on the gnome boxes thing: you could install virt-manager on the side as they both use qemu-kvm/libvirt which means you can create a vm in one and use it in the other i do remember boxes defaulting to a libvirt user session while virt-manager defaults to the system session but that's just a matter of setting up another connection 3 clicks and you're done also: nano rules i can use both vim and nano but nano just feels way better to me more modern as it uses hotkeys and stuff Comment from : kx4uy8dh9j |

For my audio and podcast recording I use oceanaudio and reaper (oceanaudio for the recording and reaper for the mixing) They are not FOSS, but I worked with those for more than a decade on a Mac (so I got my workflow dialed in) - and as I am making the slow transition, I am happy to be able to continue using them on Linux Comment from : André Loibl |
GIMP is great for simple edits! However if you need photo editing capacity I've found it lacking Thumbnails and entirely digital image creation seems to be perfectly simple on it though, so just consider what you need to do before choosing between PS and GIMP! Comment from : MortheMex |
Which software are you using to edit PDF on Linux? (eg assemble, annotate, digitally signing with self-signed certificate, etc) Comment from : Devin Currie |
13:25 Totally agree that we need sync feature for tab/label and filter rules so can sync between computers and mobile In fact the lack of label/filter rules in most email client made it hard for me to justify to move out of Gmail ecosystem If developers put in serious effort to solve these problem, I'd be happy to go back to using local email client software using IMAP I wonder if the lack of label/tag and email filter rules were due to IMAP? If that's the case, need to update IMAP protocol to support these features! Comment from : Devin Currie |
I would love a video dedicated to getting the most out of Thunderbird! I just installed and applied the GNOME theme you suggested and it is great! But I feel like I am only scratching the surface Comment from : David |

It's interesting to see how someone who has a "Windows" mindset sets up Linux I'm not a FOSS purist but sure am an Arch/Vim guy, but I respect your takes a lot even if our approach often differs Comment from : Dejan Gegic |

Did you have trouble installing that lg monitor? I have a lg ultrawide monitor too, and with linux it causes graphic artifacts at 90hz, while with windows i have no problem at all Comment from : Tommaso Riva |

Dude! The word Gnome is of European origin in the 1500s The "G" in the word is silent So it's not pronounced ga-nome It's pronounced just "nome" Why the word was invented with a "g" in it if it wasn't going to be pronounced? I don't have a clue, but the word was just "made up" out of the thin air! Just like the fictitious creature that was also made up, and given that made up title Get it!? So don't include the "g" when you say "nome" Thank You Comment from : CJ Perron |
I think you can talk about Resolve it's a serious bit of kit to have now on Linux and Black Magic are a seriously user focused company And it isn't just about open source but the Black Magic cameras and hardware You can say nice things about them without letting the side down Comment from : Yani Haigh |

Hey, what software would you recommend for remote desktop access? I have some VMs running on a server with linux desktop running on them that I need to let other people access and I am currently using dwservice but the experience is not so good, even tho I am on the highest paying tier for maximum bandwidth Is there anything you recommend for that? Comment from : JP |

For virtualization Virt-manager (QEMU/KVM) is the best on Linux Comment from : Aram |

Thanks Nick - interesting I prefer Vivaldi to FF because it has awesome memory usage and management - and I did not find that with either FF or Chrome, which is interesting because Vivaldi is also Chrome based I thought that you used OnlyOffice and ProtonMail, so I am wondering what happened to those apps maybe I missed something in your video? I currently use Mac,, but I am having a long hard think about that, because whilst I like it - the Apple ecosystem works well for me, and I also like the usability of MacOS, however, I don't like their price points, and the fact that they are completely anti right-to-repair in which I would include upgrades maybe the EU will add some weight to them being coerced to change, but my head is moving steadily in a Linux direction - it is usable, open-source, reliable, secure, doesn't spy on one, etc So a lot of things to like - thinking hard Oh, and BTW, there is one thing about OnlyOffice that I don't like, nor do I understand why - it does not like apostrophe-ed words, and always marks them as spelled incorrect - weird and ridiculous Enjoy your week and thanks for the video 👍🙂 (I also hate YouTube emoticons - they are horrible) Comment from : mwmentor |

You did forget to mention that there is a lot of open source software that stands as the basis of these applications, like the linux kernel, the gcc and clang compilers, mesa and all the libraries that these applications require I think these should have gotten a bit more attention in this video, since they are very important and often forgotten Comment from : Friso Smit |
All the propriatery software I use Comment from : Renato Zelenko |
You could at least try Sailfish OS and give it some visibility, with the official android app support it's the most functional linux phone Granted, it is a downgrade to Iphone and has some problems that have not been fixed (yet) like bluetooth and fingerprint not working in android apps Xperia 10 III is the best officially supported, and it is a very decent phone, not the best camera or high refresh rate screen, but the OS is very pleasant to use Comment from : Morgan La Fey |
9:45 you can also use ffmpeg for converting images btw! Comment from : Zig Zag |

GIMP is amazing, and my high-school computers teacher preferred it over Photoshop because it's made to be easy to learn rather than paying for classes to learn how to use the software And he would use it for commissions to upscale and touch up old photos, so it wasn't just his personal uses or anything Comment from : Declan Cottle |
Firefox is still incredibly slow on mobile Though if Mozilla can ever get it to catch up with their desktop app when it comes to speed I will definitely be switching over to it but for now I'm on Brave Comment from : Chris Anthony |

I also love Nano, but if you want something a bit more modern, and advanced, I really recommend Micro It still runs in the terminal like Nano, but it's way cooler Comment from : Pretend Colours |

Wait till you see open source advocate guy who LITERALLY self hosts and runs his life on open source He is the open source man brbrBut the one thing about next cloud is the eggs in basket issue Are you not putting all your trust into next cloud? I did give it a go and worked well, but the issue was having to manually update and I had no idea on how to switch from Linux server docker to the official docker container Thunderbird is infamous as well, and always recommend it over outlook Less bloated and more reliable than the Windows mail app Comment from : Goldmaster |

Hobby musician herebrbrI used Audacity until Muse acquired it and added some controversial telemetry I moved to Audacium after that which was one of the fork of Audacity (audacium still had the optional build flag with the Audacity Telemetry) I use Ardour now which is a bit more advanced with a multi-channel recording/mixing and supports plethora of lv2 plugins From the news, it seems that Audacium has been merged with Tenacity which is hosted over in codebergbrbrMaybe could do a video on floss audio software for recording and/or live streaming music/podcasts ;) Comment from : Joe Wakaki |
