofPhoenix |

Idle resource usage is such a ridiculous thing linux users have been obsessed with for way too long anyway Use all the resources i have Its not 1993, a modern OS can reallocate the resources when needed Look at the resource usage under load and you will see the lower resource usage "advantage" Linux has when idle completely vanishes Comment from : Mike Valadez |
0:14 Distro/DE? Comment from : Suraj Bhowal |
Heads up you can run Heaven Benchmark with Proton Just add the exe as a non steam game I wonder what the fps would be like on dx11 with the proton layer Comment from : CuЯb |
Of course ubuntu is still the default even after almost 20 years Comment from : Robin Daniel |

Thanks for excellent and fascinating video I use linux as my main os and only use windows if I have to But I have less problems with windows Additionally I have experienced performance issues with Linux such as slow scrolling on webpages that work perfectly on Windows Also videos seem to play better on windows I shall stick to linux but the slow scrolling issue is rather unfortunate as it really puts me off linux Comment from : BananaCyclist |
Very good video, thanks for it! And very interesting and kind of unexpected results on some tests :) Comment from : Ilia |

Tomb Raider runs better if you use the windows version on Linux, or at least it used to Comment from : Dragon Slayer Ornstein |

I'm switching to Linux Mint today due to Windows having to be constantly reinstalled after breaking after every few hours or days I don't know what's wrong, I thought it was my components, but no, it wasn't Comment from : Nerdy chess |
Windows batter life is lower because it's engaging the processor constantly to send all your data back to their servers 😂 Comment from : Dwayne Green |
I’m just glad I can stop supporting bill gates, that guy sucks Comment from : Liam Phone |
It would be awesome to see how those tests compare with same fan curves, Windows might drop down in certain aspects Comment from : Kuba Puchalski |
Why not test using an amd with intergrated graphics? HUM? Comment from : Claud Lowe |

When it comes to Linux distros, Ubunutu is the bloatest one, I think Linux mint would get better results Comment from : emre tasdemir |
Can we get the same test with Arch Linux? Comment from : Cyka_Delik |
complains about noise from a gaming laptop, ok we're done here nothing to see, this guy is an idiot, if you want silent you should have built a desktop lmao, i run garudaos on a 6900xt and nope cant even hear it you noob Comment from : Meat On Fire |
I took the plunge into PopOS as my gaming PC OS It was a bit of a struggle at first, but the improvement in the OS and Steam has been exponential in comparison to previous years Issues like the cursor not locking on to the primary monitor(out of 3), or Halo MCC settings crashing the game, are gone Comment from : break fast |
Fedora vs Ubuntu vs Arch based 🤔 Comment from : Dmytro Surin |
for a fair test u should run the fans on max - so windows and linux get the same thermal settings we all know todays PCs performe better if cooling is good Comment from : lightart87 |
For the game benchmarks, including a Max and Min fps would be informative The Min is important Comment from : Greg Burton |
I couldnt care less about fan noise, you should be running the fan at 100 max anyway so there is less thermal throttling and you know both systems are able to run at max performance, it tells me the Linux set up wasnt able to push out as much heat meaning it was throttling potentially vs the windows set up, it makes no sense to perform a benchmark this way Comment from : RoyBrown777 |
For the graphics tests: there is clearly driver related differences The difference in fan curves is the best proof to this Most of (practically all) these days CPUs and GPUs are thermally limited and controlled If your silicon is cooler, the clock speeds will be higher, ending in higher performance That 7 °C higher temperature on its own can resulted the lower gaming performance under linux, because your GPU ran at lower clock speeds Comment from : Egyenes Kifli |
2:30 , what ? wtf , of course its necessary , Comment from : Muhammad Bayu |
btw I use arch Comment from : Dont Read My Profile Picture |

Psh my linux doesn't run on ram it runs on bull sweat Comment from : darkshadowsaver |
Next time you feel the need to create a video don't You are very hard to follow; maybe write a blog post or something Comment from : ChatGPT Investing |
i just think the diference betwen both os is that on ubuntu is gpu throtling and on windows it isn't sience it's running max rpm, i think if gpu on ubuntu didn't throtled it would be the same or even a bit better performance Comment from : TheGerjo |
I like Linux better than windows because Windows is such a mess, Linux is open source, and I like to tinker Comment from : Silent Tech Films |
hi there just wanted to suggest adding side-by-side comparisons visually at the end of each section if you ever do something similar again either graphs or text would make it easier to digest after the commentary either way, thanks for doing this! i liked the video Comment from : Bobby P |
In all fairness Ubuntu comes already with a lot of programs pre installed like full office suite etc pp Comment from : Marcel Peters |
Hey man Your tests maybe it’s the wrong way To calculate and measure you need use the same API that work properly on Linux too, use games running with Vulcan api, most games had an mod or work natively If I’m not wrong this api it’s common used for Linux games “natively” And horizon zero dawn have a benchmark in advanced options graphics tab Comment from : Adriano Azael |
Ok this was really interesting I worked on the OpenGL driver for AMD for years and it just went through a massive revamp (for windows only, maybe? Actually I will look into that) in the last year I would like to see a Vulkan head to head perf test Talos Principle has a Vulkan and DX benchmark built in It previously had an OpenGL benchmark as well but that was discontinuedbrThe internet speed blows my mind It's the same hardware This shouldnt happen It would have to be a base linux driver issue, I think? This is super weird to me brOtherwise, these numbers were really cool to see and VERY surprising I do love that you went with windows 11 instead of 10 brMy main reason for starting the migration from windows is the new adware bloat they are forcing onto the OS Comment from : Slugger not |
My results may be unreliable because I am not that competent with linux but today I installed 2 different versions of linux and both of them ran youtube videos worse than windows 11 On the same computer and installed on similar spec SSDs The computer has 16Gb ram, a video card and an i3 processor Maybe I was doing something wrong? Comment from : BananaCyclist |
Windows has too much "telemetries" and spyware Comment from : JS77 |
windows uses much ram bcs it takes processess half open same as ios so when u open a new app it wont need 3 business days Comment from : user |
All i want is for Linux to just be more game ready Steam sure but lets say I have to get WINE involved i dont want that just install my game and im off doing whatever without much hassle Now I know developers are just going to program for whatever is the most out there, but it would be great to see the transition from windows to linux i want to, but i need to make sure it can play the games i want, install whatever gpu i want without any hoops besides just download driver and install etc Comment from : FakeName39 |
You forgot win10/11 are NOT OSs the last consumer OS microshaft released ws win7/81 win10 and beyond are services and very bad ones that are beyond horrible for being malware into itself and you all need to fight back against shit like the ms store as microshaft tries to lock onto their perpetual m$ is needed bullshit Comment from : Konnor J |
Thanks for the video! Comment from : Vladislav Karas |
Windows 11 on 8gb laptop is too little, literally can only open a few browser tabs and maybe discord and thats it I'm gonna look into installing Linux on my laptop 🙂 Comment from : Evilleader |

Linux is limited in HDMI 21 to 20 so I can't use 4k 120 hertz is this true?, question is there a way around this? Comment from : Rodrigo Alves |
Huge appreciation for Nick's objective presentation It's a very sobering perspective in this community I like the convenience of windows but i support Linux projects and want to see more distros thrive Comment from : Dan-The-Man |
4:40 I think, the problem of Ubuntu is the snap package: It retrieves the complete dependencies which uses much disk space Comment from : Go 2 Evolution |
I wish someone would do this with a lower end system, for example with a system running an older intel iGPU like a HD 530 Comment from : Commander |

Is 4K 120Hz possible on Linux like it is on Windows? Comment from : No_Name |
Great video Thank you Comment from : 13th Raven Purple |
I would guess that the fans running loud for Windows may mean that the processors (CPU, GPU, etc) were being more fully utilized, or the fan curves were affected, or other things were running in the background, or any combination of these things Maybe something I haven't thought of as well Comment from : World Theory |
More videos of this please! Comment from : Geoffrey Rene Moiens |
With Nobara you would have much better gaming performance Also using an AMD Radeon it seems that some users can achieve higher FPS on Nobara using Proton compared to run the same game on Windows 11 But it depends on the game and the resolution Comment from : SvenZHB |
I would love to use linux but there are two games I play and two games do not support linux Comment from : Burak CAN |
Hi, Nick! What distro or desktop environment is at 3:11 ? Thank you Comment from : Rubén Gutiérrez |
On the contrary, I've noticed that with linux i get less battery life than on windows Comment from : |
You should do another one on a computer with an AMD GPU, I am really interested in how it's going to compare, given that Nvidias Linux driver is quite bad And on some rolling release distro, since there've been some quite significant news recently, including the new GPL shader pipeline in Mesa or the new Skylake migitations, which Ubuntu LTS does not ship Comment from : tuxifan |
The stutter you've had is acually being solved, with the new GPL shader pipeline in Mesa That however is only available for Mesa drivers, like amdgpu, intel, noveau, but not for Nvidia Comment from : tuxifan |
doubt u will read this but u shouldve used pop os instead since its based on ubuntu but it has an option to force Dgpu on optimus laptops, high preformance option, and its more optimized for gaming and comes with nvidia drivers on a clean install would defo do better than windows Comment from : jett main |
basemark gpu would be better gpu bechmark cause it can run with vulkan on both operating systems Comment from : Deleted channel |
I find it odd that a native Linux Laptop is using an Intel CPU rather than AMD Isn't it well known that Linux performs better on AMD? Comment from : Video Games & Metal |
Now you need another video with AMD hardware Generally with Linux support we have Intel > AMD > Nvidia, so I'd expect worse battery life with an AMD CPU and a better gaming performance with an AMD GPU but that may be a misconception that needs to be cleared Comment from : Ark Laurant |
Sure Linux is lighter, using less recourses for the operating system thus leaving more resources for the user but it is simply not user friendly Making it very hard for people who are not advanced users to use it effectively But kudos on windows for keeping the gaming edge Comment from : UltraF |
Anyone know what's the distro in the 3:15? Thanks Comment from : Daniel González |
On the battery life segment I have noticed that between different laptops battery life under Linux can go in either direction Ubuntu I have found to have slightly better life than Fedora but Ubuntu was generally more sluggish on my ROG Strix 17 I think we are in that weird middle transition period for several hold outs Especially when it comes to gaming laptops which tend to hide a lot of features in there respective software suites Asus Linux has done some truly great work but not all features are in parity just yet The other big hold out even for me on the laptop side is the drivers for Nvidia they just aren't that stellar granted this has more to do with Nvidia and less to do with Linux Another pain point for wide spread adoption right now is Anti-Cheat even in some single player games making games difficult or in some cases unusable I fully heartedly believe the Steam Deck has to reach a broader market and become the default for Linux when developers consider flipping the switch and allowing all titles for Linux I think were still a year out and if Steam OS gets picked up by a bigger OEM like Dell/Alienware, Lenovo, Acer, or Asus that time would shorten greatly Thanks for coming to my ted talk Comment from : Andrew Byrd |
The problem is too many proprietary apps don't work on Linux because software devs don't use Qt Comment from : Ollicron |
I haven't reached the end yet, but when you compare upload and download speeds, you say that Windows is "better" for uploading when wired, but Linux is "way better" for wifi downloads I think you're showing some bias here, because really you should be describing them the other way around Wifi download was 50 better on Linux, but wired upload was 400 better If anything qualifies as "way better" it's the wired upload speed of Windows vs Linux Comment from : lostalien9 |
thank you for being objective! Comment from : Anonymous Commentator |

Real world performance, linux is faster Comment from : Matthew James Montgomery |

bUse dual boot 100 use of the brain/b Comment from : Dany Tops |
Thank you for doing these tests on default installs That’s a valuable point of reference for someone like me that’s looking to move my gaming system to LinuxbrIt’s just a matter of if I do it now, or in a couple of years at the end of Win10 support Comment from : Clay Suddreth |
You should really invest in some graphs I would be way easier to compare results in graphs than skipping back and forth in the video The python is really easy for that Comment from : swistak0220 |
03:10, what distro is that?? Comment from : Alok Singh |

My old laptop is running windows 11 with 6gb ram I prefer using windows Comment from : FluffyKittyOwO |

What's funny is that the thumbnail shows battery but 2:44 shows that battery isn't tested Comment from : tercmd |
I have also tested my PC with linux and Windows 10 In Snowrunner i can only play in medium quality with around 60 (i don't know for sure) and on linux with ultra graphic settigns with around 60 and if i try that on windows its really laggy Also i have tested Minecraft on my laptop in windows 10 i get around 30 fps and in ubuntu i get around 200 to 300 fps but i have only integrated graphicscard in my laptop Comment from : PlaneEight |
